Well, there seem to be two camps in this issue.

One which turn up their noses at everything Western, dismissing it as unnecessary, and conveniently labeling those who speak good English with proper enunciation, pronunciation and grammar as 'pretentious wannabes who are trying to speak with an accent'.

And the other who are basically wondering what's the exact extent of the ignorance and delusion in that first camp, and whether Singapore can really be called a first world country with citizens like them.

I find that comment quite hypocritical coming from a black artist who uses words like Bling, Booty, yall and thang and what not.

Hell if Singapore was a continent and a super power, everyone else on earth would go like "Wah lau eh, what talking you siah Beyonce!"

Very true, which is also why even if a Non-Singaporean points it out, there would be no absolute change because people aren't going to listen.

Which is why it irks me sometimes that 70% plus of the population is Chinese. It gives us the illusion that we can go along speaking it and still survive speaking Mandarin alone, thus the lack of urgency in speaking proper English.

At least, if you try, we'll forgive you. But many just don't bother at all

Beyonce's right. Being a non chinese who's lived in singapore since I was 6 months old, it gets stunningly irritating to hear people speak english wrongly when they go on thinking that they're speaking it correctly. It just shows how much they didn't pay attention in primary school.

It's like we want to be a nation who is well known for being anglicised, but we damn well can't pay attention in primary school and learn the basics. If you follow the Singapore education system from day one there should be no reason you pick up Singlish unless you had a shitty English teacher.

Of course I'm not referring to people who can switch between Singlish and English at will, like myself, and the majority of people here.
 
WTH?? We may not speak english as fluently as them, but through written form, i genuinely believe Singaporeans can give them a good run for their money.

P.S. Beyonce is overrated :)

its like we make ourselves look like china..

we have mandarin speaking performances during f1..
if i were her, i would think spore would be the same as china, just richer..

oh yeah,some of our shopping centres have names written in mandarin(the clementi one)..
so much for a multi racial country..
