Ok... this is meant for the older guitarists in this forum. If you had a kid, who just turned 13, and wanted to pick up guitar, would you:

1. Give him/her your old electric guitar?
2. Buy him/her an acoustic to learn on?
3. Buy him/her a starter kit?
4. Buy him/her the guitar he/she wants.
5. Let him find out what he/she really wants, then have one BUILT for him/her.

What do you all say?

I'd buy him/her what he/she wants, so I don't get stuck with a crappy guitar if he/she doesn't get serious with it. Then I could play it myself!!! whahahaha...

i'd be more concerned abt him learning the music and guitar playing than buying which guitar.

At that age, i wldnt wanna infect them with the GAS!!! Imagine selling a on luther, then meet up meet a 12 yr old. I take his $ also paiseh lol

But back to the qns, i wld get a guitar that plays easy. Not necesarily expensive guitars, but one that set up nicely, not too high action n all, so it help him learn easier. N he can bar the fret easier.

accoustic guitar

I'd send my kid to learn drums.
Then, I'd teach my wife bass.
Then finally I'll have a power trio to play Cream covers!!

i see all ur weird publicity threads almost everywhere in GEAR-GUITAR

EDIT : wahaha weith, im the freaking 12yr old kid lmao. if i buy stuff from u will paiseh take my $$$ ah?

OK here goes.

Im not far from the age started.

I started with a Squier strat pak which i got from sl.

Its decent. I mean. Come on, JM started on one too.

Depending on the music style the kid plays though.

I wasnt hit by GAS til the 2nd year i owned a guitar(I had major exams the first year i got the squier, didnt really touch it). I had GAS for effects after watching my older bro(Started with a craftsman acoustic, then moved immediatly to a fender H1 strat, but hey. he can play uber well) buy a few boss pedals(Now his board has evolved like siao)

I got a ME50. But yeah you know the story. Wasnt content. and it went on and is still going on.

hey re_unknown, u meant to quote me instead of edit is it??? LOL, i was born at nite but not last nite hehe. Imagine the young chap say, UNCLE can give me discount? This is my canteen $$$...

this is quite a weird poll man..
do what i did.. suddenly turn up at home carrying a brand new starter set.. haha.. shocked my parents over there..
anyways, judging from the quality control of starter sets, i suppose that it can be a turn-off for kids if it hinders their playability..
so the best way is to purchase a good guitar (in your opinion), not too expensive, not too cheap, but definitely playable..
shouldnt hand him a gibson straight right? give the poor kid a chance to GAS first..

You know, I think it's cool that guys like you at your age these days are getting influenced by John Mayer rather than some nu-metal band. I just got the John Mayer Trio - Try! (Live) and it's pretty darn good. He's still got that poppish laid back style which I can't dig, but his playing is far talented beyond his years. He's still very raw around the edges. Give him a few decades under his belt, and I swear, we're looking at the next Eric Clapton. 8)

Though his signature guitar isn't that fantastic a guitar though... the only thing cool about it are the Big Dipper pickups...

But Whitestrat, some ppl can't hear the guitar in John Mayer's tracks
Go listen to the Try! album ppl, if u still can't hear, it's time to visit ur friendly ENT doctor! :D

Back to the topic, I'd start with a cheap acoustic guitar to train my kid on rhythm guitar first, just cos it's harder to play solo riffs on acoustic than on the electric. I believe every good lead player is first a great rhythm guitarist.

Id think he should start on acoustic first. I started off with strat, this made me "accustommed" to the small size of a strat and the feel of an electric.

I started with elec. But i learned my acoustic chords on it. So now im starting to play more acoustic stuff to train my fingers.

Heh whitestrat, my generation, everyone is listening to heavy metal and stuffs. Not my type. Im pretty much a blues/christian guitarist. In general i think my musical styles do contradict whats "in" nowadays. And yes JM rocks. I gave the JM sig strat a test drive at Tom Lee(HK) It was undoubtedly the best strat i ever played. It sounded just right through a fender amp. Imagine a Two Rock. It played pretty well too. Neck is perfect.

I got the "try!" album last year and im still loving it. My fav tracks are "Who did you think i was", "Gravity", "Good Love Is On The Way" and all the Jimi covers. Then again "belief", "Slow Dancing in a burning room", "Bold As Love", "in Repair" and all the other stuff from continuum are great too.

Okay that was off topic.

J_m_s you should try hearing 'Neon' off his Room for Square album. Intricate guitars and he sings over it! Check out his live acoustic versions on youtube regarding the same song too.

Personally I prefer the the live and acoustic to the album version.

All I can say is: Play more strats. MUCH MUCH more... There's 2 JM strats in Swee Lee wat. But that's not one I'd get. I'd rather pay for the EJ or the Cray CS strat... (though the latter is a bit too overpriced).

erm... but I can hear his guitar just fine!!! It's a 3 piece wat!

Me too!! We both don't need to see the ENT doctor for now then

The EJ strat is one of the best maple neck/board stock artist strats I've ever played. Can't exactly compare the JM to the EJ cos of difference in specs. I jumped on the JM cos it sounded pretty darn good for a stock artist strat w rosewood board, and also cos I really like JM's stuff la...as you said, the Big Dippers are real nice.

Oh and bro, if you buy a guitar ur kid likes in the hope of enjoying it urself in the event that he/she doesn't like it...you'd better have a kid with good taste that's similar to urs hehe! I guess, since u're the dad, you can "guide" your kid as to which guitar to buy. :D

Yeah i know neon. I have every JM album i think. haha.

Neon is a cool song. Drop C tuning.. CRazy slap technique.

He uses his Novax(Novak or Novax?) for the song.

Cool stuff.

I think strats ar the most common starters?

neon is done on his acoustic guitar.
its actually not very difficult to play. Problem is tuning to a Low C on your E string may cause it to flub out. a thicker string will solve that.

now SINGING and PLAYING is insane... i often end up drooling on myself.

Ive got the EJ (upgraded with suhr v60lps) and my JM cypress mica is on the way ... i think both guitars are a milestone in production strats with features that guitar players actually want. Both are completely worth their avg 1500usd price tags. With guitars like these... i think fender CS will find it harder and harder to put out guitars that justify their crazy prices...

as for this thread:

The strat is the most common guitar shape in the world. and also the most copied guitar shape in the world. but i think acoustics are more common as starters ... being cheaper and not needing investment in amps etc...

id buy him a nice $300 steel string takamine or sumthing. But the moment he can play me something impressive (a malmsteen cover etc...)..
i'll bring him to the swee lee showcase room... and then once he has decided on his axe of choice... i'll go home and order it online :)
