anyway it's alright to think that singaporeans have a poor command of the english language. but you don't tell that to a reporter. it's just....wrong. like it'd be alright if kanye thought that taylor swift didn't deserve the award. hell, if he twittered it or something, probably no one would have cared. but he went on stage and said it in front of many MANY people, which makes it NOT alright.
 
^ Seriously? Do you really think Beyonce, at her first concert here ever which attracted 10,000 people and was the centre of a lot of hype, would need to say something offensive like that to get more attention? I think not.
 
The weirdest issue about this thread is that while there are many defending Beyonce, there are also an equal amount dissing Riz Low. I mean come on now, Riz Low may not have the most perfect command of english but at least she dosent do hurtful comments like Miss "Diva".

I personally would take the first step and defend a local instead of supporting someone who is making unfair comments about our country. I mean, as some Softies have mentioned, Singaporeans command of english isnt perfect so its high time we give Ms Low a break and at least give her a chance to improve. As for Beyonce, all i can say is, for god's sake, you dont have a single right to criticize us.
 
Just saw the interview she gave out for the F1 Rock Concert at StarSport. From what i hear, she definitely got misquoted.

She said something along the lines of "Whenever im in Asia, I always try to give energetic performances because the crowd is so energetic and ill always try to give it back. For example, a fan that doesn't speak good English but knows every lyrics to a song."

Nothing in reference to Singaporean in general. Not a fan of her, but definitely in my opinion got misquoted. She might be a diva but im sure she's smart. =)

Note the post above which pretty much vindicates Beyonce.

As for Ris, this has probably been said many times in SOFT already. When our country is represented, we want to be represented in a manner we can be proud of. If Ris Low was an ordinary Singaporean, sure, she can have all the time in the world to boomz her English or repent for her credit fraud. However, (the former) Miss Singapore World is no ordinary Singaporean and her presentation, as judged by the infamous video, is damning of what a Singaporean is seen like by the outside world.

That Beyonce cannot be talking about Singaporeans lah I think, from the quality of Engrish I see all over this thread.

in my opinion, it is mostly because of the fact that the american accent plays a dominant role in the global media, hence people around the world would actually think that we are not speaking good english, but in fact it's just the accent..
 
Aiyah, not all Singaporeans have bad command of the English language.

But then again, there are also many who have just barely grasped the gist of English...

Depends lah, on the individual.

Well, think about it... When you speak in conversation, do you use the word "hence"? I cannot, for the life of me, think of the last time I used the word "hence" when speaking...;)

a few of my aussie bosses speak singlish too. and they are cool with it.

wateva it is,i dun reli bother la... to the americanos, to the british to the whoeva,their slang and pronounciation are the correct way. so let it be lor...

i bet that 95% of us sporeans will speak singlish in 65% of our life daily.

i is ok with it and i still think maria ozawa is damn hot.
but who is she ah? is she a singer? footballer?
 
Actually, ...

The Lady Beyonce has done Singapore a favour. This industry thrives on unusual negativities. Look at the suspiciously staged Kane West interruption on what's her name? Now her album sales are doing better than expected, Kane West gets to be the bad boy that he is, Beyonce gets to look good in front of the world by being the gracious 'big' sister.

A lot of us now know who Ris Low is, there's even a full page article on this 23 year old that I had otherwise, no impression or idea of.

There's a whole lot of such 'nonsense' going on, from the past and it seems to work favourably for those involve more often than not.
