Ok ok... We start new thread on this...

Menya Shinchan. Located at Riverside. Facing the inner courtyard.

handmade noodles. seafood or pork based soups. Quite power. I had the spicy thick pork bone soup. full of bone marrow bits. shiok shiok. but sibei hiam!!! Who says Japs cannot take spicy food??? (wasabi doesn't count).

The char siew was thick and juicy. Just too little of it. Only 2 pieces.

The egg is power. strongly flavoured, and the yolk is a bit soft and almost runny. The way Ken's Ramen does it!!! But better flavoured!!!

The real winner here was the noodles. Yes, it's not QQ or elastic like the hokkaido styles, but it's handmade, and the texture is similar the the ones used in Tampopo's black pig shabu shabu ramen. But better. A bit softer.

However, the soup, while string and flavourful, were a bit oily. Nust go try the Soya Seafood one next time. light soup... better be good.

Heh. On to Men Tei next!!!

Ok, Men Tei-

Yesterday I really buay tahan because of you all so I went at 6 pm , only 1 patron inside slurping away.

My colleagues(many of them japs), my friends and all have been raving about this place so I ordered their signature ramen dish- The Tonkotsu Ramen

Tonkotsu Ramen-http://www.men-tei.com/menu/menu.html
Men-Tei’s signature ramen. Served with a rich white soup boiled with pork bones and spices over high heat for more than 9 hours. Topped with Men-Tei’s signature yakibuta (grilled pork) and famous tamago (egg), this ramen is guaranteed to satisfy every ramen lover’s appetite.

Each bowl is around $13.

My feeeling-

The pork was heavenly but only 2 pieces. You can order more as a side dish though. The Ramen itself was perfect to me. The soup may not appease many of you ramen lovers as it may be a bit too lightly flavored. I was busy adding all sorts of table condiments. The egg is just as what their website says it is, runny with an erm egg flavor.Nice actually. The whole meal is filling but I don't know, I felt that something was lacking. I feel that the ramen meal I tried at Robertson Walk (Gallery Hotel) long long ago was much better. But then, this is my opinion la, which strangely is very different from the people who have recommended me this place.

So ah, I think you real ramen experts better go try with a pinch of salt la.heheh. Maybe try some other flavor or what.

Damage- $13 per bowl
Side Dishes- around$ 5-6?

oooh, menya shinchan, i had the dry style spicy ramen. The spicy level made me wonder is that the true taste or for us here in singaland. I can take hot stuff and i thought it was pretty decent. Portion is big with lotsa corn, vege, some crispy "mame" style fillings.

heh, other then ramen, iam a gyoza person. Menya shinchan one was good and the meat vege in it are quite fragrance(strange thing was that thin layer of edible thingy thats on top the frying side of the gyozas, not sure what it was

nudle house ken gyoza is rocksss, texture of the skin is just right, meat filling having a wee sweetness to it. Was there yesterday wanting to eat, but damned, too early and they was just preparing for biz. Craving for thier gyoza..

From me:

Santouka shio ramen FTW!!!!!! their nitamago sucks though but that soup and that pork cheeeeek............... FTWWWWWWW!!!!!!!!!!!!
Marutama chicken soup not does not agree that much with my tastebuds but their Akaramen nut based soup makes my nipples erect. Their nitamago on a good day FTW!!!!!!!!!!!!
Miharu so far so good but I dunno why I don't go back there so often. hmmm....
Ichibantei @ Robertson is pretty good too but every visit I only eat their Tonkotsu ramen in shio. Of all things, their complimentary Kimchi is super nice.
Bishamon Sapporo Ramen so so only, no choice then eat one.
There's another one near to Boat Quay, super dissapointment, can't remember their name now. Their Japanese website show super milky white tonkotsu broth but this one in SG super watered down.

but I have a weakness for Noodle House Ken.... cold sake, charshu ramen with extra nitamago and good company/no company = very happy edder, authentic or not who cares. Anytime, anyday can whack and die of high cholesterol, high blood pressure, heart attack.

From Whitestrat:

Singapore got Santouka Shio Ramen meh? Where?

Marutama to me is so so onli... Also bery hokkaido styled.

Miharu is good, but damn salty. Go try soemthing enarer: BongOut. The Tonkotsu and Shoyu is damn nice there.

Have not tried the Ichibantei one... Must go taste and see.

Tampopo is best for me... The black pig shabu shabu tonkotsu is nice, but I like their Shoyu black pig one. They also have the hokkaido shio ramen style! Damn nice too!

Noodle House Ken also my fav!!! Next time we do gear session there! Sapporo beer!!!! Cold Sake also can!!!!!

