The shredder's pick

Hi all, need to refresh my mind since I'm finding my 0.71mm Dunlop USAs too flappy for alt-picking. But from searching for past threads, these threads on picks very quickly become picks brands threads.

So here's the question: As a shredder, what pick do you use, and what properties does it have that make it the best for you? Perhaps if possible, you could state its cons too.

I'll start. My ultimate shredding pick would be the V-pick light. Its thick and gives that full tone, yet its three tips are smooth yet pointed so alt-picking seems a breeze. They also stick to my skin - marvelous, no more worries about 'em flying out of my hand. The cons are that they are expensive, and being very thick and hard, hurt my strings much more than regular Dunlops.

Share, people!

Jim Dunlop "CLEAR" nylons - long lasting and wont leave coloured marks on the surfaces it hits on ur guitar

when I was into shredding I used to like the Jazz IIIs.. i believe its quite a popular pick (haha)

Dunlop 3mm stubbies.

Subversion uses these too.

Kept using them, now switched over to v pick mediums.

dunlops jazz III's

pro: small and has sharp ends, hence quick pick attack and clear notes
con: the 3d imprint on the jazz III's. lol

I use Tortex standards.. the orange ones.. which is about 0.60mm.. Smooth and awesome
i used to be crazy over jazz III's but after beez gave me his mighty red fender pick i immediately change to round picks.. soon i realised thinner picks made my low strings sound more defined.. thus the orange ones coz the red ones are too thin. yellow ones are ok.

LOL who am i bullshitting.. its because Paul Gilbert uses them \m/

V-Pick Psycho Guitar Pick

5.66mm thick - actually forces one to improve their picking technique plus they just sound way more toneful than any other pick I've tried so far.

This only applies to electric guitar though.

For acoustic I got a box full of picks for tone changes but I usually stick with a thin, cheap, plastic pick - seems to bring out the acoustic guitar tone better.

Gotten back to my Dunlop USA .71mm picks, found the Jazz IIIs too small for me and the v-pick, well, too expensive! Especially if I lose picks often. I find blunt-tip smoother actually.

I also use soft plastics for acoustics, particularly nylons. Gives a cleaner and sweeter sound!

Got specific picks for shredding? I just use the small dunlop pick for everything.

Not really, but most guitarists in general stick to certain picks, so yeah in a sense for shredders, its their 'shredder's' pick, because some of them also use other picks for other purposes.

Eugene, if you find the Jazz IIIs too small, have you tried the Jazz III XLs? They're slightly larger, about the same size as a regular pick and they have an extended surface grip. Might work well for you if you like Jazz IIIs. I've got a whole bunch of reds that I don't use anymore as I prefer the smaller sized ones.

I've also tried the yellow Jazz III Ultex, same small size as the regular ones but they're a bit smoother. Pretty nice actually.

Although ever since I ran out of my favourite Kradl picks and since they're not being made anymore, I find a regular medium pointy V-pick tough to beat.

i use a Dunlop Jazz III for everything, including strumming a acoustic...tho for that have to be real real light handed :P

I've always used Dunlop Riffs... The green ones... 0.96mm. Not very stiff. Actually, they're soft. They allow me a lot of flexibility, and plenty of room to play any style I want. Shred (whatever little I do), blues, rock, pop... Even acoustics... I use the same pick throughout, regardless of whether I'm playing lead or rhythm.

anyone knows where i can get these v-picks?
at bras basah? i have not been pick shopping for a long time.

seems like worth a try.
