Why are Singapore Movies/ Music not so popular as Hong Kong.

Hmm.

So far I've only heard electrico and Hady Hirza on the radio (within the last month or so), and it's always the same song for either group / guy.

I believe that if you intend to support your local artistes, go to their gigs, buy their CDs, hang out with them whatever.

Just please understand that not all musicians make music which is readily marketable, especially for local market, which is staurated with chinese and malay music groups and foreign bands.

So where can our local bands find a niche? Will we really support them when they finally appear on MTV? Or would they have fallen victim to the mentality of 'making big = selling out'?

when they make it to mtv... and if we think they sell out... by then they'd have the "secondary school girls" fan club. so no worries... they'd still do us proud. with or without our support.

guess support is the word? i mean..seriously.. local isnt really supportive on such stuff.. they dont support the "made in singapore"...makes me wonder y we admire foreign stuff so much..

also.. those that are rich to support are usually too busy with work and seldom have that spare time to admire n support our talents..

dont support for the sake for supporting. support because you like it.

if we want to compete with other countries, we must raise to the standard.

How to compete if there's no awareness? Though the local scene has seen a huge boost of late, i think that more can be done in as little time than what HAS been done already.

Come to think of it, supporting for the sake of supporting isn't a bad thing. I remember Jackie Chan once said in an interview that the Korean would go to the cinema to support local made movie, and when it comes foreign moviee...they would rather buy pirated dvd.

Slash04

we compete not by popularity but by quality and our belief.

take for example, news channel. i used to watch cnn and bbc for news and stuff. but found that cna is more relevant in terms of regional info. though the production value is not as high as the western counterpart but the content is still attractive.

so, what is the formula? identify your market. produce the best product for this market and continue to improve on it.

lately, mediacorp and some local production company have been partnering with other countries to create new programmes. through these co-production, we will learn how they think and work. massive knowledge.

while we all want the movie/music industry in singapore to improve, we must see what is out there in the market.

easy way to test. gather 50 people. let them listen to a mix of local and international music (same genre). let them choose 5 that they like best.

* bands should really try the above if you have any original material

Sean, you know why JC said that? because HK movie industry has gone downhill. JC was trying to improve the HK movie industry.

Let's take a step back and see the bigger picture. many years ago, we all love HK drama. then it was the Japanese drama. recently the korean drama. it is all because they improve themselves and market it well to the international market.

who says singapore drama may not be in the fashion in the future? hee..he..

i heard we are quite popular in china.

It's just like how some local women adore and worship caucasians to the core, isn't it? I can't think of any other better comparison for the situation we have now.

Even if a band is really good, even if we have a fantastic piece of music dished out, the "made in singapore" tagging is more than enough to put some people off. It's in fact a mockery that some Singaporeans should feel ashamed of, when foreigners appreciate our music more than our own people.

It's a culture that has been in the pipeline for generations and it takes a massive effort to turn things around. The only comfort is, bands and musicians are undaunted by this fact, and they continue to make good music.

DoubleDecker, i thought the latest statistic reports that our local man married more foreign women than local women marrying foreign men.

ok, let's leave that as that. it is not related to the intended topic discussion.

the "made in xxx" tag will change. long ago, it was Made in UK, then Made in USA, then Made in Japan, Made in Taiwan, Made in Cuba, Made in India ...

now, everythin Made in China. how did it happen? low cost, comparable quality.

let's work towards "Made in Singapore" music.

hmm..personally i feel the problem lies in the women being hard to please and all..singapore women are too influenced by wad they see on TV i guess..

i've observed the behaviour of women..be it while queueing up or wadeva it is..

well..im nt eavesdropping or aniting..i juz overheard wad they sed..

they expect too much from guys at times till they forget that we have our pride and stuff..

Erm a little qns here.. do you guys watch Singapore dramas?

Personally I never watch/ never press to watch Singapore channel. They just suck.

i wish i can make some comments i wan to make, but i think that will bring a certain harm and risk to the forum..... haiz..... sometimes what u wan is not what u get....

hopefully both the music and video industry is going to move on.....

i feel that there are a few great independent production(video) company that can bring justice to local production.... so i hope this will influence the industry in singapore......

for the music side.... i guess alot of hardwork is still needed, but the hardwork will pay off eventually... it is juz the matter of time......

DoubleDecker, :

Yea, that's pretty out of the topic but just to set things right.

1. Official figures done in 2001, 64% percent of divorces are due to wives having affairs in Singapore. Whether the figure rise or remain the same or fall til 2006, I can't get a confirmation on that. (Contrary to the fact that men are the ones who strayed)

2. What was on the other side of the picture was, local women marrying off to foreigners to pursue their "american dream" so hence, local men are looking elsewhere.

If we were to look at the music industry in general, not just bands but across the board, it bears similar traits in that manner. Of course, this is just my personal feel of it, anyone can disagree with me.

It's a culture and mis-led belief that foreign imports are always better. The best evidence that we can actually draw is through the amount of girls mobbing the boy bands. Anyone who is into real music can almost say half of these boy bands are actually SHIT. I'm being as frank as I can be, but I think there are a considerable amount of enthusiasts who shares this same feelings as I do. Maybe the "handsome" dork with freckles on his face looks more attractive than an Asian guy? I don't know ... it's really a big topic here.

That's why I said, the only comforting fact that I can be proud to repeat would be, homebred artistes and musicians are still working hard despite the injustice that has been done upon them.