Eh... last time Maxwell Hawker Center got one killer killer stall selling tonkotsu. Made by jap guy. Then now bo liao... Dunno go where...:(

from PatheinRaindropMoe:

oh, nudle house ken, their gyoza, ohhhh la laaaa, i is like.

i tried some from shinchan menya down at robertson quay, their gyoza is great too. Ramen portion enough to feel bloated, like the slightly tough tasting ramen.

theres another near peninsular(opposite penin, at the korner of the hotel), kadoman, one of the "i cant remember whats the name" ramen with nice seseme soup base with colours looking mildly like laksa, i like too

From snuffleupagus:

I Work for a Japanese company and My Japanese boss says that Shabu Hana @ Mohd Sultan has the best authentic Japanese Ramen in Singapore , period.

I've eaten Shabu shabu there many a times but the the ramen so so only leh, but the Japs are all raving about its authencity and flavor. Oh yeah, the price is quite killer also.

From Danelectrico:

Does anyone like cold ramen salad? The one at Tamaya Dining Bar at Cuppage Terrace http://www.sential.com.sg/tamaya.html is frickin out of this world.

From Danelectrico(in quotes) and me:
I quite like the one at Cuppage that's right next to Ah Meng's cafe. It's old school and been around forever, but pretty tasty.
Noodle House Ken! my all time favourite!

I don't mind the one at the basement of Liang Court where Medi-ya is - the restaurant itself, not the food stall.
It used to be Tanpopo and now its Ichibantei. Tanpopo is now on the ground floor very visible.

I wasn't impressed by the one at Gallery hotel
Miharu! I wasn't too impressed too till I tried their Tonkotsu Shio broth. Never did like their miso based though that seems to be the popular one there.

or the one where Central is, in which the concentration of sodium was so intense I was surprised the frickin egg wasn't floating.
There are 3 at Central.
2nd floor is Santouka, salty yes. But IMHO the tonkotsu broth is to die for and that so called limited to 60 plates a day braised pork cheek thats available all day.

3rd floor there's Marutama and Tomton(which is also Tanpopo)
Marutama I like their nut based broth, Akaramen and their stewed egg if they're consistant.
Tomton which is Tanpopo, I find OK only. But their Kurobuta Tonkatsu is teh secks!

The one on the ground floor of Great World next to the Kenny Rogers is rubbish too.
Never tried this one and will avoid. ;)

From rottenramone:

i've tried both hiyashi and miso ramen at men-tei. if i'm not mistaken its at the basement of hong leong building. i will never ever try the hiyashi (cold) again... it feels like the chef dumped cold raw veggies onto your uncooked noodles dammit!!! the miso broth tastes thick and fragrant, but cannot beat santouka (my no 1) or even tampopo (2).

pork cheeks FTW!

btw, i just had dinner at fish mart sakuraya at south buona vista shopping centre. omg the swordfish sashimi is so nice fat n freaking juicy!!!! very affordable and they don't have service charge!

From hide:

Fav ramen so far is still Tokusen Toriniku @ Santouka, I love the saltiness of the shoyu flavor in the soup and the pork cheek is heavenly. I took the miso flavor once and i'll never do it again, it totally redefines the meaning of salt.

Noodle house Ken, soup base not bad but the noodles felt like instant noodles, the char shu is too thin, no fatty parts last i tried.

7 nuts soup Ramen @ Marutama is a total failure, plus the service is terrible (long story)

Miharu is not as good as I expected it to be, I kinda had trouble finding it the first time.

Ajisen should not exist at all. My instant noodles taste better, haha.

Have yet to try: Ichibantei, Tampopo and Baikohken

btw Dan, thanks for the cold ramen recommendation, I'll go try one of these days. I've never tasted any good ones so far.

From Whitestrat:

Kyo-nichi at MSQ started on a VERY promising note. It's down the drian now. Osho at Cuppage also not bad, but I only had it once. After Ken's, I never went back. heh.

I really really would need to go check out Men-tei and Menya Shinchan.

I love gyoza too! I remember the one I had at Ichibantei was pretty decent. I agree with the slight sweetish taste @ Ken's. The woman(tm)(r)(c)(pat pend) did not like Ken's ramen at all and said that the gyoza was tasteless. I thought that the gyoza was delicately seasoned and the ramen just speaks out to me. Ahh taste buds... so subjective!

you're forever my stead hunky boi...

edit: not you bro AY bro bro bro... not you!!!!

I thought Beppu menkan was the rorks last time before I tasted Santouka and the likes....

IMHO Beppu menkan's ramen is some sort of a mish mash of styles and their INSANE chilli. Quite a bit like the old Ajisen. Current Ajisen is sooooo bad, I don't even know where to start.

rottenramone: lets! but when?

I this whole week super packed with even more makan sessions, (Old Mother Hen, Tatsuya, cooking lessons) next week the woman(tm)(r)(c)(pat pend) will be out of the country but I'll need to be back before 9 to feed/baby sit the furbies.

heh, other then ramen, iam a gyoza person. Menya shinchan one was good and the meat vege in it are quite fragrance(strange thing was that thin layer of edible thingy thats on top the frying side of the gyozas, not sure what it was

AIYAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I FORGOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That's the ONE thing I wanted to order just now, but I forgot!!!!! Damn!:-x
