BAYBEATS 06 is back!

What the hell does 'mellow' mean??

From the previous posts, it could mean any of the following:

good
boring
talented
sexy
depressing
chocolate
singaporean
flexible

Anyway, I think the following should be made the quote of this topic:

One man's meat is another man's poison. Or dead cow.

Obviously not all bands are gonna be there. And if your favourite band isn't there, then too bad. There's probably a good reason for it, such as, they didn't want it badly enough to be bothered to send their demos in. It is physically not possible to have everyone's favourite bands to play.

But there's no need to put down other bands in other to see your favourite get on stage. That's just not nice.

by the way guys, this coming up:

FYI for those who want to see some bands who MIA at Baybeats on a big stage

:)

FLOW @ Ministry of Sound, feat. Divine 9 ‘Live’ (Australia)

Australian Industrial outfit Divine 9 are set to hit Singapore shores once more with the upcoming event FLOW in Ministry of Sound come 5th September, Tuesday. Organized by youth collectives Indulge, Playprojekts and hiphop specialists The Illers, Flow boasts a high profile lineup utilizing all the rooms in the entire Ministry of sound complex. Confirmed acts include: Divine9, local scene heavyweights Ronin (universal), Great Spy Experiment, Tien, Yamaha Asian Beat 2005 finalists Project Ultrasound and Strentorian. DJ Jason Chow of WKRZ 91.3fm is set to host the event and spin together with Drum and bass maestro Vortex (exitmusik) among the announced deck surgeons in the works. Rumours abound that Chart toppers Electrico as well as Saw Loser (a.k.a Pug Jelly) are also set to play for this massive hip-hop vs Live endeavour.

Given the rise of large scale youth orientated shows, including the recent Baybeats and Youth Gone Wild, both presented by Motorola, the expectations for Flow are high indeed with the main sponsor yet to be unveiled. The age policy for Flow is set at 16+ for the main floor of Ministry of sound and 18+ with alcohol served on the upper storey. Although security is necessarily expected to be tight, many industry figures are excited about the prospect: said Calvin Sio, 31, Marketing Manager, Ministry of Sound Singapore, “We hope to reach out to the youths with an event such as this one and I think this event will be a great platform to showcase the Ministry of Sound to our future clubbers”

The surprise announcement of this show was given by event spokesperson, Winson Lau, 18, vice-chairman of the Flow committee “This event is a youth for youth initiative in which we have engaged talents from the scene in order to prove that such a large-scale youth driven event is on par with corporate music festivals in Singapore.”

What can I say? Go with the Flow.

i think its really funny when all these people come up and go 'how come ronin didnt play!'. hear people, baybeats is 'the alternative and indie music festival of the year'.

anyway, i really enjoyed myself on all 3 days, catching as many bands as i could. i met quite a lot of the bands and they were all really nice people. especially derek hess, he drew me one of his fine art pieces! (im going to frame it up soon lol)

the better bands for me were: (in chrono order) Nothing To Declare, Love Me Butch, A Vacant Affair, PLAINSUNSET, Angelas Dish, ETC, Calerway, Electrico, Beezewax and The Posies.

statement of the year by Angelas Dish: "We played at the chillout stage, and everyone was pretty chilled out."

hi there,

i know i might get flamed to death and back a few times for even saying this ... but from a purely constructive point of view and without trying to sound overly critical - does anyone else feel a lil disappointed with the new "direction" taken by Electrico in terms of their music?

there is no faulting their performance. they are an amazing live act. prob the best (if not one of the best) at the present moment. superb energy, charisma and showmanship.

i'm just a lil surprised that they seem to have changed from an indie band into a rock n roll band. imagine if Coldplay suddenly decided to sound like Jet on their next album. all the songs they performed at baybeats had a very strong rock n roll vibe - the riffs, the singing. gone were the indie musings of "i want you" or "runaway". i'm not saying it is bad. but guess i'm just a lil disappointed they have changed their sound so much.

any thoughts?

Re: ...

to summarisation the bro pathein

sometimes we ought to harken back to the days where the ancient aztec roses, inca silvers and olmec heads smoked chocolates. so stoked were they that they have they decided that chocalate should also include milk for enjoyments of the masses and as well as you too. for chocalate description, psychedelic vomit must be induced for the bay to beat, for the matthew to sweet and for lips to flame tokyo incidents.

Errr.. Didn't think anyone would take it literally but at least one person has so here goes..

The term 'mellow' has surfaced a few times in this discussion and I for one feel like the different people who have used it actually mean different things. So 'Mellow' could mean just about anything. Including chocolate, which is not an adjective explicitly but with all the creative use of language nowadays, who cares?

For e.g. The bands were too mellow means as much as the bands were too old, too cow, too serpent-fire-of-mystique, too James-Jim-Johnson, too chocolate, etc.

So people.. What on earth is 'mellow'? Pls enlighten!

Am I being mellow if I wallow?

you are totally right that band's do change. i wouldn't necessarily put a band down just because their new album sounded like their old one. i think there is a fine line between developing and keeping within a "sound" and sounding stagnant.

lots of bands have changed their sound as they moved along and done so succesfully. no doubt the changes may have alienated some of their fans but they made new fans as well. for example blur (compare The Great Escape to Think Tank), primal scream (compare Screamadelica to Evil Heat), idlewild, manic street preachers, radiohead, U2 and the list goes on.

but there are also bands who have kept largely to their sound through the years without sounding stagnant. bands like the cure, afghan whigs, pearl jam, smashing pumpkins and within the local context the best example would probably be concave scream.

and of course there have been bands who have made changes to their sound which have proven to be career ending.

anyway i was just sharing my thoughts and wondering if anyone else felt the same way. wasn't meant to come across as a criticism in any way. thanks for the replies.

i meant mellow as in slow / soft / gentle / relaxed / mild / timid / unnagressive / unassertive / passive ......etc

(music for chilling out to, not rocking out to)

anyways, u cant say a word can mean different things to different people unless the word itself has several meanings....seriously...

i love eating mellow-coated strawberries????

charlie and the mellow factory?????
