Welcome to club semi/ hollow

hey fenderben the powertrons are supposedly a hotter version of the filtertrons right? how do they sound compared to the filtertrons? =] also, is yours a pre-fender gretsch or a fender gretsch? care to share how it performs? i heard that pre-fender era gretsch have severe inconsistencies in quality..

yo. the powertrons are just slightly overwound versions of the tv classics. they have a bit more mids, slightly more aggressive than the classics.

both my gretschs are post fender (post 2002);

the white falcon is a late 2004, the 6120 is a 2005.

post fender gretschs are aesthetically more accurate to vintage specs, internally braced to vintage specs for tonal performance, better QC, better alnico magnet pickups, better electronics (full sized CTS pots and switchcraft jacks & switches) and hardware (genuine US-made Bigsbys, etc) than pre fender ones.

the pre Fender ones (those made between the late 80s and 2002).were basically built more for looks and had cheap ceramic magnet pickups and cheap pots & switches.

i gathered this info from the gretsch forums as well as from my personal experience.

i used to have a mid 90's pre fender 6120. it sounded.. hmm.. not very good, compared to my 2005 one which is the schitz.

the model i have has been discontinued since 2005 :(

the one that replaces it is the 6136T with dynasonics - no filtertrons.

Greetings friends 8-)

just a gathering of the semi/ hollow body guitar players here. share what you own, maybe tell us why you bought it...

i own:

after owning too many solid body units, it's actually good to hear amplified acoustics. i'm not a fan of acoustic guitars per se but my hollowbody AF105 inspires me to play/ think differently while playing...

sub, how do the artcores compare to epiphones? im looking into the semi-hollow realm now.... and the artcores are made in where?

yes, the Artcores are Chinese but they are superb, wouldn't want to praise them excessively but the QC standards are very high.

in terms of tonal clarity, the Artcores are the ones to go with. to some of us, this is unacceptable; for a semi/ hollow unit to be blissful, there should be a healthy dose of bottom end honk- that's what the Epi offers, however, i would want you to consider this one as well:

cool! i'm gonna get myself a semi-hollow soon! Thinking of Ibanez or Epis. Where can i find a huge variety of semis at good prices? Does Swee Lee sell this kind of stuff?
