Amp recommendations.

Yep that was the Brat, not sure if it's pre/post Gibson. What I do know is my friend has the same model, in a nice green color (looks somewhat tolexed in my mind) and mine is a plain black color.

8" speaker + little headroom are my complaints - but then, it was never geared to sound like a clean sounding amp (though I must say the clean channel sounded awesome).

Agree they are good amps for practice.

The black one is the one that I love. The green one somehow sounded a bit different. Also my green one doesn't have a reverb. I might try opening up my black one one day to see if I can fix it. I'm thinking it's an opamp problem.

You mean the shop and not the Classfieds right?

Ok dudes.
I've narrowed my search down to 3 amps, namely the

Cube 30
Kustom 30RC

As mentioned previously, the effects do not really matter as I am using pedals mostly. But then obviously I want it to have a sweet sound too. The Cube has heavy emphasis on effects. But I am worried about the quality of the sound of the Kustom.
I play mostly rock and metal. And when you guys say that the Kustom cannot do metal, you mean the amp alone cannot do metal?
But it shouldnt be problem through pedals yes?

Suggestions?

honestly... take the cube...

ive really had bad experience with KUSTOM amps... mine was a KGA30 i think..
the stupid chorus and reverb wouldnt turn off... pissed me off so bad...

CUBE 30!

Even if you don't use the built in effects.

At least the cube 30 in comparison to a the kustom.

You would think that the new olds would be improved. Hmm.
Can't you bring it back to the shop? I mean, the damn thing's faulty right?

one thing I noticed about the cube30... the 3 band EQ is not very... ah... well, the EQ seems to affect a very narrow range of frequencies.

When I upped the mids, I don't hear much of a thickening effect, as when a range of mid freq is raised, but more of like raising a slider on the Boss GE7, you just get more awwww out of your tone. I could NOT stand it! The EQ was just... ugh....

For that matter... the cleans of the cube30... its just thin and uber clean. Thats it.

Anyone else have anythign to say on this?

Yep. I tried the Cube 60. At that point, strangely enough I was looking for an amp with a pristine clean channel - the Cube perfectly fit the bill. :)

I can't really compare the two amps since I listened to them with two different guitars connected. The Kustom RC30 had a nice warm tone, with no pedals connected and responded quite nicely when I tweaked the EQ. Definitely not geared for metal unless you use a pedal before it . Sounded perfect for blues/classic rock though. A couple of things that are neat about the Kustom - fx loop, celestion speakers.

As far as reliability goes - really for a solid state 30w amp, you are looking more at construction quality than anything else - the cube looks sturdier if that is the primary concern.

I guess, you can call the Cube30's cleans sterile? Its an emulation of the mighty JC120, but only a digital emulation...

Phil, you have to hear the cube30 then make a decision.

Well, here's a little report.
I went to test out both the Cube 30 and the Kustom, and ended up purchasing the Kustom 30 Dual RC.

It just sounds wonderful, the cleans are indeed warm and dynamic, as mentioned, and it just works well with my efxs. It's simply appealing.
And the reverbs and chorus can be switched off, completely.

Anyway, do you guys make it a point to lift the amp off the ground? I always prefer to elevate the amp.

.... but the od channel is nothing to write about. mines really fuzzy and i hardly use it....

Man! :) Try using the gain... a little less.. like 2 oclock gain, on the brit setting... set the eq to something like bass 12 oclock, mids 1, treble 1. Its very very sweet. :)

The od channel refers to the 'lead' channel is it?

well, i have no idea what it is called. Got OD/Dist one lah... hehe.. only have 2 channels so it shouldnot be too hard to figure! :D
