The Best and Worst Bands of 2008

OH! sorry if i offended you bro.
But Im curious, when comes to ....
genre thing, it's always been metal to metal thing.
That if you guys realised ah.

Genre like indie , pop , punk , etc,very seldom. hmm... :)

metal got alot of sub genres ma.. like alternative metal, black metal, death metal, heavy metal, power metal etcetc. for punk and indie, they r under rock. there's punk rock and indie rock, but it's quite easy to differentiate so people don't really give a shit on them. and pop, there's pop-punk too and some weird pop genres... the sub genres in metal are the most obvious ones... compared to hard rock and punk rock which is not really obvious...

JUST MY 2CENTSZZZZZZZ!

no worries, im not offended, just thought perhaps i should just explain my point of view.

cos i used to be one of those "elitist" type and learn to differentiate genre just to "feel good" about being able to lol.

perhaps metal is more subjected to sub-genre comparisons just because the genre of metal is so wide - from heavy to power to folk to black to death, i could go on and on. even under the sub-genre "death metal" for example, there are so-called "sub-sub-genres" like melodeath, symphonic death, etc.

another reason is maybe cos other genres (like pop and radio stuff), the fans are not as dedicated to the genre as much as fans of some genre that is not so popular or mainstream (at least in singapore) like say metal, so most dont bother dwelling and digging deeper into the genre itself to find out more about the genre, like origins, influences and stuff.

also, punk is another genre that is often misudnerstood by the general radio music listeners. most people think of bands like good charlotte, my chemical romance and such when the genre "punk" is mentioned. this makes me go "whatever happened to good old school punk bands like bad religion, social distortion, the casualties etc?" (correct me if im wrong, havent listened to punk in a long time ie ever since i started listening to metal lol).

just my 2 cents.

biopromax: maybe its because METAL has sooooooooooooo many sub-genres? after the sub-genres, they breakup into more other sub-sub-genres.. and so on..

bro, the bands like GC, MCR are punk-rock. Old-school punk are straight-up rebels.. Both are differentiated by the lyrics.. most of the time at least.

teleplayer: that may be the punk look, but punk music is another thing altogether.

and that is a bad generalisation. lots of people nowadays are heavily tattooed and use profanities when they talk as well, thinking that they are so "punk rock". but that just lets everyone else see how poser-ish they are. in my eyes these people arent punk, but merely wannabes.

real punks need not dress up/tattoo/use profanities to be punk rock. its all about the attitude. look at bad religion. are the heavily tattooed? do they use lots of profanities? no, but they are still soooo punk rock. even for social distortion, they do not use that much profanities either. sorry, biased cos these 2 are my favourite non-metal bands haha.

zullio: i would rather call them punk-pop rather than punk-rock. no offence, i used to be a pretty big fan of both bands' earlier stuff. (in fact i own good charlotte's discography and one of mcr's album)

but of course, end of the day its just a name for the genre, whether one likes them or not is another thing altogether.

whenever ppl talk bout metal, a7x bashing always comes in...sigh...
whether they turned mainstream or not...their stuff is still good...y be so specific bout genre at all?

anywayssssss...back to topic:
best of 2008 - Extreme, AC/DC, Trivium
worst of 2008 - Metallica

Isnt everything up to the individual to decide what is what?

I was a fan of A7x in the past when they did city of evil but now not so as they've broken into the mainstream charts changing their style here and there.

Though not a listener of the music anymore, one has to give them credit for still being able to obtain success with a change in style.

Metal = ??? The individual defines metal. Not every band that screams, wears eyeliner, composes songs with heavy riffs and a eye opening solo means metal. What may seem metal to me ( Black sabbath , iron maiden whatever )
may not be metal to you.

Same goes for all other genres. Thus making this so called arguement pointless.

The TS clearly stated the year 2008. I personally feel that Trivium/ACDC did quite well. Not to forget metallica.

A metal head will praise all metal. A classic rock fan will gear towards bands like ACDC.

Unless one likes every sort of music right down from rap to metal to opera. The point is everything will be subjective. No point arguing about it here.

I'll only name the best band in my personal opinion for 2008. That band is Extreme :) They have made a huge come back with a brand new rocking album. Too bad there aren't many Extreme fans here.. Maybe that explains why they gave Singapore a miss =(

Why would anyone wanna show that they can differentiate genre?

From Metalcore to hardrock to classical... so what?
:P

Just listen. No point showing others that you can differentiate genres.
Pure metal or True Metal.... sigh....

:P

If you like the song , be it. If you hate/dislike the song, dont say, like 'its not pure METAL lah brother...' :(

Wana ask, do metal lovers have these mindset?

FYI, I listen to metal too :) But I don't dress like one. hehe..

Happy new year!

Apparently, some people choose to take music lightly and decide on the choices of genres they catergorise only to end up being just dumb... Saying they love a certain genre when they know nothing about it.
If someone who listens to punk, he'll probably know what punk is. If your stuff is metalcore, you'll do likewise and browse similar bands, and also, understand the genre...
There's a whole reason why genre existed in the first place... For easy categorising. Sadly, it's not the case today.

About the mindset, it's more of trying to correct the person, but somehow, it make others think otherwise... :)

What i don't like is that,

People would say, Metalcore is not metal. Pop-punk is not punk rock. I don't listen to it.
I mean so what if they/we blend in other elements in :) its ok to categories genre. But please don't say till like 'im a die hard metal fan' haha.

Its funny. oppz sorry if i sounded pissed. Its becoz my sentence construction sucked :)

My -0.02 cents.
10 dollars added.

Best bands of 2008?
I would say Amon Amarth for yet another good follow-up release with Twilight of the Thunder God.
Probably one a consistant band in it's genre...

Worst band?
Trivium... Seriously, what's "Shogun" all about? Looks like Matt Heafy's bringing in his Asian heritage more...

amon amarth is probably one of the bands that can still get much fan attention and good reviews even though their albums have similar styles of playing. they sound pretty similar to me, all their albums, but somehow i still enjoy headbanging to any of their tracks. lol.

No offense. I like the music of death/black metal, but I really dislike the growls. So that's like the only thing that kept me away from liking these bands. I'm a vocalist btw.

For sure...
The only change this time round is that probably they got sick of praising Odin all the time and focus on Thor... Who is next? Maybe it's time to write songs about Loki... Lol!

perhaps Tyr? but damn, Tyr has already praised Tyr, so no more originality there hehe :p

and the list that you gave?

trivium shouldnt be there! slipknot shouldnt be there! or maybe they just ran out of albums to put in the top list :p

If you google and look at some of the list generated for best album 2008, you'll see these list of albums on most of them...

TV On The Radio - Dear Science
Fleet Foxes - Fleet Foxes
Portishead - Third
M83 - Saturdays=Youth
Deerhunter - Microcastle
Vampire Weekend- Vampire Weekend
Girl Talk - Feed The Animals
Elbow - The Seldom Seen Kid

Ok, i'm gonna try and listen to see if it's really an album that makes the cut to be the best of 2008... All are somewhere along the Indie genre...
