i;'ve heard the term "scooped" so many times, but i dont know what it means exactly, or what does it refer to. someone please enlighten me!!

i always hear ppl saying they increase their mids, or bass or whatever to get a fat sound, etc etc.
i never really understood, and i want to understand, can anyone tell me more about them? or maybe gimme a webby to read?

Thanks all :P

well, u should try it, just turn up the mids and bass, to full, there is a very discern-able difference, whereby the tone becomes that much more "hiong", so to speak. it allows u to do more of the metal/rock sort of "chugging", stuff like that. when u turn down the mids and bass, the sound might be a little thin, since its comprised mostly of treble, in that case.

p.s. maybe u could condense the two questions into a single thread next time? things could get a little messy

then what about some pedals that have negative values for certain adjustments?

People pls helps thanks and sorry for askiung silly questions!

yeah, I too heard a lot of that word on ice cream stalls.

yeah, the concept is pretty similar to scooping from an ice cream tub.

Scoop means taking out lah.

But people use it in an EQ sense, and most of the time ppl try to scoop out the middle frequecies using and EQ pedal so get a more heavy modern/metal sound. So for those who scoop until cannot scoop already, they end up boosting the bass and the trebles to achieve the same result.

Though when playing around with EQ its always best to CUT freqs than to add

We should have a tone discussion forum. Any tips to get a classic, slightly fuzzy kinda distortion vs the crisp, sharp ones you get in modern pedals?

i suppose those can be used to cut even more. i.e. u have a nice eq setting on ur amp, and ur current pedals all sound good. then u get maybe any pedal to do a gain boost, hoping to drive the amp further. however, each pedal, while boosting, will colour the tone somehow, so the negative values, maybe could be used to remove as much of that colour as possible, without touching ur amp's eq settings? just my opinion on their functions, hope some pro can clarify?

creeping death, how about using a fuzz pedal + a distortion pedal, both on at the same time with moderate drive/gain settings?

actually, neg value mean cut, positive means boost lor.

Usually for lead tones ppl boosts mids. eg of an application.

check out www.amptone.com though a lil heavy, but just spend sometime browsing around you'll find a wealth of knowlegde waiting to be discovered.

Well you can treat Bass, Mid and Treble like eating a dish ... when you eat a bowl of noodles blindfolded ... you can tell if there is a fishball or minced meat whether it's too much salt or too blend.

Try setting all the tone on your amp to the minimum ... then increase the Bass, Mid and Treble individually .... then use your ears to "taste" to discern whether the tone is too "Salty", "Sour" or "Sweet" .... then try different combis ... like Low Bass, half Mid, HIgh Tre ... or HIgh Bass, Half Mid, Low Tre ... Low bass, HIgh Mid, Low tre ... or HIgh Bass, Low MId, High Tre .... personally .. i like the first combi ... :)

Once you get familiar with the frequencies ... you will be able to prepare your very own Gourmet ... finger licking good. :)

If you are good with sound .... you can even experiment with equalizers. Bass, Mid, Tre is really just a simple 3 band EQ. Some EQ comes with Low Bass, High Bass, Low Mid, High Mid, Low Treble, HIgh Treble (6 band).

More complicated EQ can come with 16 or 32 band EQ .... where you dun name them bass or treble but in frequencies ... like 5khz or 15khz. It's really fun to play with sound .... just play around. :)

Cheryl is one curious guitarist ... :) But i like it ... i mean i like quesions. :)

Scooped palm muting? Did you read it from a guitar magazine? Or is it a real technical term from instructional materials?

I think it's just a way to describe difficulty to achieve the palm muting process? It sounds more like an english expression than an actual musical term. :)

Cheryl dun know if there is such a term...but my advise ..try to listen to the diff between scoop(cut) or boosted mid...

Once u recognise the tone its easier...there are offcourse other ways to boost the mid...eg like a demeter mid boost or pedal oriented..

some ppl scoop the mid on the amp but his guitar pickup has lots of mid..so its like balancing trick..

For me i boost using a GE7 Eq pedal..

if if need more info just ask...sure someone will reply..
Btw any particular tone that ur after?Im just curios...u into metal?

Perhaps she is referring to the sound of palm muted riffs with a scooped mid tone? You'll get a very thrashy tone, more towards metallica and pantera,(correct me if i'm wrong) while if you used a boosted mid tone for palm muted riffs u'll get more of an early slayer sound.
