tell me this isn't sexy hahah

Vox wahs arent very friendly when used together with gain. ( Distortion ).

If youre looking to use it only when youre playing cleanly, then Vox is rather ideal for you. ( Just like what Mr. Subversion does :) )

If im nt wrong a 2nd hand vox 847/847A should retail on SOFT for about 80-110??

First hand im unsure.

Im not sure about BOSS's Wahs though.

My advice is to go with a crybaby.

Im currently using the ZW Crybaby ( got mine at $189 1st hand after discount.) , though many dont like it due to the over compressed sound it gives when heel down eliminating tons of treble, but it seems fine to me.

Other crybabys like the Dime wah/ 535Q/ 535Chrome etc are great wahs IMO.

However not all crybabes are fantastic. Some are over priced. Just like the Slash signature wah. You're paying for the name and inbuilt distortion which is pointless and horrible.

If you have the chance go try out which wah will suit you. :D

these are wahs i have tried..

stock Vox 847 (<$100) is nice for cleans but weak for high gain, stock bypass isn't good, needs true bypass mod, spend all that $ on modding, may as well buy a better one in the first place.

Vox 848 Custom ($200+) comes standard with true bypass and Fasel inductor, but is not available from city music.

Dunlop Crybaby Classic (<$200) is a good choice here.. value for money, sounds good clean or with gain, comes with true bypass

higher up in the price range, the RMC Picture wah ($300) or Ernie Ball Wah ($high 200+) are killer wahs.

Boss.. haven't tried, no comment

Actually the vox wahs dont sound bad at all when placed before a distortion.

You just need to do an simple adjustment at the pinon gear
to make it rotate further.

But yes, its not as throaty sounding when you compare with a crybaby.

But to me i think of them as two extremes.
The Vox does cleans well
the crybaby does dirty well.

Do depends on what you want, if not get a wah with a "Q" on it.

I've tried the pro or power wah or something like that.
the one that has built in distortion. Owned it for a few weeks
then sold off cos didn't really stand out to me as anything special.

But plz do try it out for yourself, one mans meat might be another's poison. Who knows you might like it.

True... test the wah's you're intereted in, then decide..

I've gone through these:
- Vox (early 90's version)
: best sounding of the lot i've used, clean or dirty. most "vocal". but the pot gets dirty/noisy really quick. used this in the early 90's (still UK made?), belongs to my matrock brother. remembered Kirk was using this for the Black album, and saw Jimi with one in Woodstock VCR. i still have the brown carrying fake-leather bag for this.
- Jim Dunlop Crybaby 535 (this is without the Q)
: most versatile i've used. regret selling this... there's 5 "preset" tones. the best (for me) is preset no.2 (2nd brightest), because its warm and not piercing. the most "garang/interesting" is the last one (bassiest), can really hear the "whooohhh", sounds like a bombed-auto filter. bought this after seeing an ad with Soundgarden and the 535 in the mid 90's.
- Jim Dunlop Crybaby Original (GCB-95)
: the most neutral for me. love it for its "quackiness". was using this when i was in my funk/reggae/dub phase. works well with "everything" for me. sold it off in 2003.

Currently using another GCB-95 (2nd hand). Works well for most of my stuff. Was thinking of sending it for "true-bypass" mod, but i'm happy with it so far. Not bothered with the "buffered sound"...

Other mention: the Jim Dunlop Classic GCB-95F (the one with the fasel)
I've tried this a few times and feel its close to the Vox's (the 90's i used to use) sound. Very "vocal". Nearly bought it a number of times...

So, i shall say again: try the ones you're interested in, and decide after...

Very good wah information!

:) :D

... yeah the Vox easily gets the crackle sound even after I numerously spray a contact cleaner in it. I'm now GASsing for the GCB-95F, BudWah and Ernie Ball.

crybabies if u want kirk hammet like wah. their throatiness is abundant in most crybabies

i personally like the fulltone clyde. but its price is really steep.

My Vox V847 becomes a total monster for high gain and clean wacka wacka after a total rehaul of the lame SMD board with a Goose custom PCB.

At 80 bucks i got it for at city music sale and price of the mod, its still cheaper than the RMC wizard that i used to own and sounds better and more tweakable imo. true bypass summore. you can read about my writeup here http://soft.com.sg/forum/gear-guitar/gear-guitar...pcb-board.html.

After going through about 8 wahs now i can safely say that my search for the wah has finally ended.

hmm, i heard quite alot of people are using boss wah, so any comment on boss wahs? and also, how much does dunlop classic crybaby cost?

hope this is not repetitive.

Regards
