Who Do You Think Is The Best Drummer?

ringo star... omg beatles is just a branding dude IMO.

for me i like chad smith who can double bass pedal with one leg (oxymoron there  but u noe wad i mean), travis barker (the drum god for punk pop music) and peart, bozzio and portnoy, these 3 clearly contribute to the music melodically as well as rhythimically, which is what i feel a great drummer should be able to do

no groovers!!!
okie okie
steve jordan
zigaboo mondeliste
ahmir thompson
idris muhammad
adam deitch
clyde stubblefield & jabo starks (james brown's drummers)
check out this song called "funky drummer" there's a drum break there that funk drumming and break beats owe alot too
david garibaldi
gerald hayward-plays with mary j blige

Phil Collins... I wonder why ppl dun look at his drum skills just becos he is so well known for his singing n commercial pop music later in the 80s...his playing in Genesis during the 70s is great...n he also use the drum machine extensively for the later 80s 'pop' Genesis era...:P like in Mama, Home by the Sea/Second Home By the Sea

how do you define best?

this seems more like a popularity contest rather than anything else.
Hmm... I think it's speed, power, talent and endurance...
All three I stated above are in the upper echelons of extreme drumming...

I take my hat off to jazz greats too but I'm a metalhead through and through...

portnoy is super awesome. super awesome in fact.

joey from slipknot too. doublebass is a killer. very good drummer. he was a guitarist at muderdolls.hahah.

lars ulrich of course. but only at his peak. now he's about 40. he's still a legend in the metallica band ! he rock just by playing One. hahah

travisbarker is good too. he plays punk rock ! but has a really fast pair of hands. haha

I think the best are the pioneers and innovators as mentioned by many of u hear. I'll make a few mention off my head that think are the best coz they were great innovators that inspire so many of today's modern drummer be what they are today.

1) Buddy Rich (THere is one Buddy, the rest are just drummers)
2) Louie Bellson
3) Kenny Clarke
4) Max Roach
5) Mitch Mitchelle
6) Tony Williams
7) Billy Cobham
8) Gene Krupa
9) Neil Peart
10) SHelly Mane (together with Max Roach are two of the most "Melodic" drummers)
11) Elvin Jones

i believe this is the most credible list.. i would try to fit Steve Gadd, Dave Weckl and Alex Van Halen somewhere in there though... i'm also surprised at how many pple mentioned Mike Portnoy.. no doubt he's really good but IMHO hardly in the top ten in any top drummer list unless its a popularity contest. i would consider John Petrucci an equivalent and he's hardly in any top 10 guitarist list. we all know how gd these pple are but by there were alotta guys before them that were simply great and we just cant forget where things all began...

I believe the topic title is 'best drummer',
and not 'most influential drummer', 'greatest drummer' etc.
You get my point.

Jazz drummers are among the most amazing and skilled in the business =)

Needless to say Dave Weckl of course.

Antonio Sanchez

Jojo Mayer

Alan Evans

Roy Haynes

Elvin Jones

Max Roach

And of course Buddy Rich!

well man, best drummer is just really subjective. whats best to u maybe isn't best for me. so influential or best or watever just let people state their preferences, who knows u might learn something.
