Trading Licks

Hmm.

For me.. trading licks pretty much require a solid rhythm background (or maybe just a single rhythm pattern which is unobtrusive, but provides the timing and rhythm).

The main idea of lick trading for me is how you can make a piece of music have two individual characters but at the same time still retaining that spark of spontaniety such that the audience (if any) is kept on their toes.

Some people see trading licks as showing off, but as always with alot of people, whether they deny it or not.. everyone wants to show off. What better opportunity when you can trade licks?

Give me a solid beat and a groovy bassline. I'll trade licks with you anytime!

haha yeah man i agree with you. Somehow as guitar players we have potential to stand out more, unlike keyboardists or drummers in general.

Man G3 rocks!!! :D

hmmm... but whether that opinion is right?

Everyone can have an opinion, have all you want... 1 + 1 = 3, fine, your opinion, but its wrong.

Probably not to that extreme extent la mate. but then its true that appegios are used in jazz, although using "mostly" is very subjective. Different jazz players have their approaches. I've noticed in general(not implying that what im saying is universal truth)older jazz players(like John Mclaughin) tend to phase their notes more to arppegiated lines while newer fusion/jazz players (aka Mark Whitfield, Alan Holdsworth) tend to show more technique and melodic phasing.

Just my opinion. :)

It's true that usage of Arpeggios is rampant in the Genre of Jazz ... this is because of the diatonic quality of arpeggios that harmonises well with chords ... BUT

Jazz players don't play arpeggios straight thru .... they meander around the diatonic notes which is what some people call it target notes which usually fall on the "on" beat of the song (if it falls on the off beat it will sound ... erm .. off)

That is why Jazz solos sounds so "all over the place". Coz the melody is played around chord tones; the target notes .... i prefer the word chord tones because it's less constrained by the word Arpeggio.

Jazz would be so boring to listen to if you play arpeggios straight all the time, which is the same as Rock when you do a sweep or some 4 note Arpeggios ... in fact I hear more Arpeggios in Rock or metal solos than Jazz itself. John Coltrane and Chick Corea plays alot of Scales too ... except the scales they use are not common to the ear.

Anyway, that's my few cents worth ... whatever Jazz means to anyone works as long as it .. works .. :)

Coming back to the topic of trading licks .... I find it helpful to learn more foundational form of music. The most important thing is to build your vocabulary so that you will know what to "say" when your guitar speaks. JAzz/Blues helps me to develop Vocabulary. Some guitar players uses Classical Music for their Art form in Rock and Metal which makes their playing very interesting.

It's fun to play with other musicians and trade licks here and there and I enjoy that alot. But Ultimately, what you play comes from you ... not someone else. Hence when I jam with people, I'm appreciating what other musicians play which is very Exciting. But as for learning ... there are other sources of Music which could build my database .... then again ... that's just me. :)

"Small bands of Black musicians which led funeral processions in New Orleans played a seminal role in the articulation and dissemination of early jazz, traveling throughout black communities in the Deep South and to northern cities. This early proto-jazz music was done primarily by self-taught musicians."
It can't be contained ...or defined.
So take all the "i know jazz" ...and shove it !!
Its abt feel and improvisation ..... so i play jazz all the time !!

In another words it can be anything to anyone !!

Well, type it out, record a video...
As long as I would be able to copy it!
Haha...

Now at least we are back on track instead of talking about what defines Jazz or Blues...

Ok ok ... let me try hor ...

This is what i sometimes play over this progression ... it's actually from a solo by Paul Jackson Junior in Don Moen's Deeper In Love. Ok It's a Rip off ...

| Cmin7(b5) F7#9 | Bbmaj7 |

Play it straight through in septuplets .... fast.

------------------------------------------------------------5-----8-
--------------------------------7---6-----------------6--------------
------------6---------5----8-----------8--5--6--7----------------------
--5---8----------7---------------------------------------------------
------------------------------------------------------------------
------------------------------------------------------------------

Another one for a 2 5 1 progression .... ok must admit this is full of small Arpeggios .... Nothing special ... just a standard Bebop thingie.

Play with Shuffle

| Dm7 G7 | Cmaj7 Am7 |

-4-s5--------------------5--4-------------------------------
-------6-----------3--6--------6-3-4-5------------------------
----------7--5--4------------------------5-----------------
---------------------------------------------7----------
-------------------------------------------------------
-------------------------------------------------------

jazz playing requires a LOT of control. I think its way harder than doing shred runs...

guitarman78, i just got a jazz book. I'll be there!!! Just gimme a couple of years....

Play this to resolve a G7 to it's tonic ...

Play with Shuffle

--6-s7--3--5----------3--------------------------
--------------6--5--3----3-5-6--------------------
--------------------------------------------
--------------------------------------------
--------------------------------------------
--------------------------------------------

Finally we are back on track!
Thanks guitarman.
I'll try to understand what you have just typed.
Still quite noob.
Need to leech more from experts here.

I promise to do more community work if I gain guitar enlightenment soon.

Ok ... before I go Orchard Kai Kai .... Would like to share this one last one .... Hopefully get to learn from some of you when I come back ... :)

showing off licks isn't a good thing or a bad thing, but a mature guitar player knows when to let go or hold back. same thing here on soft, people tend to talk so much but what they(not everyone) say doesn't hold much substance.

The mature players or the people who have been here on soft really long, (not saying that i'm one) don't say much here, you may comment on this reply, but just take a loook at this webbie, look at the threads, i've spoken to some of the older softies and they agree that this webbie's purpose is going way off. Sorry, but i just wanted to voice out my views.

Cheers

While I find it somewhat good you feel this way, I don't think your post helps in any way at all, and you just shot yourself in the foot, so to speak.

If you wish to make a change, it starts from you.... not dropping a website-improvement comment in the middle of a Trading licks thread.

Perhaps you should think about it and decide if you wish to take action, based on the way you percieve SOFT has degenerated.

Or you may move on, and well, nothing will change.

Hmm.

^ dude he gave his opinion with relevence to the thread topic in his first sentence.

As for feedback about soft and its members, people have diff opinions, which is why jokers remain jokers and the silent ones remain silent. I'm not siding with any of those camps because I joke sometimes and I also remain silent sometimes when I feel like I have nothing of worth to contribute.

In any case, I do agree with Shredcow that making a change starts from each individual, and not by throwing another log into the woodshed. I personally prefer to stick to the thread, however the inner joker in me emerges and I just can't stop from making wisecracks.

So anyway.

Any personal feelings on how soft should be run, controlled, etc. I suggest you PM james yourself.

He's the boss after all.

yes, thanks Crawldaddy for pointing out how i actually replied in relevence to the thread as he's one of those blasting his mouth or rather shooting others without reading.

i guess he's probable one of those who post stupid threads on soft.

so, i suggest you think twice before you post or really, nothing will change.
