'Reserved seats' in the mrt

wondering if anyone has noticed the sign which says
'Reserved seats' and pictures of those who might need it.

what do you all feel about it?
honestly i think if effing retarded. why make it seem as if the seats are actually reserved?
i see less people taking those seats, EVEN if there's no one who seems to need it.
maybe they feel bad about taking a 'reserved seat'?
to me, it feels like there's a wastage of resources. i see some rather tired people on trains not taking these seats...

more should be emphasized on teaching people on civic mindedness. how can we as a society then progress if we do not educate the people on what should be done - in this case, giving up seats to those who really need it.

reserved seats just a term which is used by them, in the public transport of different countries, theres usually some thing similar to our reserved seats, but with different names.

hehe, actually whats the issue on hand ah?

1) Mrt need to educate more people on giving those seats to those in need?

2) People need to have more logic reasoning and initiative to seat down as and when they like and giving up seats to those more in need, when necessary?

3) Public transport company should do more to promote being civic minded?

4) Waste of time to teach people on something which should have been taught and knew since young?

lols.... this thread...
why? does the reserved seats really do bother u?

I mean u can sit there by all means but when u see an old person who has trouble standing, a disabled person, a pregnant woman or someone who really needs it then just give the sit up lah...

maybe its retarded when u see people "avoiding" those seats, BUT if u look on that matter optimistically, it's probably some act of kindness or courtesy, cos its better if someone offer the seat than someone asking for it cos due to the increasing numbers of foreign workers (im not being biased or criticizing ) here and our increasing population, i think everyone is dieing for comfort in a damned crowded train

I think it's kinda redundant because some people are still not giving up their seats. Unlike the Austrailians/Japanese. The Aussies have signs that say "Children paying the 50 cent fare should give up their seats to adults" and majority of the Japanese are just courteous by nature.

It's quite sad that we Singaporeans have to be reminded by the LTA to giv eup our seats to the needy. Shouldn't it be something that should already be in our heads?

I try to avoid taking the seats in trains because I know there will always be someone who needs that seat more than me. Besides, standing doesn't kill you that much. Unless of course, the train isn't packed at the time. Only then will I get myself seated

wait what is your point?
first you talk about reserved seats and how retarded they are.
then your final question is about how we should teach people on how to give seats up to people who need it.

if you're complaining about the concept of reserved seats that's pretty sad.

I think those 'Reserved seats' make no difference at all. I don't call them retarded, I think they were put there with good intentions, but it doesn't work.

I see people giving up their seats to the elderly, in fact that is a common sight and I thank God for that. Honestly. But from what I see, none of those helpful souls were sitting in the 'Reserved seats'. They were sitting in the normal seats. The young buggers in the 'Reserved seats' are always sleeping and they're certainly not the ones who care about people needing the seat more than they do.

His point is quite simple actually. And yes, the concept of reserved seats IS pretty sad. People should offer to give up their seats to those who need it more regardless of whether the seat they're on is labelled "reserved" or not.

It's because this does not happen here, that's why the idea of reserved seats was conceived in the first place. He also pointed out how retarded it is, because those seats are left empty by commuters even in the absence of "people who need it more".

I think, as a responsible civic minded people, we should actually try to get a seat (any seat) when there are nobody around to "reserve" the seat for somebody who needs it more. Like that, we can give it up to the elderly / pregnant / etc if they happen to get into the train at later stops.

This, rather than leaving it empty, possibly letting an inconsiderate (we won't know) person getting the seat at the next stop, and not giving it up when he/she should to people who needs 'em more. What do you think?

hey man. i'm sorry if you're drawing blanks from reading my posts.
i'm just awfully disappointed how singapore has to resort to such measures. why can't people be educated?
are we that ignorant that such laws must be enforced on us? though some might say that the 'reserve' isn't actually a reservation in that sense but is there really a need for this?

imo, its really different from car parks. where there's reserved carparks for the disabled.
why? because once your car is parked then and you're away, you cant give up your spot unlike in seat in the mrt.
the fact that there has been changes and if i recall, it used to be please give up your seats to those who need it more. at least something along those lines, now its 'reserved'. don't you feel its kinda enforced?

its like the government has given up hope on us. i doubt we singaporeans are that irresponsible and ignorant that we cannot be educated.

Bro, i think most of us were educated enough to give up our seat should we see a senior standing around. HOWEVER unfortunately, not many can convert what they learn and to practice. And not everyone think, do and practise what you're doing. It's sad but that's how it is. Unless you want to step up the plate and try to drill that to everyone, something that have been done before, and still going on now.

DONT WORRY LADS! in due time, with the ageing population we're in, it will be put to good use. except the fact that even seniors have to give up their seats to even senior-looking seniors!

The people who don't take up the seat probably know that they'll have to give it up sooner or later, so why bother. I'm one of those people. I will seat on those seats if the train has a few other empty seats but if those are the only ones available and it's going to be a long ride you know for sure a parent with a kid or an old person is going to come on sooner or later.

I don't usually sit on the Mrt seats cause I know theres others who needs it more than me. And you can feel the aircon more if you know where to stand.

Take for example the escalator, Im so glad to see people standing on the left and let the people on the right to walk. Really good.

*laughs* you don't normally sit because your mrt station always flooded with people sia. i go back from your area (boon lay) after reservist confirm must stand all the way till lavender or kallang. super brain dead lehz.

lol! +1 to that! I stand directly under the air con nowadays cause of the splendid weather

Oh yes, this trend is really picking up now. Just a few years ago i remembered people didn't really bother when the stickers had just been stuck on the escalators.

For the first time ever, alot of people actually agreeing with me. Maybe cause paramore finally came by singapore.. HAHA.

I tend to do this in the MRT and sometimes on the bus. However, it got me thinking... am I doing this because I genuinely care about those who really need the seats or am I just being selfish in the sense that I don't want to give up my seat later. Rather not have one at all in case I have to give it up later.

But curiously i wonder if the reserved seats are there so those needy folk don't have to walk too far when getting on and off (near the doors).
