Who shaped your playing? (READ first post before replying!)

I don't mean who have you learned from in terms of how you want to craft your playing, solos, etc etc. You can only know this is you've recorded yourself over and over and over, and took a good long listen.

Who do you hear in your own playing?

I used to think I was influenced by many many guitarists. But when I really took a long listen to my own stuff, I discovered how much some players molded my playing more than others into what it is now. And those I thought I was influenced by, were nowhere to be heard.

Here's the list of guys who I seem to catch a glimpse of in my own playing.

Slash (How come this guy is on top? I realised a lot of my rhythm playing and lead playing came from him)
Gary Moore
Eric Clapton
Joe Satriani
SRV
Neal Schon
Tom Keifer (Rhythm baby!)
Mark Knopfler
Yngwie Malmsteen (I couldn't believe it, but I'd have to say my vibrato came from him)
John Petrucci (the bottom of the list? i'm amazed!)
Carlos Santana (another odd one... I never realised how much I sounded like him in some cases)

Those I thought did influence me in some way or another, but I can't seem to hear anything I play coming from them:

Steve Vai
Marty Friedman
Vinnie Moore
Andy Timmons
Robert Cray
BB King
CC Deville (huh?)
Jeff Beck
Jeff Healey
...and some others.

So, who do you sound like the most when you play?

hahah strange i was just telling a friend of mine something like this like a few days ago..

i play for church currently, and they record every single song played. most of the solos and licks that i play are all played spontaneously or i spend sometime trying to figure one out when i practice. these are who i hear in my playing:

slash (i hate to admit it cos i'm not a slash fan at all, but alot of lead licks always end up sounding like him)
ritchie blackmore
david gilmour
jimmy page
angus young
don felder
srv
eric clapton

those whom i thought influenced me but i dont sound like any of em at all:
eddie van halen
jeff beck
brian may
paul gilbert
jimi hendrix
peter green
dickey betts

eh.
slash-ya man, not really into GNR but my improvisations always sound like him.
paul gilbert- the days i practiced many many hours to play scarified has taken its toll.
hide-well x japan is my influence, and hide's stuff are simple, but ive modeled my tone after his.

amazingly, they arent the ones i wanna sound like, oh well, im still young :D

Why do you want to know what influences others have?

I think it's a good exercise to hear yourself and see how far you have come along in regards to the styles you love as well as how your own musical fingerprints have come along. You can also hear if you sound like a clone of your hero (ahem SRVs ahem) or if you sound like someone who is like your hero but in YOUR own unique way through the journeys as a person and as a musician.

I bet you will get a lot of generic answers man. But its a nice thread for guitarers to see where they have come from.

I hear country, blues, rock and silly shred macham-arpeggio in my doodlings. I think I can only say
Angus Young
Brad Paisley
a trying too hard Michael Landau
Brent Mason (not really but in a really small small fanboy way)
Steve Lukather
Eric Johnson
Pete Townsend
Stevie Ray (heh), John Mayer
Albert King, Albert Collins
Jimmy Nolan
Steve Cropper
and silly Vai wanking.

Eek.

Influences but not really in my playing, some not without the lack of trying, hmmm

B.B King (because I think not alot of people can REALLY sound like him even in their own way. Only Peter Green can)
Dickey Betts/Warren Haynes
Derek Trucks (another B.B King case)
Joe Satriani, Andy Timmons
Malmsteen
Joe Pass (not even trying!)
Wes Montgomery
Larry Carlton, Robben Ford
Kirk Hammett
Iron Maiden
Lars Frederikson

Wow.. That's a tough one.. I keep asking my other band members who I sound like and they normally can't place a name on the playing.. But the ones that normally come out of their mouths (and my mind):

Noel Gallagher
Angus Young
Slash (last time)
Matthew Bellamy (rhythm)
Billy Corgan (rhythm)

I really can't place names to my playing.. A little too mixed up. I think the person I sound closest to is my teacher.

Well the big inspirations:
Billy Corgan (Smashing Pumpkins)
Matthew Bellamy (Muse)
Mike Einziger (Incubus)
Tom Morello (RATM, Audioslave)
SRV
Jimi Hendrix
John Mayer
Eric Clapton
Slash
Nick Valensi (The Strokes)
Hugh Harris (The Kooks)
The Killers
Johnny Greenwood (Radiohead)

Alburt Yong (My teacher)
Slash
Joe Satriani
EVH
Santana (I didn't like him.. but his lick was AWESOME)

Jimi Hendrix
Jamie Wlison

Those who influence me but didn't sould like them at ALL

glimpse of in my own playing

1.slash
2.steve vai......most evident..
3.zakk wylde
4.jimi hendrix...........suprise suprise
5.yngwie malmsteen

players who i look up to n influenced by but didnt appear above;

1.randy rhoads ... :(
2.satch
3.paul gilbert

who i think i play like:

- noel gallegher (having those fill-ins during songs)
- slash (my sometimes random rhythm playing)
- bb king (those blues licks then sing then blues lick then sing....)
- eddie van halen (mindless shredding. ok not so mindless)
- iron maiden (my friend and i always do an iron maiden version of the songs we play - gallop gallop!)
- steve vai (ok maybe just my sometimes crazy whammy antics)

I play a wide range of genres (pop, rock, jazz and blues all the way to death metal) but I'm usually into being a songwriter-guitarist. I hear a lot of Chris Tomlin, Damien Rice, Oasis, Elliot Smith amongst many others in my playing. Because I can frankly say I have no talent in the guitar (just lots of love for music), I guess I never try to be one of the best out there. All I want is to make music, so you won't expect to see any of the usual greats in my influences.
