RS Singapore (anyone ordered from them before?) ORDER RECEIVED!

Anyone done online orders from them before?
Was thinking of buying some ge trannies and some other components for a couple of my own pedal builds.

Any input is welcomed. Thanks

RS components usually deal with companies ordering in bulk, the price also aint too cheap if you just order few of each.

For effect purposes, it will be better of, to order from small bear electronic, mouser. Diy effect people get their stuff from there quite often it seem. Small bear guy himself do pedals too, so kinda more tuned to the effect side talk also.

what sorta ge tranny/stuff you looking to get, if you dont mind me asking.

How i wish i could order from mouser, small bear and the like. The thing is, i'm just a student and hence do not own a credit card.

Also, I noticed the RS prices quoted are slightly cheaper than the prices quoted in the shops in sim lim tower. eg. one shop there quote me an lm833 opamp for $2, the RS price is just $1.30+.

i'm looking for the AC128. I need two of them. Looking to build a FF clone. Pretty confident about this whole pedal building thing after my successfully building my maiden pedal. =)

i've bought industrial grade limit switches from em. for my final year project.

hey sleepykitty..why not go down to RS Components? juz take a bus from Boon Lay..but i gotta warn you..its a looong ride..

besides..u buy it from there..u might get a discount..

not sure if u can juz buy one..:D

Would you need to like bias them? Or like... get a certain grade or something? Something to do with gain and what not...

Unless what I've been reading about is marketing hoo-haa... Techies, fall in!

How many did you buy?
I'm planning to order the parts online since the place is all the way in TUAS.
I'm just wondering how long will the processing of the online order take. (Would have called them to ask, but their help hotline is only from monday to friday, office hours)

i bought 1 only..and i registered the order under my co-supervisor's name..since he has an account there cos he bought stuff from there once..

and mine was for my FYP..

i tink if u go down personally its better...but i tink u shud inquire if they will sell the components in small quantities..

errr. just asking, what is RS singapore
btw where do u guys recommend to get parts for pedal projects and stuff, like at super low prices..

hey sleepy, if you wanna just do for fun project, imho, you can just get the components from simlim tower. Although it might be a bit more expensive as in the lm833 you ask, but if you dont mind swapping those op amp, you can use other type, tl072 being the most common, easily found and cheaper, $0.80 to $1.00 for a piece. The price difference if you buy more, 10 piece and above from SL tower, it can be cheaper by few cent of sorts.

Although there might be a different in the sound, you can interchange various type(shud not affect the over functionality of the circuit). So far i have gotten ne5532/5534, jrc4558, tl061/62/71/72/81/82, lm833 and some others from simlim to incterchange in the circuit i was doing for fun, it will work, althought the sound will vary by a bit here and there

for the ac tranny, if you wanna for FF, theres lotsa variation of the circuit schem around using silicon transistor for the built, those shud work also and easier to get parts from sim lim

so far i managed to get round 30 piece of ac 188 tranny from SL tower, kinda suprised to find it hidden in some corners round there. I wanted to do some fuzz pedal with those also. But i suspect it shud be quite leaky.

anyway, if you wanna get those germanium transisotr for built, best if the seller already match the gain or test for leakage. If not the article from rg keen(technology of fuzz face) and small bear has article on testing those germanium transitor for leakage and hfe which might be useful

RS singapore, aka RS components. Google for the site to see what it does

pedal project at super low price, it doesnt exist. Everything cost something, unless you buy in bulk of 100 to thousand, maybe can get cheap. Otherwise, no cheap, everything else is normal

plastic enclosure, sheet metal enclosure, resistors, caps, pots, x wing type dpdt, leds, transistors, opamp, switches, perfboard etc. can get from simlim tower, but you need to walk round and round to find what you need. Theres lotsa thing hidden in there. Seek and you shall find.

for cast iron enclosure and 3pdt, can check with mr misse.

Ahhh.... does it matter for silicon?

heh, i guess so. Some of the people did their design over silicon or things that can be found easily over those germanium

for the sound, iam not too sure how close it is to the original. Some of them came up with way to bundle silicon transistors to get hfe value close to germanium tranny for their fuzz circuit. Those are quite interesting..

Hmmm... that does sound interesting. Mimicking a germ fuzz thru the use of silicon trannies?

Btw, Threadstarter, why don't you sign up with some of the DIY-ers forums? I'm sure you'd be able to get more know-how there.

not too sure of how close the sound can get thou. Coz it seem like what they did was just trying to reduce the gain level of modern moderate/high gain tranny to be closer to the older tranny and sub it.

There shud be other factors to consider in the circuit i guess, to get the final sound, the gain is just one part of picture.

No idea. I'm but the dude who "uses his ears"... so I might end up buying a LDO only to have the diy community of technies laugh their asses off...

But.

Truely. Isn't this what FUZZ is all about? The magical mix and match? The lure of mojo? The practice of cork sniffing?!

its about marketing!

You a builder, you infiltrate forum with big money to spend. Get one to buy your stuff, if your stuff is just decent in the first place and contain normal, but hype up by buyers over internet forums components, you are right on the first step. After that, watch how the people who buy your stuff, do your marketing for you

heh, but then, these also diy assholes as well as booteek lickers everywhere. Its fun to see both side of forums

Alrite, I'll try using alternative components in my circuits. I'm just not sure of what component can be substituted for what component.

BTW, I just did an online order with RS Singapore yesterday. The total value was $12.10 inc gst (two ge trannys and a 5 diodes) Still waiting for a reply from them. I hope my order passes thru. Will update when they do.

I got a call from RS Singapore while on the way to school this morning. The guy said he was just 5 mins from my house and he was coming to deliver my order (2 Ge trannys and 5 2n3904s). Luckily my sis was at home to collect and pay him.

Kudos to RS Singapore!

RS have Germanium transistors? thats a first. I only know they may have germanium diodes 1N34A. hmmmmmm.... its a real wonder if anyone other than liquidators, spares and guitar fx orientated parts dealer that will bother to deal with germanium transistors.
