haha i think starting with a acoustic is good.

yup rhythm is VERY important.

my timings always screw up when i first started palying with my band.

forced to play lead becos my rhythm guitarist is a trained vocalist. no choice

went back to practice the basics with a metronome ( ALOT OF PRACTISE ) , i would say im much more steady now

play acoustic first...
have more guitar knowledge than buy a starter pack if you want.
If not may become like my friend...
After he bought the guitar. He went home and plug the guitar jack to the amp's 'phone'. then went to shp to complain that he was given faulty equiptment. Than he say " just because i new to guitars dont think you can cheat me" and the uncle started laughing.

i'd give my kid my first guitar which is moderately crappy due to wear but well set up and playable, and see his interests sustains him long enough for me to get him what he wants.

I don't believe in starting with on a non-electric one first because i personally those are if anything, more difficult to play thus losing his interest, and it's kind of sound won't interest an adolescent as much as say EMGs running through a crunchy tube drive.

I'll get him an acoustic to learn how to play cowboy chords and make him learn Everly Brothers songs so that we can harmonise and join the next Talentime.

I would support his interest and tell him that he can buy whatever guitar he wants....from his own money. Make him earn it by himself so that he can appreciate the guitar more. From this, I can also tell if he's serious about it. And if he shows his worth and commitment, THEN I will buy him a better guitar...of course, provided that he didn't save enough to buy himself a Gibson LP, a Jem777 or an MIA American Standard Fender Strat.

That's how I started out...worked my butt off when I was 17 to buy this from Swee Lee Plaza Singapura (yes, that long ago) at just below $400. Also bought a Peavey Envoy 110 amp. Then saved more money and upgraded the pups to DiMarzio Fred, PAF Pro and HS-2 (removed late last year). Now, it's just INF3-INFS3-INF4 cos it's no longer my main (and only guitar).

Well, that's the 2nd time the bloody hamburger wagon attracted more attention than my guitar. Have to find another corner to take pics of my guitars....maybe beside my Star Wars collection...

Been playing for 5 years around there...

I would buy a starter kit or a cheap guitar because kids tend to outgrow things and I don't wanna spend a fortune on something that might be temporary. Besides, if he/she is serious about it then I'll gladly share my higher-end Ibanezes.

That is, some decades down the road when I get my own teenage kids. I'm only 18 now!

Would YOU want a starter kit? and will YOU outgrow stuff (no offense, but I'm asking you because you're still a kid to me...;)).

My parents thought I'd outgrow it, since I was the last to pick it up from my uncle and brother, and refused to buy me any guitars at first... almost 20 years later, I'm the only one still left playing, and have amassed my own collection.
