well, i kinda have sweaty palms whenever i play (in fact i feel warm whenever i do lol) anyway, after playing, i always apply fastfret and wipe it clean and put it away in my gig bag. in a few weeks times they faded from their shiny silver to black

did my "acid" hands cuz this or should i buy better strings like DR??

or something else??

thanks

Life span of a few weeks should be ok with the normal d'addarios and such if you play a few hours daily 8)

I'm blessed with non-sweaty palms :P

when it turn black, it hasnt rusted yet.. its just that the glossy protective layer is gone but its still very much playable. When its rusted you can feel the jagged sharp edges of the string and the string will turn brown.

You can try using string cleaners, wipe around edges of the string every time u lay your hands on it.its quite a troublesome thing to do, so i suggest getting the coated strings if ur lazy :)

my strings have already started rusting and browning near the bridge. think better start restring with DRs already. sigh...there goes $20 from my wallet..

I got the same problem. Sweaty palms, so i use coated strings. Problem is, if you bend alot, the coating comes off the part of the strings that touches the fret, after awhile, that part will get rusty and its gonna be hard to bend too. But, its much better, since ur strings last longer and are nicer to bend. I use string cleaner too, like wipe it once in awhile. works for me

Hi fenderrules,

Have you tried wiping strings with WD-40 after each session? I do that all the time and it prevents rust from forming; although it doesn't stop the strings from oxidizing and turning dull.

My current is close to 10 weeks with little or no rust. Cheap D'Addario's at $5.50 a
pack. Dearer strings do not necessarily mean less corrosion.

If you use WD40, you wouldn't want anything getting into the fretboard.

Just play with different brands, different brands react differently with different people.

Its all about the tone, but at the end of the day, changing strings every week can be a chore.

I am against coated strings, unless you play metal or am heavy on efx/modulations, they sound duller, less harmonically reactive and I think have higher tension.

My action is pretty high so it helps a fair bit as I coat the strings with WD40. Also the Fender is scalloped and lacquered, so it doesn't really get into the wood per se.

WD-40? Hmm... dunno if it's advisable. I'm sure it prevents rust (as it's designed to) but playing WD-40 coated strings seems like a health hazard to me. :smt102

I'd suggest that u change a new set of strings first.

Then from this set onwards do the following:
1. Get tissue
2. Use tissue to grab string and pull thru, removing all the nonsense from ur hand and rust.
3. Fold tissue to a clean side, dab it with fast fret/jim dunlop string cleaner/ DR stringlife/ blah blah
4. grab string and pull thru with dabbed tissue
5. fold to dry side.
6. grab string and pull thru to "dry" the string.
7. Repeat for other strings.

I tend to believe the string cleaners have some "water base" tt will aid corrosion if u leave them on the string. Yea so tt's probably the main reason y step 6 is inside there.

Anyways this is my method. Approximate string's lifespan is abt 2-3mths.

And keep ur guitar in a case at least. It helps abit by keeping the strings warm and fuzzy.

Make it a point to wash your hands after application and playing. Rust itself is a health hazard too if not cleaned...lol.

Ha..haha... Yeah, true, true. Well, a matter of iron oxide vs petroleum distillates. Just make sure one doesn't do the Kentucky finger licking good stunt while playing. LOL.. It's quite amazing what WD40 can be used for. Even for baiting fish! 8O

i wipe fast fret over my strings and leave them there..
i dun wipe em after applying.
i wipe before playing
and wipe again after playing..

do u think coloured strings are worth it? and what strings do u guys feel rust less compared to others (non cotaed strings)? i use blue steel and the rust is retarded!!!!

hey ive got the same problem too...
i think dean markley nicklesteel strings are good...
it'll last u for quite a while... and its like 6.50 only! :D

^ Hey, I use that too! They're really good...but mine blackens like a few days later, never rusted before though, just turned black...

ok ... basically ... i use the most cheapo way ... i just rub my strings with A4 printing paper ... it removes rust totally ... it's cheap and my strings lasts for quite a long time. Only thing you gotta endure is the Screeeeeeeeeech!! :)

WD-40?? better than fastfret? i do wipe down every session. i apply fast fret firmly over the strings and i wipe over and under the strings
