Performers Info:

Zulkifle Mahmod, also known as GEDMB, is at the forefront of a generation of sound-media artists in Singapore's contemporary art development. An Associate Artist at the alternative art space The Substation, Zul's practice signals a more encompassing and expanded visual arts sensory experience.
Adopting a multi-disciplinary/multi-genre approach, that also include drawings, prints, sculptures and ready-mades, Zul has exhibited in Singapore, Thailand, Germany, Japan, Vietnam, Moscow, China, Malaysia, Taiwan, Norway and Finland. His "Stilt" series forms part of The Swissotel Stamford Singapore's permanent art collection. His notable initiatives include an industrial-sound inspired soundtrack in conjunction with an Antoni Tapies exhibition at the Singapore Art Museum and a series of 5 sound performances (False Securities, 2005) using binaural field recordings and digitally processed sounds.

Darren Ng, also known as SONICBRAT, is a believer in poetic imperfection and most of his music is performed and recorded on the fly without multi-tracking. Darren is a Singapore-based sound artist and music composer whose electro-acoustic sound-bites have established him as one of the most sought after sound designers and music composers/arrangers in the local theatre and art scene, and whose sound is one that critics have described as part primordial and part industrial. His works have been compared to Erik Satie and Martin Denny by international music reviewers from UK (WIRE: Ken Hollings) and Hong Kong (Hompy). Trained in classical piano, he has ventured into the digital realm of sampling, Musique Concrete, acousmatic music, digital and analogue synthesis, bringing a new sonic experience for his listeners. Sonicbrat has been earning him an audio signature in the underground music movement.
He is currently an Associate Sound Designer for The Finger Players Ltd.

Randolf Arriola, also known as THE EMBRYO is a professional singer, songwriter, guitarist, arranger, producer, sonic tweaker, live looper from Singapore. The Embryo is Randolf's creative vehicle for his personal original musical works. An admirer and follower of great works of cultural and social relevant human expression that transcend trends and eras. His creative motivation is to communicate with and move the audience. Born and raised in Singapore and musically self taught, he continues to create music that stirs the mind, heart and soul. Earlier in Oct 2007 Randolf was a featured performer at the Y2K7 International Live Looping Festival at Santa Cruz North California USA. His performance was greeted with a standing ovation by the fellow artists and attendees and was awarded the key to the city of Santa Cruz by Mayor Emily Reily. His trip was supported by the National Arts Council of Singapore. The Embryo is currently recording its long overdue and much anticipated collection of songs and sounds.

Librations of the Moon... gear gear gear

The gear head arm chair critics among us lurkin around with arms folded as usual have their pre show concerns n enquiries of what musical tools i'll strum, pick and slap bang stomp and tweak that make up my pallete of sounds for the intended performance. :)

Basically I'll be using an expanded solo live looping floor pedals setup. This coming show will include new sonic textures from the Roland Gr30 Guitar Synthesizer and the TC Helicon VoiceLive.

We'r planning to include for the 2nd part of the performance where we'll invite n encourage the audience to get on their feet come towards the stage threading around carefully to observe up close the individual performer's ongoings and possibly goof off when appropriate ya. :) Perhaps if time permits at the end of the evening the 3 of us Zul, Darren and myself will field a Q&A hopefully based around music, creativity and what not and then the gear... Hah. :)

So seeya!

ps. No, I won't entertain "Famous Jazz Guitar Song" requests!

About Sound Projection/Dispersion variables in Guitar Amps

Hi Folks, Seasons' greetings every'One. Ok it's been awhile since my last updates so tot I'd like to share some tots on an interesting subject which I believe all of us have experienced but few tackle it and fewer have any understanding wat it is. Yup, it's all the title above so here's my take on answering a recent query about it. Do feel free to put in your own constructive tots and solutions to this topic. Cheers!

Randolf

Hey Union,

very good question! ok i'll try....

what you'r experiencing is a common case of sound projection/dispersion phenomenon. the full technical explanation will lead you to pschoacoustics engineering dept. if you wish to pursue in dept that is. i'll try to explain it in a simple and practical way which hopefully will be of much use to help you n others understand and resolve this your way...along the way.

Sounds sound different depending on where it's heard from depending on many things including the source of the sound, the materials and dimension of sound box surrounding the sound source, the proximity of the entire sound source from the floor and the walls, the materials of the walls and floor and also the sound reflective nature of everything from the sound box design to the walls and floor and lastly the position of the ear or mic that's listening or recording the sound. i think from the above simplistic description of a typical listening environment you can quickly arrive at understanding that unless you place ur ears right in front of the sound source the human ear doesn't just hear sound from the "speaker" but also hears a combination of the direct sound from the speakers indirectly reflected off the floor and walls surround the speaker cabinet.

if your combo amp has an open back design it will also sound different from closed back designs as the sound dispersed from behind will also add to the "openess" airy, surround like but less tight bass compared to closed backs which have a more defined low end. You will also notice that smaller combo amps with smaller speakers tend to have a smaller accurate sound projection angle compared to larger amps.

ur combo amp with the same settings will sound very drastically different (in both good and not so good ways depending on wat suits you) if it were plugged into a 1x12, 2x12 and 4x12 open or closed back.

hope this has been helpful!

Season's greeting evry'One!

I'm using the clean channel of my amp with distortion pedals.
When I stand right in front the amp...no matter what setting I set for my pedals, the sound came out wif lots of 'treble' and rather thin sounding. But when I stand slightly away (maybe moving to the right of the speaker), I noticed that the sound gets a bit 'warmer' with less treble.
Is this normal about the uniformity of the speaker sound?
I've tried the bigger ones ...Lanel lv300 ....it sounds good when u stand at a certain position but not when u're in front of the amp.

Any of u facing the same problem? I've tried Carvin Legacy and Marshall...the sound are quite uniform.

Maybe Randolf can explain this ?
