What do you guys think of Sg scene?

the singapore scene....

there is no singapore scene. though there was 40 years ago. with bands like quests, strollers, western union band, esquires, these and many others set the standard with their unforgettable originals and performances.

the singapore scene was killed when the filipino bands arrived in droves with their cut price top dollar acts. many professional musicians were put out of a regular job as they were replaced with cheaper but mpre entertaining performers.

imagine, five piece band with 3 girl singers and a 3 piece horn section and they play everything well. pay the whole band $7000.00 a month and squeeze them into a double hotel room. most pubs did it, benefited and definitely profited from this.
it took about 5 years for our local scene to recover but it was an arduous effort. then came the influx of deejays and the turbocharge popularity of boy bands. the filipino bands went with the trend and more reached our shores.

most singapore bands stood their ground and played what they did, when they did like blues, classic rock, oldies. few did the new suff, followed the trend and the charts and they are still alive and well.

since 1992 till now 2008, what 16 years, we are still looking for the big thing to occur but i presume it won't be anytime soon.

we as singapore born & bred musicians do not support our fellow musicians. yes, we do know of their existence, the band, the music but lets take a look when they perform live....you can actuallly count the number of people attending.

actually sometimes its not the audience's fault. i have seen bands who play good gigs, screw themselves on stage. they shout into the mics, play top 40 and dress like bohemians (i believe only alternative bands dress like that), use faulty gear and have attitudes to match.
what about those who have scored record deals?

well they actually adopt a holier than thou lifestyle. they have a cd out in the stores, they won't do instore performances to sell their release, they don't tour schools to market and promote their work....maybe they believe the record company will do all that but really, the record companies couldn't care less. the fact that they have distrbuted the cds to the stores and now we want to rake in the sales....

the events at he esplanade? i see so many great acts but the audience are not the ones who bicker, bitch, rant and rave on this soft forum BUT the common man from the street looking for some entertainment.
if anyone reading this has played at the esplanade can vouch that after every set ha a different audience....and no softies.
we all have to start having a better concept of local musicians, who the real ones are and who the posers are, after all we surely can tell good from bad.
a good local musician we have here is embryo. this guy survived and changed with the times and is doing his originals vry wel.

well i dunno if its just because of the little information that i have but I feel that one of the causes of the local scene still going a bit slow is due to the quality of demos, recordings etc. If we expect to be treated on par with bands overseas that are played here, i feel we should at least match them in terms of recording. most of us, me included, dont opt for the best recording medium due to the price and even though live these bands may be DAMN awesome, in recording they arent as good. although it may seem biased because im a drummer, I feel that drumming recordings used by most bands arent the best availabe. Compare it to the drum recordings of US bands, its almost an embarrassment. but yea.. i hope my opinion isnt too wrong. haha

Sweet charity!!!
woohoo go Ramli sarip!!!
haha jus a comment dun bother me..

tim098

bro,i believed most recordings here are done at Lion Studios.
even album recorded overseas do their mixing here. Lion Studios are 1 of the best in the region

our Papa Rock is losing his voice.just imagine over 30 odd years of rocking and only recently he was awarded with recognition.
Moreover that award no $ given. Just one to put at home

fuzz: heh like i said my lack of info probably explains that. and also experieces with bands where i heard live and are pretty good but ask them for their recording and get inferior ones. Lion studios hmm.. thanks

bro tim
i'm not finding fault with you here.far from it.
sorry if i came across hard

just informing you that Lion Studios is one the good ones here.

tim098, during the heady days of singapore underground music in the 90's, demos are recorded with analogue 8 track and sold in cassette tapes and photocopied covers.

these days the demos quality are WAAAAAAY much better than the past with the availability of digital multitracking software and interface...

I'm not too sure about how the Singapore scene is going to lead to. Music, specifically. It's future is still uncertain. The competition level is above average and a few Singaporean musicians have the skills to go international.

But the only problem is, Singaporeans' attitudes towards society as a whole. Not to be offensive as I regard myself as a Singaporean too, I'd reckon that Singaporeans are narrow-minded.

sg band scene no hope liao.

Coz judging from the response of locale music thread in relation to the amount of responses on foreign music thread in this locale forum on music. Be it gig forum(more excitement over foreign bands visiting), OM forum(majority still covers of foreign stuff or locale stuff sounding like foreign counterpart) blah blah blah, theres still more postings and responses for those than excitement on local band. Discussion on locale secen is a different thing thou. Each of us can say a lot

people keep saying sg scene is dead/ no hope, blah blah blah
saying its easy and we should not be saying
we should be doin somethin for our own local scene...
adui
its our pride after all if people start noticing sg locals musician
watever it is we are partly responsible for wat happen to our own local scene

we dont have to save the scene. The scene has always been there and before us. From the time when i gotta know about new school rock cd from bigo, lion city diy hardcore back in early 90s till now, theres always a scene. People come and go and the scene is still there.

slogan and campaign for a while, couple years might be nice, but where do we see ourself in the next ten years and how can we maintain this passion for our scene?

In years, many years time frame we shud be looking at, how to maintain this passion and what can we do

that really make sense
we should plan for the future of our scene
words of wisdom there
thumbs up to you bro!!

heh, heres a simple plan for start

If anyone is student right now, study hard, get into the elite circle/art circle/media circle etc. Use it to the advantage of pushing locale band music in anyways it can be for the furture. The last couple years, theres already results shown, from those poeple who were doing locale band music in 90s and now part of the circle in arts and media line

Oh, and along the way, find money, loads and loads of it to fund the whole thing and keeping hush hush, without giving too much views on thigns

The above shall be done in term of long terms while maintaining the passion over long period of time and really believing music locale band music scene can survive beyond the teenage angst, 20++ 1/4 life crisis to 30-40yrs++ family and other commitments in life distraction.

disclaimer-half of above is seriously not serious, while the other half, its just plainly not serious. I shall not be held responsible for any damage nor delusional thoughts anyone might have after reading.

...more of the singapore scene.

'...maybe aquanaut should speak at the soft meet up' - fgl.

well, james did ask me to do something for the coming bass day thingy but there was no follow up and anyways i just read the 'stars' he got for the bass day....i guess they donated to soft, i did not.......should be a great show for all......

back to the sing scene....

most of our talents have to make it big overseas first, then be able to gain recognition back home. also, in the record stores, how big is the section that features singapore artistes? if there is a slot, how well is it stocked?

yes, i do agree with the ramli sarip dilemma here, he is the greatest, humblest star that ever shone here BUT his record company has not done enough for bapak rock and sweet charity. how about releasing remastered editions of all his past releases wit extra unreleased tracks & demos, videos also....
i wonder if any singaporean know how big ramli sarip is across the causeway.....
real story, i was in penegerang, a small town in JB. i had about 15 workers with me digging the beach front to land subsea cables when one of the guys asked if i had met 'bapak rock'? i said ramli sarip? they all said ya! i told them i did meet him a few times and hes the most friendly & humblest person ever..they didnt believe it ...they said he is the 'bapak rock'!
our best bet now would ne to capture our music on video and use youtube as a platform to launch our music.
just like the filipino chap arnel pineda who got the job fronting journey when neal schon so happened to surf you tube and saw his band the zoo performing 'faithfully'...the chance of a liftime.
we need the support for the live gigs, we need the crowd. support local talent now!!!

then we now have the influx of another wave of foreign talent musicians, the ang mo expat type. they hold expatriate jobs, live the expat life, play a little guitar, great network of other expats and are now ripping the gigs off from what little the local muso has.
yeah, its nice to walk into a pub and see an angmo playing the blues for you but does he have the right to be there?
he already has that well paid fat salaried job with the condo perks....now its our gig they want.....does 'mustang sally' sound different with a white dude singing it?
