Which Dist. pedal suits my needs?

Hi all.

I m currently lookin for a dist pedal. Im using a Strat with single coil at bridge, but i want to get metallica type of sounds..

My amp (Vox AD15VT) already has Numetal and UK modern settings, which are quite ok but dont have much kick. Palm mutes and all sound dead.

So shd i get a pedal to make my amp distortsions more powerful (sth to sort of give it more oomph) or shd i get a heavy distortion pedal and play thru the clean channel of my amp?

If so, do u guys have any suggestions?

IMO SS amps dont like stacked distortions in front of them, they start to buzz really bad and thin out.

i'd recommend getting a EHX metal muff and playing thru the clean channel.

Yea, do list your price range you are willing to spend...
Get a heavier dist pedal and play it via the clean channel.

any driven amp (solid state or otherwise) would cause excessive background hissing when more gain is added; it's inevitable.

for a thick, metallica-esque tone, nothing beats a bridge humbucker. doing bottom end chugging with a single coil isn't as rewarding because the inherent twang from this pickup type would be heard.

if you think your single coil should stay put but you still require something humbucker grade, Duncan's Pickup Booster was conceived to push single coils to rival the humbucker 8)

Metallica, iron maiden... The 2 most common bands i try to cover..

Probably some versatality wud be good, like i can have nt so heavy, generic rock type of distortion.. Not just "sonic mayhem" distortion.

I think thr is a MT-2 with beez mod or something like that.. anyone tried?

pedals do influence your drive type- heavy/ mild; but the overall voicing has pickups consideration. even if you use the Metal Zone, if you play a single coil equipped guitar, the twang would persist.

was at ebenex today and took the mt2 for a spin, it's really amazing. the crunchyness and smoothness of it all.

Digitech's Metal Master (not that it's comprehesively superior), despite its lack of mid control, successfully rivals the MT-2 in terms of intensity & avoids the MT-2's nasal voicing at higher level settings.

i meant the beez mod though not the stock :lol: i was quite amazed at how the modded mt2 sounded, definitely worth giving it a try

How much does the Pickup booster help? Is 25dB of gain alot?

Im not very familiar with terms that you guys use to describe sounds, haha.


I wanna add that I wish to spend less than 150 on this pedal...

oh the beez mod. i got a chance to try #2, and it was really a big improvement i have to say. the fat switch give the pedal the bass it needs for that real scooped sound (im NOT a fan). really improved tone on that i gotta admit.
