Our Budget is around <$150.

I've Figured Perhaps those at CityMusic, The ZoomG1 or G2. Mega Distortion by Boss?

From a guy/guitarist point of view.Yes.Gain pedals are rather subjective. Ask better, else waste $.

But it wouldn't be a surprise anymore if asked as it might be rather obvious isn't it? Especially if it's for a girl leh.

I would want the person who accepts a gift to hopefully keep it and not sell it. So a gain pedal can be a problem.

I wouldn't mind not being surprised at something I want....

if she's a metal head no point giving her an overdrive..
if she plays blues, you can't give her a metal zone or anything..

Perhaps ask about her favourite guitar heros (SRV=TS9/overdrive, Kurt=DS1, etc :lol...or ask what kinda music she's playing now and what distortion she's using
