DIY Gig organizers may not be aware of this

Lately we have a lot of DIY organisers coming up with gigs.
However, not many are aware that they need at least these 2 :

a) COMPASS permit (if copyright songs will be played)
b) Arts Entertainment Licence by MDA

Usually, gig venue operators would already have the COMPASS licence. However, organisers must also check with them to confirm this. If gig venue operators do not have COMPASS licence, then the organisers must apply for a permit (not necessary if ONLY original songs are played)

For Arts Entertainment Licence, gig organisers must apply for it. It can be done online and it cost only $10 per day. Responsible gig venue operators will inform organisers regarding this. This is done to avoid any disruptions or even seizures of the gig in case the authority pays a visit.

I was not aware about this untill recently. It's a learning process for everyone :)

Yeap. We know about the MDA permits thing. But compass is something new to us.

And another new is Police permission?

Yes COMPASS licence/permit is needed. I went down to COMPASS office personally and enquire abt this. Unless if it's an ALL ORIGINAL songs gig.

Police permit if needed if it's held at public place. If indoor like private gigs, only MDA licence is sufficient. Correct me if i'm wrong.

If i'm organizing an open-air event, free to public, what do I need to apply?

And I just read COMPASS site:

Events in Open-Air Venues (Outdoor)

Music Permit

EVENTS IN OPEN-AIR VENUES (Outdoor)

1. Background playback music
* $360 a day
2. Background music & audio-visual entertainment
* $525 a day
Note : Where only audio-visual entertainment is provided, the charge shall be $360 a day.
3. Staggered short duration performances of not more than 30 minutes each
* $360 a day for total performance duration not exceeding 3 hrs
* $120 for each additional hour or part thereof

Serious shit?

I dun think it's this expensive. U read the wrong one. If i'm not wrong it's $150 for ad hoc 'concert' or a certain percentage of earnings if tickets are sold.

But most gig indoor venues should already have this covered. They just need to pay a one time licence fee valid for 1 year. (cost $200+)

So my advice to DIY gig organisers, pls check with the venue operators if their premise has this licence covered.

Sometimes, some things, you gotta just zham.
The likelihood of getting caught is really really low unless you do it right under their noses.

Ya, chances are low.. but the chances are still there.
I ever encounter a rowdy crowd during a gig, then police came and started asking for licences. Of cos the organizer didnt have any and the gig was seized immediately and received a warning. (i'm talking abt the Arts Entertainment licence here which cost only $10).

isnt it safer to have these basics covered? And things will be smooth. Like i said, gig venues should already have the COMPASS licence. it's the $10 MDA licence that is wat organisers should look into.

A check with MDA shows that private gigs need to have the Arts Entertainment Licence

Description :

For carrying out any form of public entertainment concerning the arts, viz. plays, musical performances, dance performances, exhibitions, variety shows and pop/ rock concerts.

The Arts Entertainment Licence has to be collected from MDA before the start of the the performance or event.

FAQ :

Do I need to apply for this licence?

Unless exempted, you need to apply for an Arts Entertainment licence to conduct any form of arts entertainment, which includes plays, music and dance performances, art exhibitions, variety shows and pop/rock concerts at a place accessible to the public.

*laughs* this encourage DIY organizers to organise ALL-ORIGINAL gigs therefore bringing up the local scene rather than suffering from noob cover bands. this is how our local scene can MAJU!

Cover bands are okay at pubs and bars because i like to have a draft while listening to familiar tunes.

Good question. To my understanding, musicians with original songs should submit their work to COMPASS. This is to protect and to account for their original work. The question is, do these musicians/song writer get royalty every time others play their songs?

Wow, when was this Compass permit rule imposed?

How do we go by applying for this assuming the venue operators do not have a Compass license?
