The Stratocaster Appreciation thread

well .. the layer of poly is so thick.. the flame pretty much only burns the poly... i let the flames run over the area i want and i blow out the flame when i want it to stop.... its pretty much a intuitive process..
after that.. i use a knife/scraper to scrape off the gooey muck before it solidifies.
After everythings cooled down i use a paint scraper to remove the leftover burnt paint.... and sand the areas i want to bare wood - colour certain areas generously with a 6B pencil - wipe off and its done.

wouldn't the 6B pencil stain your arm when you play?

nope... after you wipe it off... properly it will retain that greyish aged look on the bare wood. but wont dirty your clothes even if you wore white. i tested it with a white cloth.... basically wipe off all the remaining graphite powder... i also gave it a good wipe with lemon oil to nourish the wood maybe that helped...

I'm not hating here or anything, but I just can't see the appeal of relic-ed guitars. I tend to like to keep my guitars in pristine condition, even though I'm pretty hard on them when I play. Still, I think ChanMin's done a pretty aesthetic job of the relicing. Looks authentic. Better than some I've seen that just look..well...fake, for lack of a better word.

haha it was the same here for me though.... well i think my homemade relic most definitely looks relics on purpose *understatement*

when i got it , it wasnt in pristine condition anyway... and somehow the poly coated body just didnt appeal to me... the relic job did make it alot more comfortable... its like for lack of better terms a very nice pair of jeans which you tore and cut holes into and traveled the world in and its truly yours after that. visually id say my diy relic is hideous... but i cant help but love t ... its hard to exlpain... hahahah

haha i agree on that! i can never see the beauty of relic guitars, homemade or otherwise.

I have guitars that are shiny and nice. those will look pretty bad when reliced, so they stay that way. They have their own place in my collection.

On the other hand, I'd like to have a nice black strat with thin skin nitro which, after years and years of playing, wears down by itself. This strat is currently my #1 guitar, and I want it to age. Naturally. I don't want to damage it unnecessarily. I'll just be less carefull when putting it away. The only problem is, my own relic will take YEARS to finish. But it'll be a true blue aged Fender Stratocaster I can hand down to my kids. I only hope that the re-fretting after many years won't damage the maple board too much.

I can appreciate relics (strats/teles/LPs/LP variants), but a PRS relic is something I've yet to come to terms with. Guitars from makers like McInturff, PRS, McNaught and the like look the best to me when pristine and smooth.

haha out of curiosity how does a PRS relic even look like? i cant imagine.

the only guitars i can imagine relic-ed are strats and sgs lol. the others (even les pauls) are kinda hrad for me to imagine haha. maybe its my poor imagination.

oops... haven't noticed any of those nitro finished PRSes. I need to upgrade the pups on my spectacle frame???

Anyway, yeah... I agree the relic look is cool only for strats and maybe teles. Very "vintagey" and gives the guitarist a very "lao chiao" (experienced) look. The right image for playing some bluesy and soulful stuff.

For other types such as Les Pauls, some dings would be nice. Nothing extreme like worn off paint.

I once saw good old Stevie Ray Vaughan (SRV) on a video with a "relic-ed" acoustic guitar. The top looked like it had melted after being splashed with acid... and yet it sounded very good.

wahaha...
erm that one is not relic... its abused... hes brutal with his guitars man ...
he really plays the living shit outta those guitars...

haha not everyone has the luxury of dingy-smoke-filled pubs to play 6 nights a week in ma...
if everybody willing to put in the hours i think fender custom shop go bust liaoz. Any "normal" strat would be killer in the hands of a good guitarist.

Real Vintage Relic or not... most impt is for the guitarist to enjoy his instrument and use it to make wonderful sounds la~
