soundcheck

the following is a test of our sense of hearing and direct thoughts upon hearing. After listening to it, do leave a comment on what do you see or hear in it. Words of truth will be greatly appreciated(any insults is fine as well, seriously

The clip was done with amp miked up in the wrong way. The gear used are table fan, electric geetar, 1 amp, 1 delay and 1 distortion. The clipping/static/noise was on purpose and in order for a fair testing, listening to it via headphone/earphone at high volume will be best, if not, any speaker is fine as well. Just remember to turn up the volume to unbearable condition.

Before we start, just a friendly reminder, the clip is of extreme boredom. Unless willing to spend the next 7 min plus of your life(which i cant pay you back) for this test, go ahead and click it. If not, bypass this thread.

The basic requirement is that once you click on the link, there will be a need to listen to it till the end. Any prematured stopping of it will present bias in the test.

So, once it started, let it go all the way to the end. once ended, if willing, do leave a comment.

Thanks for the time

Honestly, it reminds me of "musique concrete". Basically background sounds that leads up to something. Partially, also remings be of an old 1950s black and white movie... dunno why. maybe it's the monotony.

Initially, I almost wanted to type "those arty farty cmi local movies about drug abuse, desparation and desolation". But then again, that would be too much of a clique.

Then again, it does remind me partially of the SANA ad campaign on drug abuse.

I must not be negative... I must not be negative... I must not be negative... I must not be negative... I must not be negative... I must not be negative... I must not be negative... I must not be negative... I must not be negative... I must not be negative... I must not be negative... I must not be negative... I must not be negative...

heh, no need to hold back. Iam just interested in the most straight forward and immediate response, without much changes or "correction" in any form.

If its boring, its boring
if its nonsense, it is nonsense
if its indulgence, it is indulgence
if its a waste of time, it is, as well most probably

thanks though, for listening. Much appreciated

I clicked... and dude, where's the shred solo?

This sux.

Not more than 6969 notes played. No even a hint of widdly-woo-widdly-wah-chugga-chugga!

You sux.

*Psst, can I guess the distortion pedal? If I guess right, will you crown me Forum Tone King?

ambient sounds. i like that aspect and appreciate it for what it is (they sound pretty good actually, nice tones!), although a touch more sonic elements / structure might do wonders for long term listenability (ok ok i'm still a sucker for a good melody). i do find the repeated digital noise / clicks and pops a bit distracting though...that part reminds me of the first time i put Tortoise's "Millions Now Living Will Never Die" in the CD player and thought it was a bum disc...

am i wrong in thinking that this is inspired by the sounds of flying saucer attack, windy & carl, labradford, bowery electric, hammock, third eye foundation?

no chance to listen to it cos I'm at work but based on the name dropping from danelectrico "flying saucer attack, windy & carl, labradford, bowery electric, hammock, third eye foundation" I got a feeling I'm going to like it.

i was really preening my ears up for the electric table fan sound....I must say it is most probably a genre all to itself. Post-Pathein-rock

heh, the pedal is not the focus. I guess with the blardy blood blood relation we had, you will know what it is. Knowing the pedal will only cloud the judgement and the most immediate thought upon listening. The only thing that i can say is that the whole session was done thru a bass amp and originally 12 plus minutes long. It gotten so boring while listening back that i have to cut down to 7 min plus and leaving only the phase with more things going on.

dan: heh, thanks for the listen. The clip was done while testing some gear which i gotten recently and out of random manipulation mainly. As i was doing that, the fan which was blowing in my direction just happen to be around the geetar pickup area and sorta create the squealing/droning sound going on. Decided to fidget around with amp feedback as well. The only part where i did play the guitar is mainly tapping few strings and some vibrato going on.

ahh, the bands mentioned, i do like most of them. Heh, if to really admit which ever band/group which i have stolen influence from, there can only be one, eluvium! I is like eluvium deep deep.

one interesting thing bout influence/inspirations for the sound which i love and play around with. Bout 4/5 years back, while fiddling with the dl4, one of the setting(swell delay) got me into a trance like state as i was playing. One of the characteristic of it(at that time) was the "attackless" sound while controlling the picking dynamic.

With that setting, i went on to add in one more delay and 2 more reverb on top the dl4(with swell delay) to get a prolonged clean droning sound(guitar--->reverse reverb--->dl4--->reverb---delay). It was then, i knew i have found something which i can play for a long time while enjoying that moment of going into a timeless/trance state.

And thanks to edder, who intro some good music to me at that time, i found the connection between the sound that i gotten from the pedals and the music which he intro.

another 1 year plus after getting the drone thingy from the pedal, happen to catch randolf in action and hearing a particular sound which he was using then. It was similar to the clean drone thingy i was using but much more musical and widely spaced sounding. Turn out to be a certain delay setting in the magicstomp. Ended up getting one(and later another 2 more plus a ud stomp later, those pedals are really good for modulations)). Semi retired the 2delay2reverb setup and just using magicstomp instead to get the drone thingy

And the last piece of pedal which inspired, goose pan blend. That was the last piece that complete the whole picture.

Again, thanks for the time to listen

really ah... the magicstomp can replace that multiple pedal seamless drone? haiyah.... should've bought one earlier on!

yes it can and more musical actually.

Shud grab one if theres opportunity. Doesnt matter if its the older mk 1, bass or acoustic stomp. With different firmware, it can be changed to function as any one of the 3 stomp.

Bro bro, get one, i is pass you all the needed firmware(to use as bass/acoustic/electric stomp) and all "bro brosss" patches to do those drone thingy. Self tweaked to perfection one, confirmed can make geetar sounds like dream synth

pathein, thanks for the insight. very creative use of a fan i must say. it's true that you can get also some pretty interesting sounds from a guitar using other errr...vibrating items heheh. hmm. i will check out some eluvium back catalog. I have Copia on my ipod (guitarless / string based ambient macam brian eno!) and i like that quite a bit...

i like the idea of getting lost inside sounds and tonalities, but i'll often fall into temptation and eventually make it sit alongside or become a rhythmic pattern or stretch out a melody somewhere. guess i'm still too much a traditionalist structure kinda guy at heart. but more power to brave sonic explorers such as you!

Seventheaven. :D

That said, I enjoyed the piece. Its something I don't listen to and hence, a very fresh experience. I also can't listen to it and nitpick in the usual Shredcow way - this isn't about inane shredddd skills or the impact of harmonics colliding... but I like the vibe.

I do like the harmonics though. Ears perk up when I hear chords and notes crashing together... very alive huh?

hehe, bro, you're too kind. A big part of that exploring actually just about hiding in the bedroom and indulged in extreme indulgence, with pedals

TGP has a fella trying to rehouse his MagicStomp in a bid to get it to live longer without fear of stuff breaking... also trying to reduce the footprint of the MagicStomp. Worth your while I think since the dang thing is getting harder to find.
