Help with Effects?!

Hey guys, I need some help here. Recently decided to get a drive pedal so I can have the option of switching from clean to dirty on my bedroom amp(Nux Mighty 15) as well as during gigs/jamming. However, I'm quite undecided on which type of drive pedal would suit my purpose more.
I play mostly rock to metal - Will a distortion pedal have enough range to cover these genres? I could probably use a distortion pedal as a boost with my Nux's gain channel if I wanted to reach for more distortion.
The main dilema I'm having here is that I'm afraid getting a super distortion/metalzone pedal will be much too dirty to do pop rock stuff, and on the other hand, my Nux's natural gain is quite weak - will a distortion pedal alone be enough to help it reach metalzone? Lol pardon the pun :p

Another thing is, I'm thinking of getting a delay pedal, as I like to use a slight digital delay in my solos to help it sound more "epic". I've thought about it and decided that I only need these two effects for now. Would it be more ECONOMICAL to get a multi-effects or just these two babies? In my 3 days experience with my friend's Zoom G2.1U, I didn't like that you had to use the multi-effect's amp models if you wanted to use it's effects. I want something you can turn on/off ala stompboxes as needed - literally effects only.

And though I like the option of having more effects at my hands, I kind of don't want to buy let's say, a Zoom G2Nu, and end up using maybe only 1/2 of the effects when I have to pay for stuff like pitch shifter/harmonist/a. wah that I don't use much. :(
I like the very simple, idiot proof user interface of the unit, but I cannot justify to myself to get it when I know I'll only use 1/2 of what I'm paying for.

Edit: Left out that I have a budget of about 200 if for those two effects alone(Distortion/Delay)!

Sorry for the long, long post guys!!!I know I'm a very difficult person to please, arghhh! :D

For 200 its hard to get a distortion and delay that good. Multi fx might be the solution, you are paying for more but a zoom is much cheaper than what I'd recommend haha.
Btw, I would recommend a Maxz high gain monster ( 2 channel so you can switch from low gain to high) and a cheap digital delay like a boss or echopark. Should add up to 300 if you get them 2nd hand. Off the top of my head I can't think of pedals within your budget that can switch from OD to dist apart from the os-2 or sd-2.

Haha you know what, in 15mins after posting this thread, I convinced myself to get a Zoom G1N.

Seems to have everything I need, and a little bit more. I cross-checked the specifications between the Zoom G1N and the Zoom G2.1Nu(http://citymusic.com.sg/webshaper/store/viewProd.asp?pkProductItem=496 -Zoom's latest offering in their G series) and found they are mostly the same, so quality difference shouldn't be too much. I'll head down to CM one day and try both side by side to further compared, but I think it's $80 well-spent for all I need, as far as I know. What do you think? :D

Edit:Btw what I meant by specs mostly the same is,I was looking at sampling rates, signal processing, etc. I don't mind losing out the extra 20+ patches, and 60+ patch memory, because I believe the G1N has all the most basic effects I wanted, and 40 memory banks is more than enough for me - I'm a very, very simple guy when it comes to effects! :)

Honestly? Top up another 50 bucks, get the Vox Tonelab ST, solid like balls ahhhhh and it sounds good... better compared to the Zoom lah that is. Might aswell get something that can last you instead of buying the 80 bucks zoom and find out after a week that this isn't good enough cause now you're 1337 with pedals. You get what you pay for lah, and the 255 is REALLY worth it, and you'll like an expression pedal, cause you'll venture into the "wah" territory hehe so fun

Haha, tried the wah on my friend's Zoom before leh...didn't really feel like I needed the Wah,after playing for the past 2 years. :X Probably cause I don't noe how to use lol. Btw,lemonade, you mean top up 50 bucks from 80 can get the Tonelab ST??? I was really enthusiastic about the G1N since it's cheap and good enough for me...that's the main thing. I could probably continue playing without any effects, but since it's like a side dish, I don't want spend so much also, you know what I mean :D

i use to have the very very old zoom 505II multi efx pedal. I'd say its good for home practice use. Alot of efx to choose and play around with. Now all change to zoom g2 already not very sure are there much changes anot.

But for home use. I'd say G2 is good enuff for you. I tried my 505II on jamming studio and it sounded damn noisy.

My 2 cents

cool, thanks for the feedback fluid. I see you have a7x in your profile pic, I assume you play metal :)
Was the 505II enough for you back then? Trying to get a gauge of Zoom's quality from here!

You don't buy a low-end Zoom for quality, you buy it for budget's sake and convenience of having a small multi-effects.

I would have hunted for a cheap Boss DD-3 and two or more Danelectro Cool Cat Drives/Distortions for under $200.

The multi-effects route would be a good idea, since you'll be playing quite a range of stuff. I play a wide range of styles so I just cannot use pedals. I'm using a Line 6 Floor POD, though. Which is pricey but aye it does sound great.

I also feel that while the drive tones on multi-effects do sound a bit more digital, they sound fuller and more amp-like than the pedals I've tried so far.

i would go with carboxymoron's advice. hunt 2nd hand pedals on soft. a boss dd and danelectro's coolcats

if you want to go the multi effects route, best if you started out with the top of the entry level units like the poh hd's or the m9/m13. if they're out of your budget, then don't go multi effects route till you've saved up enough! =)

What about the Boss ME-25 guys? Seems to have alot of features I'd use - USB A/I,38secs Looper,Drum Machine,Sonar Cakewalk LE bundled, etc. And it's BOSS,we're talking about :) At $300 compared to a HD 300 going at $450+ at City Music...Not sure if they still make the Floor Pod with the new HD series?? Intending to get a ME-25 during sales period if possible, though.

the ibanez DE-7 is the sex. it was my first delay pedal back when i was on a really tight budget and it was widely recommended. if you just want the sound, without the tap tempo function, then definitely go for it! =D

Ah yes, forgot the DE7. I'd bet on a good day you could get a DE7 and 2 Cool Cats for $100

Wa, the DE 7 is that cheap? Cos' 2 Cool Cats, already nearly 70???..Must be a darn good day lol!

Anyways, does the Echo function on the DE7 derive from the delay effect? Cos if not, call me stingy, but I don't wanna be paying for an effect I don't use :(

Oh nearly forgot, speaking of Ibanez, anyone has the Ibanez Smashbox? Damn, I see the demo on YouTube, sounds like it covers a wide range of distortion, and it's $90 at SV Guitars :D

Edit: Sorry ah,just wanna be clear, is this guy using delay? Cos I was talking about adding delay into those melodic solos like that, not sure if I got it right, but I just LOVE playing solos like that.
