Need a compressor under $200. Main criteria is no/minimum change of tone when connected to the board. Other considerations, Simple to use. Main usage is to maintain constant vol for palm mutes, hammer ons etc.

Alternatively u can also try to find a 2nd hand legendary keeley comp keke, but leecs is spot on with his recommendations especially goose's citrus.

spot on again leecs, well perhaps the dyna comp can work for shioks as well.....although i think the keeley comp still sound much better imo.

If you not looking for the squishy squishy compressor sound, look for an optical compressor. My favorites are Goose's Citrus followed by the Aphex Punch Factory. They both sound and feel extremely similar actually, I've tried them side by side.

I personally like EH Soul Preacher but I don't know whats going on in there and what is it based on or if it is a reissue of their old Soul Preacher.

i think the analogman comp would suit you, based on the ross comp.
Its a very subtle comp that you would leave on all the time, just feels like smthing is missing when you off it but you can pin point exactly what.

soul preacher -> an Orange Squeezer with a few improvements. It has a bipolar transistor input stage, a gain stage used to drive a rectifier/envelope-follower circuit, and an FET used to attenuate what goes between the input stage and gain-stage. don't bother ...
Btw its the same one used in the sustain section of a Deluxe Big Muff, kinda squishy... some people just love that rubber band feel:D
A complex build = greater potential for noise in signal path.imo...
The ealier version used a 4558 opamp.

nice one goose, but hor is the recent NANO series based on that circuit? I like the NANO one... and I LOVE that RABA-RABA GETAH....

sub u mentioned the mxr super comp as a worthy competitor to the barber

How does it compare? As its only 160+ and available everywhere?

Maxon CP101 optical comp. by far the most natural sounding comp i've ever played. very natural note release and it can hold its own against the Ross-style comps like the 2 and 4 knob keeley versions. It also retains a nice top end which i felt ross-style comps roll off too much, which darkens the tone. But well some like that kinda compression...not for me though.
