to all christian guitarist... HELP!!!!!!!!!!

shredcow corrected the address.

basically. its a very basic rig. no need for complicated stuff.

Id say jus do Guitar>wah>Comp>OD>Dist>Modulation(Chorus n tremolo is enough)>Delay(No real need for stereo unless you get to play into 2 amps.)

whats the diff between

guitar - comp - drive - amp

&

guitar - drive - comp - amp

??????

will the sound be different?

i dun get it . churches should try out christian metal. just try it out and see how it goes

A lot of things are permissable, not covered under the Bible, but a lot of things might not edify.

There is wisdom in "limiting" or giving boundaries to Church music, just as there is wisdom in wanting to perhaps expand.

Though I must say, there lies more wisdom in "limiting".

For what purpose?
I'm sure it's cool for artistic expression, but many things need to be set right and there must be a clear call before these things get started.

Say for me, I have 2 main overdrive sounds, each reminiscent of a Marshall type OD and Fender type OD, a TS to kick both and one more smooth liquidy drive thing for the contemporary Chris Tomlin, Passion kinda thing.

EQ pedal for chimey cleans and a DD20 for ambience.

CIJ Tele... I'd say SC guit work better in church. Then again JMO. Works for me.

Worship

Hi guys, on the subject of churches playing christian metal or whether the guitarist should spice up their rigs with Fuzzes and OverDrives. The important factor is that, God gave us musicians, musical skills thus we should give it back to the lord.

Their are churches that play much more contemporary stuff like Planetshakers, hillsongs, delirous and youth Alive. which would require the use of many guitar effects. Besides the rock music , i believe that the musician is playing truly for his own worship to God. Not for popularity or glamour. Even though the music may seem "distracting" and people are not able to focus on God but it really depends on the heart of each individual. With or without music they should be able to worship God. So i believe we should not limit our christian music as it is also a excellent tool to use to reach out to the youth of our present generation. :P

God bless !

Even though the music may seem "distracting" and people are not able to focus on God but it really depends on the heart of each individual.

Isn't this rather selfish and irresponsible?

If you are up there playing in some... distracting manner/fashion/sound/anything... maybe prancing around the stage or something.

I do not think your next statement:

With or without music they should be able to worship God.

which puts the onus on the individual and disregards external factors, is anywhere near a viable excuse.

To what end? Your purpose to play is for God, good, and then you lead the people on to a mere emotional high. Perhaps that might not the real purpose of worship.

What music to play in church depends on who are the worshippers. Don't always have to be minimalist. Hot music doesn't always have to distract. Listen to how Hillsongs and Planet Shakers facilitate worship even though they often pack in quite a lot of crunch.

Generally speaking:-

U got a whole auditorium of youths... do more hardrock style. Ie. Planet Shakers and Chris Tomlim stuff!!! Turn up the heat for a few songs and then slow down for moments of reflective worship as well.

The elderly? - Acoustic guitar/piano/pipe organ. Sing hymns and some nice Christian oldies. Go pleasant and sweet. (Even though I do know a much older church brother who prefers hard thomping music. He loves to up the sub-woofer.)

U got a mix of all age groups? Quite headache... Find the middle road... 1 option is to sing classic hymns in a modern and refreshing way. Some hymns can even use overdrive. Or get some contemporary P & W songs and play with less overdrive.

The bottom line is that the music should be pegged to meet the needs of the worshippers.

And the most important rule: Christ must increase, while the band must decrease. Ie. do some riffs because it is appropriate for improving the expression of the worship song. Not because wana show-off skills. It takes good musical sense and experience to play good and appropriate riffs without distracting the worshippers.

If really that afraid of distracting, maybe lead guitarist can find a way to stay out of sight of the worshippers. Maybe stand behind the grand piano and do your stuff.

My 3 cents worth to guitariste's question is to start simple with:-
(1) 1 OD pedal that is able to do mild to medium overdrive well
(2) 1 Chorus pedal
(3) 1 Reverb/delay pedal (if want to save money, use the amp's reverb.)

hey guys.. thank you all for your replies.. well.. the whole idea about this is just to do a little research on what the other guitarist from different churches are using.. yea.. thank you all once again :)

Worship

To Shredcow, In distracting manner i mean that the musician is playing what is required and correct for the song and jumping around at the right moment. If someone chooses to repeatedly play a sweet child o mine riff while in the middle of a song or just his own fill in's which are out of the placed, most likely the musician will not be seen on stage again as the music director would have kicked him out.

For a emotional high, there are the praise songs which usually get the crowd going and jumping but there is also the worship songs which usually leads to free worship, thus it is easier for people to concentrate on God.

This is my point. Hopefully you understand.

jumping around on stage is normal. Its dancing. for god.

and yes. we should be able to worship with or without music.

who cares about your gear. but good sound or bad sound.doesnt matter. its about your heart.

the bible does state in psalms to play skillfully. you dont nid to sing to worship either.. david jus played his harp. the bible never said he sang. but his music ministered to the heart of king saul.

worship part aside. please go back on topic.

can anyone teach me how to use a compression sustainer? i have an old CS-2 its my dads. hes always busy so yeah...

I would get shocked during worship time by a musician making bad sound. If he is already trying his best... Maybe he's a student who can't afford to buy reasonably decent instrument (or whatever other valid reasons), I would still be very thankful to have him on the worship team. And then maybe help him acquire some basic but good enuff gears.

Anyway, many churches are starting to provide quite decent instruments and amplifiers... so that's also getting to be a difficult excuse to use. It's also the music director's job to make sure all the musicians produce good sounds. And not depend on the sound crew to filter out the bad sound.
