Singapore Government's move to ban porn sites is FAIL!

Brings back memories (shows how old I am) when pornography was total blackout in Singapore...
A HISTORY OF SEX IN THE LION CITY

ERA OF THE HARD-UPS

You can only find evidence of skimpily clad women in fashion magazines (and they weren't all that impressive). So only places you can find BANNED material is at the old BRAS BASAH road where the Indian Uncles running small bookshops will dish out the latest but expensive PENTHOUSE and PLAYBOY mags only upon special request.

Of course there will be well travelled school friends who will have a HUGE stack of them. Mind you these was even before VIDEO industry and way way before INTERNET...

Still people make do with live-experimentation either with their girlfriends (oops, fumble fumble) or have their first experience with an older woman (usually a sex-worker and under coercion or because of peer pressure). In fact, having sex with a sex-worker is not uncommon in your father's/ grandfather's time.

THE VIDEO AGE
Eventually the VIDEOs became available and catching diseases from prostitutes became less common. VHS Videotape swapping in schools and having caned in public by the sch principal was common those days.

Magazines like PENTHOUSE/ PLAYBOY became commonplace due to advent of cheaper air-travel. Availability means less of blackmarket activities. Old Bras Basah bookshops relocated to the newer BRAS BASAH COMPLEX and spelled death of the underground MAMA Bookshops. Geylang becomes more stigmatised as ppl move away

R21-rated movies make headway, YANGTZE Cinema takes advantage and soon filled the seats with dirty old men and their China born GFs.

THE INTERNET AGE
Early :
PORN Material becomes freely available. Social networking becomes freely available leading to rise of ADULT friendship sites. Fragile social structures such as marriages experience testing times due to sudden availability of potential partners in cyberspace and often leads to real-space promiscuity. Coincides with availability of VIAGRA and secondary sexual awakenings, more foreign talent, etc.

Mid (NOW) :
Government steps in to curb promiscuity and bans porn websites. All appears well as numbers of porn related activities decreases, statistics show improvement of web-safety. Stuffy parental groups gave out a sigh of relief....

Late (near FUTURE) :
Increased in teen pregnancy... Geylang experiences boom with increased numbers of STD's. HIV numbers ballooned over just a few years. Porn magazines make a comeback with huge sales numbers....

OUR FUTURE... YOU KNOW WHAT? IT SOUNDS JUST LIKE THE BEGINNING!
:confused::confused::confused:

duh!!! Seriously, for anyone who saw the word "proxy" since yesterday when it was mentioned in the thread, would have already google and found out how to do it....

slow folks should not watch porn to begin with...

anyway, avenue Q wanna tell everyone, click click...

woooooooooooo ladies ... if U like my body ...and U think I'm sexy, cmon baby let me know ....

yeah

Imho, the only social problem pornography creates is when it infringes upon the rights of other people. You have websites on the internet, such as Singapore's own SGGirls, where voyeuristic shots of women are taken and posted without their knowledge. Those should be the real targets for censorship and legislation.

i strongly agree.

the only websites that should be banned are those that promote molestation and violation of unaware women (and in extremely rare cases... men....). that is a true crime and a morally incorrect culture. sggirls.com is a good example of a site that should be banned...

other than that, i have no objection to pornography whatsoever. i don't see how it can destroy lives, marriages, or families when used on a normal basis.

the MDA's move to simply ban pornographic websites outright reflects a society failing to see situations at a level beyond that of a social blindfold.

this is not the only area where Singapore fails embarrassingly. and there will be many more to come.

sign ... 1st no chewing gum then now no porn ...

whats next? no BPL so that we have no choice but to watch S League?

If we support those "Don't eat shark fin", "Adopt a cat", "Feed a child", we should put the same mind to say no to porn?

The worst thing is, these porn site are rip offs. There is no financial gains for the producer, production crew, actors/actresses ..

If you want to support the industry, you have to do it with your money and not 'demand' for free sites.

because porn tend to objectify women as sexual objects, there can be no justification in support for porn in our 'egalitarian' society.

Just like gambling, smoking, alcohol, porn will only be a problem if one consume in excess, or it impairs our daily functioning. For most of us, we do not have that problem, but as long as porn exist you cannot deny that there is a possibility that someone will suffer.

And i think there is a misconception that porn is view as a safety valve for sexual desires. Porn do not ease the sexual desires/tensions in the long term, it merely delays it. The sexual desires/tension will be back with greater intensity as one builds up tolerance.

And singapore's web censors arent as powerful as china's...
and we would prefer it that way.

i guess other than being angry about the fact that the MDA has its focus completely off, i'm also disappointed that the government actually chooses to spend money this way.

how much are they paying people to ban the sites?? a few hundred SGD? a few thousand SGD?

to seek out the porn sites, you first need to pay people to sit behind their screens searching for targets. to ban the sites, you need to pay people to run the necessary censorship equipment/programs. to manage these new employees, you need to pay a whole department of workers for it to run.

i think the money could be much better spent. donating it to charity comes to mind first. if the amount is large enough, perhaps our government schools could receive those funds to build better facilities and run better educational programmes?

Did you know that Singapore ranks one of the highest in the world, in terms of demographic proportions, in pornographic viewing? Interesting fact. :)

daryle, banning a site is as easy as finding the site. Really, just key in the domain name and the site will be non accessible.

that's very mathematical! Haha!

everytime a teenager jerks off to porn , take that amount of sperms in the seminal fluid divide by 1 million , -50 top50 pornsites by singtel and starhub, divide it by 2 again. that's the amount of new pornsites popping up per ejaculation.

You're right, the possibility of someone suffering will always be there...but then again, that can be said for everything and anything, including music, doesn't it? The onus is always on the individual to balance his own family.

That said, I still wonder why the government isn't targeting places like Sammyboy and SGGirls if they truly want to deal with social ramifications. Sammyboy encourages the trading of nude pictures without the consent or awareness of the women involved and explicitly encourages prostitution. SGGirls often features pictures of underaged females. These two websites are easily the most socially impactful websites when you're talking Singaporean context.

Free porn sites NOT= No revenue for them
They can charge high premiums for ad spaces if the sites become popular enough. By visiting the sites, we are actually supporting them by driving traffic to the site, which then attract investors to put up their ads there.
It is similar to music sharing, even if you do not buy a band's cd, you are actually supporting them by downloading and listening to them, and sending their songs to people in your social circle. Their names get spread, they may even be able to tour as a result of gained exposure.
