Thomas, a student from Saint Andrew's Secondary School, was appalled that his school forced secondary three students to wear shorts to school this year. But his post on Stomp has also attracted detractors.

Thomas said that they expected to switch from wearing shorts to long pants when they start secondary three, and so had already bought long pants from the school bookshop.

In an email to Stomp last week, he complained that the rule was unreasonable as many of them could not fit into their old shorts anymore:

"Since the Secondary 2 students in 2009 are seen to be naughty and not mature enough, they are being forced to wear shorts even when they are in Secondary 3 in 2010.

"What type of reasoning is this?

"I'm a student from St. Andrew's Secondary currently in Sec 3. I've already bought my pants from the book shop and now I'm told that I cannot wear long pants to school as a Sec 3 student like any other school in Singapore. I have to wear short pants.

"Many of my classmates are also furious because they can't fit into their school shorts anymore. Are they expecting us to buy a new pair of shorts again because we can't fit into the current ones anymore?

"Then when they changed back the rule, what do we do? Throw away the new pair of shorts? And not all of us can afford to do so too."

wow... wat are parents feeding children this days... less than 3mths they cant fit the shorts they used to wear... or isit during thier sec 2 period they wore super tite shorts(smaller then swimming trunks) for the whole year?

ya. seriously thats like some bullshit excuse

Nahz, most boys tend to start shooting up and growing like crazy during that period. Needless to say, the long december break would have resulted in many of them outgrowing school shorts

He's got a valid point, I must add. You can't just change the school rules on a whim like this and expect everyone to follow, especially uniform rules. It costs extra money to purchase a few new pairs of shorts, and when they reverse the rules back, what are they going to do with the old shorts?
And come on, these were 13-turning-14 boys last year. How mature can you expect them to be? They can only reach a certain level of maturity, and boys mature later then girls. You can't expect them to be up to the same standards as you want your Sec 4s to be. Give them a break - they'll mature this year for the better, but not because of this fickle rule!

seriously. stomp is a being bitchy as it is. but this is one of the RETARDEST NEWS EVER. WE SHOULD START A PETITION TO MOE! THIS IS STUPID. HOW TO COVER LEG HAIR LIKE THAT?! SHY SHY YOU KNOW!

my sch , some of my fren sec 4 have to wear shorts bcos of altered pants . haha
i was told to use too but i just wear my unaltered pants . but thats only for like a week only . .

after 1 week they can wear their long pants back but must not be the same altered pants ah.

guess it sucks to show off their hairy legs . hahahaha

as for as i can rmbr, the sec 3 boys in hwa chong and acsi have been wearing shorts for years now. and i dont see them making a big fuss out of it.

stomp isn't citizen journalism. it's pretty much a place for people to rant and air their dirty laundry

I'm in catholic high. I've been wearing my SEC 1 PANTS for 4 YEARS NOW (well actually 3 years and a month) so don't complain. Seriously. The people in my school think it looks ridiculous, but it's been there for over 70 years, and we don't diss about it.

yea true... for hwachong its tradition. but now its punishment. i mean my school too have a punishment where if you tapered your long pants= wear shorts for a week? i mean its no big deal anyway. i like shorts imo.

Singapore weather is pretty warm. Make use of the shorts. Sometimes I see students ran the field with long pants. That's weirder then wearing shorts in Singapore.

Off topic, some schools here banned girls from wearing black inner wear and force them to take it off and go braless. That's more weird. And somewhere in our neighbouring country, theres this campaign on girls to go underwear-less on valentine's day to show true love for their boyfriends/partners. That's weird.

I guess, during my time in secondary school, I would feel awkward in shorts as there's this feeling like, you are in sec 3, retainees etc. and looking forward to wear long pants, that I would laugh at Lower Secs for still in shorts. Its about the feeling ah.

If everyone in the school are forced to wear shorts, you won't have that feel. Adapt to it. LOL. Like how Soft changed its layout, and people are complaining. Now we are totally adapted to the new layout.

Now , I feel good wearing shorts. Cooling.~

Then shouldn't your short pants be super short now?

More chance for ball sack exposure..

Yeeks!

I think the school has the responsibility to made know her intention before the school end that year term. If the school annouced for sudden changes after the new school year has begun, then it's not fair for the students and parents.
As for punishments, I think it's inappropriate to alter the uniform as it defeats the purpose of being in uniform. Such punishments are not good for the mental health of the students as well.

Like someone said, it would have been better for those notorious ones but if I were given a choice, I would have choose to wear shorts. So what about the hairy legs? Be a man and be proud of it! Don't like then go and shave and be a sissy lah! If you complain and make a fuss about not wanting to show your hairy legs or you paiseh or what, then I assume you dont own ANY shorts at all? You take shower wear long pants meh? Go swimming wear swimming suit meh? Dont bedek ok?

The sch should do reimbursement for those students anyway. Plus, changing from pants to shorts does not really change the behaviour of the students what.

Singapore so hot and humid...I want to wear shorts/bermudas to work also cannot. So why are these pansy schoolboys bitching about? They should be grateful.
