small tube amps

I can't think of any amp that's not too loud and still sounds good cheaply. Yeah, if you got the money $1K++, isn't a problem. Otherwise, it's difficult to find any locally.

epi valve junior, not sure whether available here though. a friend in Aussy played for me, sounds good.

You can have a custom order from Sweelee, it's not too expensive - I think the head alone is under $300.

I'm not sure about that amp though - from what i read, it's still damn loud.

If you are so inclined, check out the P1 project at www.ax84.com

It's basically one 12Ax7 and one EL84, all materials are readily available at Sim Lim or Martin Electronics. I built one (slightly modified) running into some no-name 8" speaker I picked up when NUS electrical engrg was having a lelong lelong  It still gets loud if run into a 10" or 12" speaker, so it takes a bit of experimenting to get the right combination for power amp distortion at manageble volume.

But don't try it if you don't feel up to it. Getting zapped by lines voltage is no fun

I think lowlife was selling a little 80's Silverface Fender champ on Luthers site a while back for around $500. That is a 5watt plus amp and would be plently loud for a living room. The little Laneys (LC15 and VC15) are louder and not as hardy.

Put up a request on Luthers and see what comes up. If it's for a room, then 5 to ten watts is enough. If you want the amps to be louder then you can put a more efficient speker in.

Please stay away from the kits as the quality of components is often poor and build quality suspect. The danger involved is also great.

cheers,

Mark.

Hmmm the epi valve junior seems to be getting good reviews. 5 watts class A. There's only a volume control though so if you want amp distortion you'll hafta crank the amp up. And no tone controls whatsoever.

edited after Dongarra's post

I use a Laney LC15R myself. Good tones, with ext speaker output, efx loop and line out (or headphone out, can't remember) for recording (doesn't give the option to mute the speaker though. doh!).

But yeah loud as hell though, I can never get the volume pass 3 in my home.

I think i saw it at Swee Lee for around $1k before discount... It pops up on Luthermusic ads for ard $350-$500 though.[/i]

I'd skip the ax84 stuff... have no skill in soldering nor handling electrical equipment.

Hi Mark, nice to see you around. I haven't thanked you enough for the advice you've given me. If you would come back for holidays, let's meet up for coffee. :)

Raymond

Any time Raymond. It's been a pleasure.

Don't know when I'll be back in Sing though, not for some time, so we'll put the coffee on hold.

Hope your gear's been treating you well.

cheers,

Mark.
