Singapore Government's move to ban porn sites is FAIL!

if you think deeper, it ultimately helps the copyright owner by promoting it.

also, look at your views, very biased and superficial.

I think too deep sometimes, that is why you feel that I am very biased.

Anyway, give you another example. If a person keep eating the free samples at the supermarket but never buy anything, is he/she promoting the food? Is the company benefiting from such act?

I can't believe we're actually having a conversation comparing porn-hosting sites to illegal mp3s. :-D SOFT WIN.

Both are intellectual property. When abused, it is the artist who will suffer.

Unless you are talking about 'armatures' who post their 'work' online without the intent for commercial gains.

But then again, by banning the sites isn't the rightful owner of said intellectual property being deprived even more of his income? Most of the time when such mass government mandated bans occur, the targets are the more popular "official" sites. By banning these sites, what you effectively do is create space for IP thieves to host and distribute porn over P2P networks and flourish.

And I can't believe I just spent a paragraph defending IP rights, let along the IP rights of porn.

I'd answer : the company benefits from this free samples eating act IF I gobble them down and say it out loud how good it really is, knowing singapore's typical "monkey see monkey do" mindset, everyone wants a piece of the free stuff. but only a handful will really buy. Which in this case the "singaporean company" will tell the sales staff to "limit" the freebie distribution for fear of unnecessary loss.

my view is Singapore is all about "Wayang Kulit". this action is just to show that "they are doing something about it." not 100% obliteration. but "something" . like 1%. it's the same as geylang raids, the supermarket brothels are still there (not to forget to mention they now operate islandwide even on buses/town/office area) but at least the "pasarmalam" is gone. that includes the crackdown on piracy of music and movies. the VCD/DVDs are gone. but that's just 1% vs the amount of torrent access out there. just let em wayang lor, a needleprick won't bleed gallons.

The revenue goes to the illegal website, NOT the video copyright owner. It is like downloading illegal mp3 without any money going to the musician. Sad right?

A porno website is not illegal unless there's individual(s) who is/are under the legal age of 18 involved in it, and also those fetish sites like beastility(illegal to produce, not illegal to watch)

As for the video copyright owner, which in most cases the production company, they do charge for distribution and access to their videos. If not, how are they going to survive? Pornstars do get paid(for the females at least. I'm not too sure about the males.) The directors, the camera men, and rest of the crew get paid too. Remember pornography is huge, it is a billion dollar industry.
.
I wouldn't want to start on the illegal mp3 thing, there's another thread for it already.

idontreallylikepapayas, I think you have misunderstood my 'illegal' website. I am not talking about those legitimate adult video business website. I am talking about those ala Youtube style site where they upload other people's work.

oh wait..... could they be blocking the sites purely because they work like er.. youtube? they host otherwise illegal uploads of others' works without paying the er.. artists the fees they deserve.

i noticed that MDA did not block sites where you have to pay for access. could this just be a matter of copyright infringement and not actually banning all porn sites outright?

damn it.... if that is so, then i'll have to take back my statements.

is there someone here that can provide me with an official MDA statement for the banning of the porn sites?

LOL, why dont we just go and find another site to fulfill your needs?

govt only blocked several sites, amongst many others. :))))))))

You mean like copyright infringements?
Those are quite hard to stop, though websites like YouTube do try their best, but with thousands and thousands of video uploads a day, not to mention the quick speed that people manage to find them, it's quite hard.
