Hey guys

I've been searching around for pups that closely resemble the SRV tone. Lots of bite and growl. The best i found is RIo Grande. But its pretty pricey at USD300 for a set

I would prefer is the pickups can be bought locally.

What would you guys recommend? Im using an Ibanez SA260 (SSH)

Thanks

did it occur to you that his tone has smth to do with the effects and all..rather den juz the pickups??

some softies are gonna get so annoyed..im tinkin shred..edder..gsonique.

Hmmm... no... i wouldn't be upset... everything constitutes to everything.

Btw, coldshot76, your guitar, the SA260, its mahogany... that would be a factor (maybe) against a bitey tone IMO.

A loud Fender amp pushed by a TS808 is SRV's sound.

I'd say try a Seymour Duncan SSL-1.

Hope your amp helps u out as well. If you're using smthg like a Vox AC something then it might not get you there.

I'd recommend

A good old hot sounding single coils.
Fender Texas Special
GFS cheap and OK sounding singles
blah blah blah there are tons out there, just get single coils. As for your bridge pickup, maybe a P90 style humbucker may work well.

2 x Tubescreamer

1 x Fender type tube amp

SRV hologram sticker

A bunch of sandpaper and wire brushes to relic your guitar.

A set of 13's

Big big powerful fingers that can crush a pineapple.

Oh and medical insurance specifically for tendonitis.

fat fat fat....

anyway good ol subversion has got one on sale... its a Duncan me thinks.

To some extend his pedals does play a part, but this pups is where the main sound orignates from.

Not to mention his heavy strings and aggresive playing style

Thanks SC, so would you suggest pups of a brighter nature for mahogany bodies?

Uh.... It would still depend heavily on your tastes... the guitar does affect the overal tone so you still MIGHT not get what you want... despite getting bright pups.

I'm afriad this is where all advice & reviews come to a standstill because... you'll really never know till you try.

and reverse psychology worked its charm.

Not really.. its just that the threadstarter put forth his questions in the "correct" manner:

He wants pups that resemble SRV's tone, that have bite and growl.

Its different from, I want pups that will make me Vai. Something like that.

I use an early 70's strat with a mix of Seymour Duncan vintage and hotstrat pickups through a mesa boogie and the tone comes pretty close. Problem is I bought the pickups so long ago I don't remember which one is the hot strat and which are the vintage. The best SRV sound comes from the neck pickup. This also gives me a great EC/Cream sound, like in Sunshine of your love.

what stevie had on ....was similar to what jimmy had...and jimmy had his pimped by Bill Lawrence ....and its those very low output pu's into very loud amp !!
i had the oppertuanity to try those early Fender single...they sounded bad with room volume/gain .....but with amp gain dimed ....ooooh yeah .. single coils baby !! :D

So the trick is get low output coils (usually labelled 'vintage') ...do the tilt...crank the amp ...and hang on to your guitar volume control.

Btw you need SRV feel to wing it ...
