The Parents' Thread

Hi

kicking off a thread for Softie Dads (and Moms) to talk about parent-kid related stuff - humorous happenings, aspects related to teaching kids, etc. etc., also as a sort of online support group for whatever reason. :)

I have two boys aged 4 and 2. My 4 year old has started taking piano lessons at Mandeville and seems to be taking to it quite well - learning to read notes and I think he is progressing quite well.

Neither of them have any current inclination towards the guitar. My younger boy says 'I dont want papa to play the guitar!' when I plug in and tries to pull it away from me. :)

Both of them are quite musical inside - always singing and humming. They pick up tunes easily and hum along and fake the lyrics.

Cheers

Hey, I'm not a parent but I hold a little responsibility for my little brother who is 11 years younger than me.
So yeah, i'm was put in charged of his studies by my parents; keep track on his schoolwork and CCAs and sometimes attend parent-teacher meetings on their behalf and etc. I have to admit that school work is getting tougher each year.

Music wise, he's learning drumming now cos I bought him a drum set as a gift for doing very well in his studies. but I got hooked to drumming too! LOL
He didn't like playing the guitar too!! LOL

And I can never forget the time he put in the hamster into my acoustic guitar many many years ago, that fella didn't come out for so long........

:p I have a year old boy and I just bought him a toy electric guitar with Ibanez on the headstock. I hope he grows up to like the guitar so we can play together. :p

a lot of money ah you.

for me, yeah i don't have a kid. YET.

i gave my first electric guitar (a Silvertone Revolver) to my sister and she started learning chords.

and now she's much better than me in guitar!
as in chords. if single notes and all that, she's pretty weak. and she doesn't know how to tune a guitar. i have to tune it for her.
and we share a Yamaha acoustic guitar, which i found out yesterday from KC from Maestro, has a warped neck and the truss rod can't be moved.

and i'm getting her a white acoustic guitar for her birthday.

sigh, the things i do for love. hahaha

but the drumset is MINE. muahahahaha

I had the same inclinations before!

Oh well... I guess tru a forum its hard to tell...
I get lots of people thinking that i was a malay dude
until they drop by my shop, loL

bummer!

Ha Seekz, I knew you are not a Malay dude as I called you once to get the orange drop caps from you. :)

Neh you still can't beat my parents, they hate my metal but are still willing to pay for my music gear and music stuff.

Of course I play at acceptable volumes... Not like SOME PEOPLE.

mY PARENTS WERE RATHER STRICT - BOTH MUM & DAD USED TO HAMMER ME CHALAT2 TO DISCIPLINE ME COZ I USED 2B SO MISCHIEVIOUS....

WE WERE COMFORTABLE INCOME WISE BUT I ALWAYS HAD TO EARN THE THINGS I WANTED ....

NO ONE IN MY FAMILY WAS MUSICALLY INCLINED.... WE ONLY HAD A SMALL RADIO AT HOME. I HAD TO SAVE $$$ JUST TO BUY A MINI-COMPO WHILE DOIN ODD JOBS DURING SCHOOL HOLIDAYS IN SEC 4. NEEDLESS TO SAY - GUITARS & STUFF ..NO SUCH THING...

AS BOTH PARENTS WORKED, I HAD TO LOOK AFTER MY 2 YOUNGER SISTERS AT HOME ALONE (NO MAID BACK THEN).... NO PLAYTIME TILL MY MUM GOT HOME.

LOOKING BACK, i'M GLAD THEY RAISED ME AS THEY DID COZ I HAVE LEARN THE VALUE OF RESPONSIBILITY AND EARNING SOMETHING RATHER THAN GETTING A FREE RIDE.

I HAD HOPED TO INSTILL THESE QUALITIES IN MY KIDS BUT RIGHT NOW - THEY ARE ENJOYING EVERYTHING WHICH I NEVER HAD - LIVING IN A CONDO WITH POOL & OTHER FACILITIES, HOLIDAYS (LONG & SHORTHAUL) TWICE A YEAR, tv, dvd, INTERNET & ALL THE OTHER ENTERTAINEMENT & COMMUNICATION AMMENITIES, BIRTHDAY PARTIES & WHATEVER THEY WANT AS GIFTS (WITHIN REASON) ..

Me too, but I'm working on a 'learn the value of money' plan that I hope to put into action for the eldest soon. :)

wow..great thread...
got 2 gals..5 and 3 yrs old...my eldest is more musically inclined..could understand the first 5 frets of the E,A and D strings..

younger one is more PC savvy...yup..she could on the PC,keyed in Nick JR and off she goes..to enjoy the games in Nick Jr..no worry I've got some parent filtering software...

happy hour for Papa is at 10 pm..hehehehe

but my gals' teachers are complaining....my gals are so adamant that after A is A #..not B..

so teachers say A is for Apple and A # is for ????
so my younger gal replied A Sharp Apple...
