Hi,
I have seen all posts concerning Guitar Connection with VERY MUCH INTEREST because I just sent 3 of my guitars this morning to Kelvin for repair/touch-up and was quoted $950 in all... now I wonder if it's alot haha... initially went there to check out the ES335 Lucille he brought in (seriously considering to buy so trying to sell my 335 also), so was chatting with him and decided I let him have a look at a few of my guitars that need some hospital stay...
The guitars are nothing fantastic in terms of brand or sound, but they have sentimental value to me which I would like to keep for a long long time... I don't really play them also... hmm on second thoughts... maybe I should caress them once a while now haha...
Here's a list of the guitars I sent in:
1) Fernendez Electric Guitar
recommendations:
a) replace neck to a "glossy maple flamed, dont know what dont know what" - $350
b) replace tuning machine - $80
c) replace bridge with a thicker block - $80
d) replace nut with a bone nut - $45
2) 94 Fender Acoustic Guitar (MIK)
recommendations:
a) fret replacements (5 frets), tuning machine replacement, complete setup and clean up - $250
3) 80's Pro Martin Custom (MIJ)
recommendations:
a) fret replacements (5 frets), tuning machine replacement, complete setup and cleanup - $200
I almost peng san when I read about the "rave reviews" from the last 3 years (did a search on keyword "guitar connection")... anyway, will have to wait for the guitar to be ready before I can comment further...
Anyway, after seeing so much flame at GC, I felt that maybe I should share about my experience with Kelvin. I mean, I really have a feeling that I am "ripped off" now haha.. should have checked out market first... anyway...
but on hindsight, I do have an enjoyable time chatting with him, similar experiences with Luther, Raymond (still the best when it come to toking "kok"

) or Gary... and he did explain some of the things to me about the repair and parts (although in his business he does have to run off to look at kids touching his stuff without asking, handle queries, etc)...
I placed the business with him without even trying to bargain because I felt comfortable and I don't think he can get away by ripping me off by giving me something else other than what was promised either, it's a small market here after all and I do see familiar faces in the "performance industry" going to him for jobs... well... we have to wait till the guitars are done up to tell...
The staff there can be a bit clumsy smurf...aiyo... my Fernendez suffered a kink the length of about 2cm when his helpful helper opened the counter door while he was putting down my guitar... Sim tiah!!! haha no worries, I see it myself that it was a genuine accident and he promised to touch it up for me.
Anyway, he came across to me as quite open and warm - I have to wait till my 4th visit to realize that because the first 3 times I visited he was just busy. Maybe we should be a little easy on him... seems that there are some who like his service, and who don't... could we have missed out something?
Anyway, back to the $950.... is it very high????

)
I wonder what my wife will think if she accidentally find the receipt... spend $250 repairing a guitar that cost lesser... sigh... sentimental value has intangible value... and $350 for a neck that is more than 50% the cost of the guitar... double sentimental value...
