Randolf mods

ShredCow: Im just curious about the modelling ones , I was surprised as Randolf was impressed by them!

I havent run them through a line 6 yet, whats your take?

I have fender super 60 all tube amp, and a trace elliot twin stereo quad chorus (man leave it to those brits to come up with long names)

Radius, awesome-ness is in the eye of the beholder. :)

I played a gig thru a clean line6 head with 4x12 cab... hahaha... smoking. SMOKING. Then again, I haven't played thru a lot of amps so... whats smoking might just be smoked beef...

Which modelling amp would you recommend?

My first experience with modellling amps came about in the mid 90's when Roland first released the very cutting edge COSM technology in the form of the VG8 Guitar system. It was owned by a very prominent guitar and amp collector. Unconditionally (and almost indefinitely :) loaned to me I experimented whilst recording with this wonderful piece of guitar technology each night after my showband gigs and learned so much about the incredible range of tones and drive characters from almost every thought up combination of the choice of amp head, speaker cab, type and position of mic. What was also interesting about the VG8 was that it also allowed me to learn what different guitars with pickup combinations sounded like with the almost endless amp choices all within one unit. Needless to say I owned the Roland VG88 ver2 which came out later.

So what do I recommend? Well besides my obvious love and usage of Roland VG Systems I've used and have been very happy with Line6 Flextone III, Spider series, Behringers, Johnson, Zoom (devices) and Roland Cube 30 and 60 amps. I think the state of modern modelling technology has a reached a point where it is not necessarily better but rather more affordable so I do see it continuing to evolve and coexist with all the tube, solid state and hybrid amps in the future. Ayoooo! Decisions decisions! What shall we do? Hmmmm.... :)

It is my opinion that Vox is ahad of the game right now in terms of modelling for most players. :)

There is truth in what youre saying.. I kinda liked it myself.. But before I came to know of soft.com, I was a prominent member on ultimate-guitar, and there, every single guy was against the line6 flextones and spiders, dismissing it as utter crap!!

I have also noticed that we folks here are so pedal oriented, most of our drive is from pedals!! They are more of amp guys around there. Obviously, the drive of the modelling amp's isnt too good right? in terms of warmth and character?

Shreddy, the reason why you were blown away by the line6 amp is prolly cos of ur UB3r c00l p3d4lz

Do correct me if wrong.

The big difference between the modelling amps and the real glowing full tube amps is the fine detail of tonal and drive change when you roll down the guitar's volume knob. If you are a player who plays totally clean for the versesand then full shred for the chorus chances are pretty good that the modelling amps will suit you just fine.

I had a bad experience using a line 6 spider II amp head and cab. I shut down all the onboard efx, tried to run my pedalboard thru its clean channel. Sounded weak and sterile to me. The Marshall AVT100 blew the spider away, using the same pedalboard config.

The flextones sound better tho, that's for sure. I haven't heard the Vetta's!

Ken, that's quite strange for me the way you described it. Hehehe.
IMHO, I feel that the Spider series are like...how should put it? Ah, like "strategically scrippled" versions of the original theme. Probably aimed at thhe entry level market, they are probably manufactured at much lower costs. The Flextones are probably aimed at the mid market and the Vettas are at the high end. So in short Line6 wants to and probably could rule the world! :)

Give 'em another tryyou might just surprise yourself in the virtual world of amp simulators.

"Domo Arigatou Mistar Robartooo...Blip! Blip!" :)

Hopefully for the convenience of others who potentially if not will face drive pedals option anxiety my advice is that every serious player should try to at least experience and experiment with the following recommended stock analog pedals as a primer before you begin your own lifelong tone quest. :)

1. Overdrive (TS808, TS9 or SD1)
2. Distortion (DS1 or RAT)
3. Fuzz (Fuzzface and Big Muff)
4. Compressor (Dynacomp, CS3)

The wide range Mods and Boutiques are usually designed to zone in on specific areas of the classics for specific musical genre and sonic styles. Mods and Boutiques are in short mostly variations of the above listed classics. There are however a few very outstanding Boutique manufacturers like Zvex and Effector 13 that stand in class of their own.

:)
