Samick acoustics at Davis guitar. They sound superb for the price. Should be below $200 though some exceed.

I've tried the samicks.
I'd... recommend against the samicks. Even one with a solid top - which i thought was too thick.
Sounds rather dead actually.
I've heard branded acoustics (your takamines, martins, etc) that sounded sub par... I've heard Made in China stuff sound stellar. Of course, the branded stuff, (usually) more likely has more good apples than dud ones.
My point?
Go try them all. Spend an afternoon in penni or somewhere. Try and try and try. State budget, ask if can try. Try a unit with the freshest strings on it. Play the same riffs/licks all over the fretboard.
Now - if you can, get a point of reference. Go grab some expensiver guitars and play them. Get a sound you like.
Then see if the cheaper ranges - maybe a gem shows up.

If it's for a friend's birthday, isit meant to be a surprise? Cos if it is not, why not ask your friend along and let him hear, compare and decide what He likes.
Otherwise, for beginners, it's almost pointless to scout around and audition, especially if it's not You are the one who's gonna be playing it. So I guess take a look at your budget and find something that you deem as fitting the value.

In that case, forget about classical guitars. Go for acoustic steel-string. Classicals are only nice when they're used for what they're made for (Spanish flamenco, etc). Strumming, etc, they sound really terrible.

every guitar exist for a reason, just because it sounded bad to us in one area, doesnt mean its bad when used by another person in a different context, but played in the same way..
in 2 of local gigs which i caught, a band that incoporate classical guitar in their songs, it actually make me seat up and listen. As iam so used to hearing them playing electric geetar and rocking out, the change in certain part of the songs arrangement, played thru classical geetar was beautifully executed.
and no, they dont play classical nor flamenco.
