BAYBEATS 06 is back!

...

As I Lay Dying at Baybeats???

Metal - yes. Metal at Baybeats - no.

There is something definitive about the Baybeats sound - if you've been to the past ones, you'll know what I'm talking about. It's comprehensive enough to cover a wide spectrum of genres but not indiscriminate so that it includes everything. Some genres of music sadly just don't fit in. Before some of you get your knickers in a tiwst, this doesn't mean they're inferior genres or whatever, they just don't fit.

Certain bands on the bill don't quite do it for it while others would get my 100% cotton pants wet in an instant. But generally, the lineup looks bloody sexy, I reckon.

do not wanna argue with you. if you do believe its all about respect, id refer to ur first reply to my mentioning about diplomats roaming esplanade.

and im working with wakemeup music. and im pretty much aware about whats going on behind the scenes. so id prefer if everyone could just stop complaining and watch.every single year people complain about the same thing.

Another thing just came to mind, Baybeats is an indie and alternative festival. how come everyone is wanting metal bands to come down?

Dont worry dude.. we're not at the brink of an argument.. Just sharing of thoughts and ideas... But somehow, the things you wrote, just wanna make me wanna have a pick on it.. Respect and Tolerance..

First of all.. kudos and respect to those at Wakemeup Music.. who has worked with Esplanade to make this festival an anticipated event every year. That probably goes out to you too.. Mr Knightlaughalot.. the man behind the scene :D Nice disclaimer..

Can someone enlighten me with the definition of Alternative pls.. does it mean.. that a band has to sound like stone roses to be in the spectrum of alternative? hmmm... Or issit sumthing to do with not conforming to a certain sumthing.. sumthing along tat line.. pls correct me if im wrong, pls. ('')

I like the point ... fictionaire_gse.. mentioned, "its comprehensive enough to cover a wide spectrum of genres but not indiscriminate so that it includes everything".. And he added his own personal points by saying 'some genres of music sadly dont fit in'..

So who's to say.. what fits or not? Did organizers based it on popular demands or bands that has lived up to a certain level or by own personal selection? I would like to say that I've enjoyed the bands that have been chosen for the event throughout the years.. but maybe just for general knowledge.. can the organizers share the process on how bands get selected to play in baybeats?

A lot of genre can be considered alternative.
However, every year baybeats is the same.
Same band, same sound.

I appreciate that it's actually free, but for a local event, there does not seem to have a lot of local bands involved. If it's for tourism, who da hell would want to fly down to SG just for baybeats?

The selection is always the same. It's either you got connections with WMUM or the organisers, or you are the more popular local band, which in way, has connections with them.

There are a lot of good bands locally, yet sadly, they do not get a slot to play at baybeats.

I happen to eavesdrop on a conversation at baybeats '04 between a WMUM personnel (no names sorry) and some guy who performed on that night. Still remember the priceless comment. (Not in exact quote)

"We want to bring in more overseas band so that at least got some standard."

Great.

Think we can adopt like some other music fest in Taiwan, Hk and Thailand,
Different stage or day for a different genre.
Unless it is a specific theme fest..i.e. like Alternative music fest or Punk music fest..then case close..

Since it is to promote independent music, therefore every major genre should be given a slot to showcase the best independent artists/bands of their own genre. And organiser should work with other local labels to promote the fest. This way, it will be really promoting local /indies music scene, also give local label and their artists a chance for exposure to wider audience n media.

.alamak.

.dont bother lah.

.metal,indie,alternative.

.wateva lah.

.as long as there's no b-boys or some shittay Hip Hop acts during the event .

.if any of such things do appear, i suggest we slay all those hip hop posers who happen to be arnd the area.

.....

I checked out the line-up for this year's Baybeats and although I am disappointed that certain bands like My Squared Circle, I Am David Sparkle, Sevencollared T-Shirt and B-Quartet aren't on the line-up, I still have to say kudos to the organising committee and to Wake Me Up.

You still have great bands like Love Me Butch, Great Spy Experiment, Concave Scream and the legendary Tiramisu playing. What really caught my eye was the return on Plainsunset! That is going to be dead awesome man! We've waited 2 long years for this.

As for bringing metal into the Baybeats picture, well I know what you mean. You want to bring in more of the melodic metal bands and stuff. While I am not gonna slam your idea and say it's ridiculous, the context of the event has to be taken into consideration. So yea, metal just don't fit the bill. As for hardcore, well, like i said. The context and concept of the event have to be atken into consideration and yes you might start with saying alternative music should not be restricted to certain genres but Baybeats has its reputation. It has its own definitive sound that brings the crowds in every year. So yea, that's all i gotta say for now.

PEACE OUT! A-TOWN!
