Pickups: Tesla VS GFS

Hey gizer,

Everyone agrees that GFS pups are excellent value for money(a relative thing). What is debatable is whether they are absolutely as good as boutique pups.

There are two extremes opinions when it comes to issues like this.

One extreme will be the people who say that GFS are good because they want to be seen as being smart and getting excellent value for money ie. they want to think they got a great deal because they paid a dirt cheap price for boutique quality pups.

The other extreme will be people who paid for, or make boutique pups who dont want to admit that dirt cheap pups can sound as good.

In both extremes, its an ego thing.

You can only really know if there is a difference if you buy a GFS set and a boutique set and compare them recorded in the same guitar. And if there is a difference, will it be better, or just different?

One thing is for sure though, my set of GFSs were off spec (I was slightly pissed when I measured it) and wern't really cloth covered wires. Sound wise, excellent. Although I have a van zandt pup in another guitar, I cant really make an accurate comparison of which is better that way.

If you want to hear mine, send me a pm and we'll see if we can find a good time.

there's always a +/- when it comes to resistance and resistance can't tell you much about how a pickup will sound like. its just another marketing tool.

I believe the "premium" grade GFS single coils are decent.

I didn't really care for my Dream180.

thanks for all ur help so far...

i think i'll just have to try it myself to tell the different ya?

and different guitar gives different respond to the same set of pickups so my quest is still long i guess

btw, what other "must try" boutique pickup out there beside those mentioned so far?

At least i know the cost of pickup search... my wallet is not bottomless... :P

FYI, my pup swapping journey was all done on 1 guitar - so am I "qualified" to "judge" ?

1 set of ibanez pups - stock ones.

12 different dimarzio pickups.

1 set of HAS Sound pups to rule them all.

:D

what does FTW stand for? hahah

well.. ive tried many stock pickups... to Dimarzios , to Seymour Duncans , to kinmans , to suhrs, to Lindy fralins... but it doesn't mean my opinion is worth more then anyone else's.

GFS was my cheapest set of pickups. Ever.
the GFS is good value for money. its not a boutique pickup. part of the boutique thing is the price... how can something so cheap be a boutique pickup~?~?~? its not hand wound by a blind nun from France either.. so ..
It completely fails in the boutique department.

If you looking for cheap and good ... GFS is a good bet. imho.

that^ is factory made somewhere in ASIA by people who don't have a slightest idea what they are makin ....compared to some fella who decided to sit down a figure out how this one piece magnet coiled can be voiced right and then tested it till his wife and kids decided to leave home !!

Come on lah !!

A journey can be swift if you know the destination ....

Chanmin dude, in the world we all live in, it is said that All Opinions Are Equal.

Which would result in total anarchy. :D

That is, if you truely belive in that way of living.

That said...
Eh.
FTW = For The Win.

daniel bro... there is no equality. Our opinions are simply left here for others to read. the courteous way will be to phrase our opinions in a way where it seems unbiased and objective - this is how we share information. We dont jam it into people's throats.

like in a thread where the main idea was a
comparison between GFS and HAS pickups... eh. NO... it was Tesla pickups.

we dont go:
"I HAVE TRIED 12 DIFFERENT DIMARZIO PICKUPS
HAS SOUND PICKUPS RULE THEM ALL ..."

well if you tried GFS or TESLA then you should just give your input objectively. :)

jony, i've been curious about the retrotrons.

how does it compare to the regular humbuckers?

we dont go:
"I HAVE TRIED 12 DIFFERENT DIMARZIO PICKUPS
HAS SOUND PICKUPS RULE THEM ALL ...

Er. But... but but... that's correct. Really. The HAS Sound pups thrashed all of the Dimarzio pups. What's wrong with that? If you wish to read that in arrogant speak, by all means, do so.

Oh well, so much for that. Let's be nice, no mentioning about the rest of pups like what others have mentioned in this thread. Hahaha..

Hmm.

I have to second what mr Chanmin said about GFS's sound quality: definitely a vast improvement especially when compared to the stock pickups in my G-400 in terms of clarity and output.

Stock pups on the G400? Man, i tried that guitar before... just for kicks... and the pups were poor stuff. Very bad...

thanks for all ur comments :) !

btw, when u guys choose a set of pickup, do u guys choose the artist sound that u want to get or the sound u really want to get?

i mean, the definition of "nice tone" can be quite subjective ya?

do you think i can sound like James Hetfield if I use his set of EMGs?

do you think i can sound like Marty Friedman by putting in a Duncan JB?

naahhh.... I used to think I could but.. naaaahhh.....

Actually, Edder, Marty's tone, just use the stock Ibanez pup in his signature guitar --> nails it.

For some reason, marty seems to prefer, currently, based on his latest instrumental album, a loose-y, a little muddy, compressed, thick sound. The ibanez stock pup does that well.
