iansoh : well honestly asus / hp mini etc all these "semi laptops" were never meant for recording I believe because of (for asus eee) the SSD. it's been discussed before among us (guttaralpiss/cheez/me) in an old thread. but I chose to abuse the (solid state drive) SSD. and so far it's working very well surprisingly. even if asus is only 900mhz 512mb ram and 4GIGABYTE hard disk (reminds you of the days of quantum fireball hdd eh).
i can't really answer your audio question very well here, because i have very little understanding of "fixing latency" problems myself apart from trial and error with settings and using "better hardware" . and besides my DAW's hacked (personally by me) from 600mb cd to 200mb to 30mb to 10mb only so I can do with what I basically need instead of having all the useless extras. so of course naturally this eeepc would be able to handle a "10mb DAW" ? and latency wise I'm using Zoom H4 as a USB audio interface so i don't know if that helped in anyway with the audio side. but I've recorded vocals with 5 other tracks (16bit 44.1khz WAV files) playing together on the EEEPC with no problems! in fact the funny thing is you may think 900mhz and 512mb ram can't do shit for audio, but I often run out of hard disk space first (4gig only) before I run out of memory to do recording!
oh ya besides, my XP is also nlited (nliteos.com) and customized/tweaked big time. so a fresh install with browser/officesoftware/videocodec only take up 1.5gb hdd. that could have assisted in the audio side also. sorry I can only talk so much and give you a vague answer. everything counts in the audio side, whether is it the audio interface , the OS installation configurations, the DAW configurations. and the maintenance of the computer itself. hope this helps!

Yeah, one will be surprised what sub-1GHz PC can do! My old PC - P3 933 MHz with 512MB RAM can run 30+ tracks of samples (at 160 notes polyphony) and up to 5-6 audio tracks simulataneously! Of course, that machine ran on Windows ME optimized with 98lite.
Didn't know you use nlite! Cool! I use XPlite currently. My XP looks and feel like Windows 98. Who cares as long as it's stable, fast and gives me all the horsepower I need for DAW! Now that almost everything is Vista, vlite (Vista version of nlite) may become more noticed.

yeah, but still i'm not going with vista for a while until everything is confirmed stable. for now I swear by XP haha.
anyway yeah, too many people take the "old" PCs for granted. I had a 2.4ghz celeron 512mb 133mhz ram. recorded 16 tracks 24/48khz with it and works great.
so where is YOUR PHOTO cheez?

All the "least expensive" and free, workable solution (workaround?) for me... :mrgreen:
- 9 yrs old Sawtooth "Earache" G4 Mac
- Ableton Live 5.01 w/freeware plug-ins
- $80 Toneport GX
- old iPod earphones or $50 Sennheiser Headphones (for recording/monitoring/mixing)
**most times i load the "mixed songs" into the iPod to listen/compare/mix and check eq/volume

** My observation:
If you're a "free VSTs/plugins" hunter/user like me, there's tons of them available for download for the Wins platform in the www. That's where "cheap" Mac users/lovers (like me) are at a disadvantage with our OSX. So its always good to have a Wins machine at your disposal... :mrgreen:

Echoist, I got the same Acer desktop replacement as well! Served me very well for a number of years. But it gave me quite a bit of problems - first the PCMCIA slot wasn't working and have to get it changed, then the monitor died and got to get it repaired etc. Wasted so much of my time travelling to and from Jurong!
Also noticed you have Norton Antivirus and a few other non-DAW software installed. I'm sure that will bring your system speed and resources down. Do consider dual booting. I've dual booted mine. Anyway, my Acer is really dying. My second Acer and both bad experiences. I'll never get an Acer again (so said my wife).

Ohhh my... Mine is still going strong. It was dead last year and i left it aside for a few months. Tried replacing the hdisk and still it won't load-up. So i sent it to Jurong (Acer svc center) to load Windows XP. But i don't have to pay anything even though it was 3yrs out-of warranty...
Yeah, i did consider dual booting since i read about it in CM mag years ago. But... i really don't know how to do it!
Never did tried... I'm clueless when it comes to Windows (different with Macs though!) And i need to have those softwares in case my Mac (another dinosaur) decide to give me problems... And also for my wive's AutoCad.Do you see a considerable difference in performance? Might try it coz i'm thinking of upgrading the HD to 320GB, since the RAM's been max'd to 2GB now... :mrgreen:

Yeah, my RAM is maxed out to 2GB as well. Size of HD doesn't increase performance. The key is having a clean boot paritition - ie dual boot and make sure you have nothing else installed in the DAW partition except DAW software. The performance increases drastically.
Anyway, since my Acer is really dying, I've upgraded to a real desktop instead of a desktop replacement. Now on Quad Core and moving into 64 bit.

Based on your recommendation and lots of readings from the worldwideweb and Computer Music Mag issue dec 2003 (yeah, its THAT old!), i decided to dual boot my Wins machine.
I partitioned an 160Gb hdisk externally via a USB/FW case. Then did a clone of my OS into "both" partitions. Swap the external hdisk with the one in the machine. Reboot each individually and delete unnecessary files in each partition. In the case of the DAW partition, all other apps and bloatware. While in the Main partition, the DAW apps/files. Now i have a lean separate bootable partition for my DAW/recording needs!
Took me 5hrs+ to do all that coz i'm a Wins idiot!
But have not tried recording anything and experience the results yet... :mrgreen:
