hmmm... but whether that opinion is right?
Everyone can have an opinion, have all you want... 1 + 1 = 3, fine, your opinion, but its wrong.
Probably not to that extreme extent la mate. but then its true that appegios are used in jazz, although using "mostly" is very subjective. Different jazz players have their approaches. I've noticed in general(not implying that what im saying is universal truth)older jazz players(like John Mclaughin) tend to phase their notes more to arppegiated lines while newer fusion/jazz players (aka Mark Whitfield, Alan Holdsworth) tend to show more technique and melodic phasing.
Just my opinion.
It's true that usage of Arpeggios is rampant in the Genre of Jazz ... this is because of the diatonic quality of arpeggios that harmonises well with chords ... BUT
Jazz players don't play arpeggios straight thru .... they meander around the diatonic notes which is what some people call it target notes which usually fall on the "on" beat of the song (if it falls on the off beat it will sound ... erm .. off)
That is why Jazz solos sounds so "all over the place". Coz the melody is played around chord tones; the target notes .... i prefer the word chord tones because it's less constrained by the word Arpeggio.
Jazz would be so boring to listen to if you play arpeggios straight all the time, which is the same as Rock when you do a sweep or some 4 note Arpeggios ... in fact I hear more Arpeggios in Rock or metal solos than Jazz itself. John Coltrane and Chick Corea plays alot of Scales too ... except the scales they use are not common to the ear.
Anyway, that's my few cents worth ... whatever Jazz means to anyone works as long as it .. works ..
Coming back to the topic of trading licks .... I find it helpful to learn more foundational form of music. The most important thing is to build your vocabulary so that you will know what to "say" when your guitar speaks. JAzz/Blues helps me to develop Vocabulary. Some guitar players uses Classical Music for their Art form in Rock and Metal which makes their playing very interesting.
It's fun to play with other musicians and trade licks here and there and I enjoy that alot. But Ultimately, what you play comes from you ... not someone else. Hence when I jam with people, I'm appreciating what other musicians play which is very Exciting. But as for learning ... there are other sources of Music which could build my database .... then again ... that's just me.
