Classical music? what's wrong with it?

as long as ppl dont listen to them, i listen~ my motto haha!

I used to have that mentality.. Then I realise that it was dumb.. You shouldn't stop yourself from listening to something just because the guy next to you is..
Open up, and you'll be surprised at the number of impressive songs out there, even those played on the radio.. Most bands start out small.. If your favourite band suddenly became phenomenally popular, they are still your favourite band, despite the fans.. In fact you should be happy that they made that amoung of fans..
At the end of the day, if everyone strives to be different by listening to music people don't listen, you'll all end up listening to the same thing, and you won't be the different ones anymore..

How about a fusion? Apocalyptica attempts to take on metal using their cellos, and they have created a beautiful masterpiece, a blend between classical and metal..

I won't really consider Apocalyptica to be classical... they are simply playing rock music using classical instruments. Their music sound pretty different from classical music.

popular music stinks xD (my opinion) classical music is soothing and the cooler end of music, can say. But i also listen to metal and extreme ones, the OTHER end of music.. can say i am a musical "extremist" (if the term exist hahaha).. i jus don't listen to what's in the middle. just listen to what u like, don't care about what other people say =D.

i even listen to surf rock xD industrial metal.. as long as ppl dont listen to them, i listen~ my motto haha!

Now who's being aloof?

i beg to differ. maybe the more 'popular' songs from apocalyptica are deemed rock. but you should check out 'bittersweet' by them. it's really quite a piece of work..

hehe.... okay , this will raise a little bit flame...

most of my workmate are listening to..... disco/hip hop music... but actually I am quite enjoying because sometime there are some nice tone also and some creative electronic sound. but then again... I can't compete the "who gonna play music" today because all I get in my computer are metal and the classical stuffs...

Live with it, no need to change the perception of your workmates towards music that you like. They like what they like, you like what you like. If they like it great, if they don't too bad.

Workplace is like a common place and a common ground. Personal preference should be put aside.

Try them out on Edgar Varese's Arcana. That'll frighten cats and dogs and make small children cry. It's more heavy than cannibal corpse.

It is not the problem with music....It is people here in SIngapore are not so expose or do not really dig into music....but not those who comes to SOFT(that is why we are here in SOFT..hehe)

Not just classical, I ever play songs from Bread, The Beatles or even Simon and Garfunkel, people will just stare at me...wondering what is the problem with me...why am i listening to such stuff...they assume listening to music must always be TOP 40 or TOP 100 or whatever...Let alone classical...

I played Iron Maiden in my army bunk in those days...all my mates just say I am listening to junk....

Personally I like Baroque, but I also like pcs from romantic and classical period....my few favourite composer..Tchaikovsky, Shostakovich, Mozart, Beethoven, Bach, Vivaldi

I guess these people didnt know that their favourite music were actually evolved from classical music...

Nobody disses classical in my face around me, cus I'll diss popular music as simplistic noise. :D My Ipod is always around me, noise cancelling earphones to eliminate the trash thats playing everywhere else! (ok my opinion on what's trash is rather different from other people). The technicality argument works against anyone who's not a musician.

I generally don't listen to most of my non-mainstream music/stuff around other people, because I sure as hell wouldn't want to listen to their 'omg holy shit my favorite band is The shins or whatever bullshit band' which I most probably won't give a shit about when I'm around them. (unless ur a gurlz keke)

Music elitists/bandwagoners are equally, if not more annoying than the average music fan/ignorant. Everyone has different tastes, live with it, and die with it.

I can bet that some of them have their own piece of music that NOONE else would listen too.

I think they choose to listen to hiphop/pop because it is safe, updeat, and familiar to the mass. Something anyone can appreciate or at least tolerate. Not many people can appreciate metal, or classical, or techno or country music. But pop is more universal, so they chose the more "universal" music so that there will be the least amount of complain.

Then again, isn't Music itself universal?

One of the problems with classical music is the dynamic range. It doesn't translate too well in street usage.

+1.
I attended a neighbourhood school symphonic band performance last night at an auditorium and I'm not shy to say I was 'moved'!

Its way different if you're listening to it live than from a recording. Sometimes you'd need to open your mind (& ears) and you'd be pleasantly surprised.

Wasnt it Hendrix who said even if the band sucks, there are instances where you can hear something cool?
