Combined SOFT Jam No. 2

DeMoS,

Your take left me wanting more, because you showed your 'true colors' in very sparse ways and only toward the end. And you are certainly capable of showing a whole lot more...how about another take?

:)

DeMoS, its a cool take... using a clean tone... then mildly od-tised.

But a piece of advice before I continued - consider using a compressor AFTER the wah... reason being @ 0:30, there is clipping because the wah combined with your pick attack on clean was too loud. A compressor will even it out beautifully and you don't have to worry about busting eardrums or clipping.
Goose's (gsonique) Citrus (www.mrmisse.com) is a beautiful optical compressor that fits my bill to a T. Highly recommended.

Anyway... other than that... I see what you are trying to go about. Playing with space and just feeling it thru, aye? I don't think it works very well with this backing but definately with something more sparse, it would rock hard.

Some minor slip-ups along the way, its cool, all improvised and stuff...

I'm still the sucker for different note choices so... heck... play your pentatonics but try landing 1 fret behind your target note, then bend up to pitch. Its interesting-er IMO.

Sorry ah... I'm home and before I whip out my Java books, I got time to scrutinise with headphones. :D

Hay & Killinghall,
Thanks for sharing how you went about it...

I guess we all do it that way lah... listen then hit it.

I'm curious if anyone out there actually analyses the backing (e.g. chords, key, timing, etc etc) before hitting it?

bam, read ur post is like reading in real time leh.

Glad you decided to post... I'm downloading it now and I'm not waiting till it downloads finish to post this post. :P

you'll have to bear with my critique now... how, sian not?

bam...
Your tone sounds like you got some reverb/delay thing going on? It clouds your intro quite a bit plus you used the neck pup*? It makes it muddy sounding... though....
You might find this weird.
I like the delay/echo/reverb thing going on, its like slapback-ish... It adds flavour and I can imagine playing that intro riff with a tighter tone, it would work out better IMO.
Plus that slapback-ish thing makes it sound even less usual.

Is your lower string out of tune? When you play the intro, some spots sound off.

And DOOD... is that a diminished/harmonic-minor sweep in the chorus? :D

I like your takes in the "chorus" section. After the totally out there (pun not intended) sweeps... those little licks speak alot IMO.
1st sweep, then nominal blues lick
2nd sweep, then NICE. I like that, whatever it is, it moves me, I just perk up.
3rd sweep, then hahaha... I hear humor! Or maybe desperation? ;) Since ur take is titled WhackAHWhackAH. It is very cool, that pause was unexpected and the 2 notes after - I like.

How did you go about this take? You sound quite ... nervous? 1st take?

*3rd listen, while typing this, the intro sounds more like your bridge pup but the tone is loose.

hahaha that was desperation, but after that i decided to keep it cause it sounded well... cute.. :P

Was feeling pretty lazy after 2 takes, so i listened, and took the better one..

Intro was bridge pup.. And i used the plate ambience on my ax1500g..

Don't worry, i dont take critique as slamming, its the way to improve..

Like DeMoS said, thanks for the tips!

bam, congratulations.

You managed to convey a feeling, a vibe, an emotion that few have managed to do so. Really.

I'm serious! Don't laugh!

skink83, I gotta go do some work now... hehehe... I'll come back later.

The rest looking @ this thread can come post and comment and talk not?
