right hand little finger

guess it's just me... wrong technique i suppose. hmm come to think of that, i realise i do not exert SO much force to the extent of feeling tired but i actually feel a slight sting, like a slightly weighted pinky... anyway whatever the case is i really want to remove this (bad) habit.

Dude, don't remove anchoring. It does NOT make sense to NOT anchor.

Think about it.

Playing guitar is about being accurate (never understood messy playing as "feel") and if you don't anchor, how would you ensure accuracy?

You don't need to use your pinky. You can use your palm.
Listen to Paul Gilbert, most of the time, when he plays the lower strings, its all palm muted.

i'm really confused by this statement 8O . you mean it's ESSENTIAL to anchor? after reading so much about anchoring is badd...

thanks yea i watched him. so basically there must be some sort of support, palm or wrist right?
i practise pull me under and u noe the phrase where it goes the bottom string goes 0-0-2-0-3-0-0-6-0-5-0-0-3-0---- and so on and so on? there's one part where it MUST be clean so yea after watching paul gilbert, i suppose i lean my palm on the bridge?

Well, plop, there is no hard and fast rule in how you should position your hand or whether you should anchor or not.

Example, look at Marty Friedman, the only superstar guitarist with a picking technique NO teacher would advise their students to follow.

The ONLY rule is:
If it hurts, aches, then something is wrong.

You see, you read, "anchoring is bad because it causes tension". Correct?

Nope.

It should be, "Improper anchoring is bad because it causes tension".

Every guitarist out there uses anchoring to a certain extent. Either palming the bridge. The little finger. Some finger. Thumb. Anything. You need to get your picking hand in position before you start playing. In a live setting, its impractical, almost impossibe to adopt a floating approach.

Finally, everyone does it differently, like holding a pick. Some use 1 thumb, 1 finger.. some 1 thumb, 2 fingers. You gotta find your own ground.

Relax, sit back, and figure it out.

shredcow, u shld go and compile ur tips and tricks and put it into a stickied diy with a search function.

I don't have that many, and there are people with better playing, better tips, better tricks out there.

Now, if only they would come out and share... :D

Yeah, i could play better only if my guitar was floating like Ace Frehley's....after which bursting in flames at the end of a song.

Note: Still anchoring but guitar floating

hi! sorry my eoys ended today and today was my very very bad maths so had to study for ytd.. and yes it was very baddd boo hoo

anyway thanks! ur first quote probably cleared most of my doubts,. a big thank u. today while practising i've been fully aware of my anchoring habits but in the end i still anchor with my pinky even if i try very hard to not to bother about my pinky too much. haha so i guess this is how i should anchor :) for some slower runs i try to let my pinky take a break, coz i beleive there's still hidden tension no matter what, even if there is no obvious pain etc. so i try to let it float for slower runs.. haha

and out of curiousity ^ what is the movie/show/(what is it?) of ur picture, gsonique?

A big thank u to everyone who helped out! especially Shredcow!

hey plop (: maths is bad huh? I absolutely hate maths too,I need a tutor!
Ok..back to main topic. When I first started learning I used anchoring cause I find that using my pinky can help me have better support. But slowly I tried out different methods and for me not using anchoring allows me to pick faster.

yeah..so just sharing what i feel (:

thank u for ur opinion! personally i feel so too but before i get into speed i better get into ACCURACY haha like what shredcow said so i think i stick to anchoring for a while

but yes! i think when i eventually reach that stage where speed is required i will play without anchoring, like how petrucci does it.

thanks =)

the first time i play guitar i anchor with my pinky , around amonths with pinky for anchoring i changed to 2 finger anchoring pinky and the 4th one ... until i see joe satriani not anchoring ... i see very cool then follow ... without realising now .. i dun anchor anymore ... and i realised that i do play freely ... and much more comfortable with it ... hahaha ... not some tips to be given ... juz some experience that i had gone through

I, too, don't think that there is any wrong in anchoring.

I guess everyone has their own way of playing that they're comfortable with. 8)

Like for me... i anchor with my pinky when i need to do string skipping.. just for more accuracy.

anchor with my palm on the bridge when i do fast runs...

and don't anchor when i need to pick the strings harder and more aggressive.. for power.

yeaps... but that's just how I play.

There's no right and wrong really. You'll find your style soon enough. :D
