alcohol

What matters is the absolute amount of alcohol drunk, not the strength.

1 can tiger @ 5% = 16.5ml of alcohol
10 cans Jolly @ 0.5% = 16.5ml of alcohol

Of course, this is theoretical. Nobody would drink 10- cans of Jolly because you'd be sick from the liquid volume before the alcoholic effect became worthwhile. I don't drink it to get high (I choose beer or something stronger for that). I drink it because it is very refreshing.

Nope, really it doesn't. Drinks with different alcohol proofs have different effects on the body, because the rate of absorption into the bloodstream factors in with time and volume consumption. Take into account roughly 10% of alchohol is expelled through breath and urine, 10 cans of jolly shandy will never have the effect of a single can of Tiger. It's less noticeable with higher proof liquors of course.

Cheers stopped selling Jolly Shandy to underage beings about a month ago though.

The matter how much you argue that it's officially considered a non-alcoholic drink, the counter staff will not bother to accept any explanation.

7/11 is fine with me buying it but they've only got the Lemon flavour while Cheers stocks up on all 3 flavours.

Anybody in on writing in to Cheers about the less than 0.5% alcoholic content part?

thats wat! better go ahead and drink a can of tiger rather than drink a so called 'non-alcoholic' drink. it contains 0.5 alcohol. i saw this drink debut back in 1995! how long was that. if its a fruit drink just leave all natural right. why would they add a 0.5 alcohol in it. its better not to put at all right.

Don't drink too much alcohol.

Look what alcohol did to this dog. He even had enough will to live to turn from looking like an unwrapped mummy dog back to a normal, healthy-looking dog, just to get to drink again.

Jokes aside, it's truly a miracle that even animals have got strong will.

Yeah ok - for this dilution of alcohol then you're probably right.

A shandy is a combination of (usually) lemonade and some kind of beer. It is not a case of them taking a fruit drink and adding alcohol - the beer is what gives the shandy it's 'edge'.

For the interested, in the UK (where I grew up) a shandy is usually half and half alcohol to lemonade. One usually goes to the bar and asks for either a 'bitter shandy' or a 'lager shandy' the former being something like a typical 'English beer' (bitter) such as Ruddles, Boddingtons, Tetley or whatever that pub has on tap. The 'Lager' version is the same but containing what is known in Singapore as 'beer', i.e. something like Stella, Fosters or Tiger (though this is seldom if ever used in in a shandy in the UK because it is never on tap - usually served in bottles).

Consequently, a shandy you get in a pub is much stronger than a Jolly. Shandy is commonly a summer drink, i.e. I suppose orders of it spike during the summer months of June - Sept because it is more refreshing and cooling. Since the addition of beer takes the edge off the bitterness of the beer, shandy is very easy to drink and thus also overdrink - you can get quite drunk very quickly on it without realizing.

Further, shandy is more common in the South of England (London and Home Counties) and people from the North often refer to Southerners as 'Shandy Drinking Southern Poofters' as a friendly(ish) derogatory term.

A variant of the Shandy is the 'Lager Top' or 'Bitter Top' wherbey one gets 80% of a pint of lager or bitter, topped off with a dash of lemonade to take the edge of it. Again, a dangerous thing since the ease of drinking it due to the soft drink content combined with a near pint of full beer means you will get hammered super quick! Great! :)

god, so the jolly shandy here is just a weak imitation of its cousin in the UK?

Well as long as there alcohol content in the drink, be it small or huge its still considered alcoholic.

Even if it takes over dozens of cans and lotsa piss to get you drunk.

So before eating/drinking smth its better to look at the contents/ingredients(in regards to those whom are rather conscious of what they put in their body). If u wanna drink just drink if not just leave on the shelf for others to consume.

peace~

I used to get hives from drinking. Apparently, the cure to the allergy... Is to drink even more.

Many Chinese get what is called a 'flush' (red face and neck) from drinking alcohol. This is caused by a lack or deficit of an enzyme called aldehyde dehydrogenase which breaks down by-products of alcoholic consumption.

I don't think it is an allergy but then, I'm not a doctor (just a guy who knows some useless crap). Drinking more will definitely NOT help.

jolly shandy...IMHO, tastes so awful!

And the most hilarious memory of Jolly Shady was that one day afterschool in my sec life, i went to the mama shop beside my school for some chips. There were some junior boys trying to impress me, and ordered like 6 packs of Jolly Shandy.

They were like,

"Auntie, we yao 6 can jolly shandy..."
and gave me that playa look.

auntie gave them a >.> look.

Auntie anyway said that they were underaged.

I flush very fast too. But can hold for sometime...
