carter beauford (good feel)
akira Jimbo (went to his clinic..very nice :D )

~drummers listed are not in order of my favourites..they are juz randomly typed out~

ok i noe that i've mentioned too many drummers..but yah..these are juz my favourites..

yah and something about travis barker. i kinda find him a show-off. he likes to do fanciful stuff but he can't keep tempo. no offence to travis fans.. i apologise for any misunderstandings. this is juz my personal opinion. i only find 2 or 3 of their songs so-so.. no offence yea??

Amazing post, drummar-buah, amazing. I agree wholeheartedly.

Barker is WAY over-rated. He is a decent drummer, yes, but sadly he plays in a crappy band. However, I find his work in Box Car Racer to be better than his usual playing. But ultimately, Travis Barker is a nobody compared to people like Gadd and Vinnie C. Like nothing, zilch, null. Sickens me to see how ignorant people can be to praise him like he's an amazing drummer.

Mike Portnoy is a good drummer. But his double bass chops are sub-par if you wish to compare him to the rest of the drumming world. Over uses his hand-hand-feet-feet fills, which gets stale after awhile. And no, please don't credit him for being some monstrous, polyrhythmic, odd-time drum hero, there are many drummers which handle odd time sigs and polyrhythms better than him. No, his works aren't that novel, his influence from Peart is obvious, and taking on from where Genesis left off, his arithmetic approach to complex compound time drumming isn't that new either.

But however, one thing that is undeniable is that he makes great drum instructional videos.

haiz..i don't have a single instructional drum VCD or DVD from portnoy...in fact....i don't even have an instructional drum VCD or DVD at all..so sad...

yea portnoy's style is quite stale already...if u listen to alot of his songs u should know that he always use similar combinations..yah..and it gets stale..nothing new is coming out...but i still like dream theatre's and liquid tension experiment's songs anyway..very exciting..though stale...ya but exciting...

I seriously think drummers like Steve Gadd/Smith, Vinnie Calaiuta, Dennis Chambers, and Dave Weckl deserve more mention than some others.

Vinnie C's performance with Steve Gadd and Dave Weckl in the Buddy Rich memorial, is one of my favourites. Dennis Chambers' 'In the pocket' inspired me so much with regards to this single pedal triplet thing he does on this piece called 'Blue Matter', and 'Niacin Live in Tokyo' was good too (liked their rendition of Birdland).

Another guy to mention will be Prince's drummer-John Blackwell.
His stick twirling, single bass drum technique, and groove abilities are solid as well.

yea i totally agree man. espacially the trio memorial..that was real sweet..
by the way..i forgot to mention thomas lang =) <--- yea i like him too.

you can say mike portnoy drumming is stale already, but do you have his skills?can you play his dream theatre songs? To me he is good. Not many singaporeans can play like him or as good as him.Even if he plays the same combination,i dont think you can play his dream theatre song like the way he play.Check this guy-Nick Menza...his good too

and also,if you can play like him or have the same level of playing like he does, you can say his playing is stale or etc.....But if you cant...then dont say that his drumming is stale or common....if you can follow the way your favourite drummer's playing then it means your favourite drummer is easy to follow and you should move on to more advance drumming

relax man...i may not be able to play wat he can. we're not comparing pro drummers wif ourselves..we're comaparing pro drummers wif other drummers... don't get me wrong..i AM a BIG FAN of dream theatre and mike portnoy's playing..seriously i am. but mike is always playing the same kind of things get wat i mean??
u sound insulted dude..relax

you know why he is playing the same way?cause thats his trademark...he wants to be known that way.every star musicians have their individuality or idiosyncrasy of their own.

No, I'm sorry, but that is incorrect. Mike is a good drummer for sure, I've learnt a lot from him. And with that, I obviously cannot play his stuff as cleanly and perfectly as him.

Mike was my biggest inspiration in my first year of playing, until I started listening to other drummers and I was totally blown away. Seriously, start listening to people like Vinnie C and Steve Gadd, Mike can NEVER go anywhere close to these people. I'll worship the ground that these drummers step on, they are simply amazing.

And yes, after listening to many of Mike's work, I think it's fair to say that he is slightly over rated.

One thing for certain is that he blatantly uses a lot of Neil Peart's stuff. Not that it's wrong. He once said that Peart was one of his biggest influence, and it shows. He also brought Peart's drumming further.

But that was just that, his "progressive" drum concepts are limited and mediocre compared to drummers like Virgil Donati and Thomas Lang.

Playing single strokes with all four limbs cannot be his trademark, I'm sure he's more capable for that. It's fair enough to say tight, deep in the pocket grooving is Dennis Chamber's trademark, but to say something so basic and average to be Portnoy's trademark is simply ridiculous.

This makes no sense at all.
If this was true, all the world's film/book/culinary/whatever critics would be out of a job.
Can Ong Sor Fen of Life! make a movie as good as George Lucas? Or even remotely close? No. But she does a damn fine job reviewing.

Anyone can critic, so long as the person has enough experience and knowledge in the given field. If not, he'll just sound like a misinformed fool.

Usually, people who use this "you-gotta-be-better-before-you-criticise" argument are just feeling sore and hurt that their heroes have been "insulted".

If your idol truly is so great, he wouldn't need you to defend him. Think about it.

Which is kinda good dont you think? There will always be critics, no matter how good one is. Its just a matter of preference and style etc. If someone takes his idol instrumentalist seriously, then so be it. Dont make it the instrumentalist's problem, it was and should never be a problem.
