Currently using 2 picks often, an Ibanez 1.0mm which I absolutely love for the snap, bite and dynamics, but its on the thinner sounding side, plus its not very favourable for shred licks. 2nd pick is the Dunlop Big Stubby 2.0mm, has a nice glassy bite, but its fatter sounding, more compressed, not so nice for emotive playing.
1) i use finger for warm plucking
2) i use thin for strumming
3) i use medium for riffing and soloing
4) i use heavy for one finger drop d or power chord only
5) i use coin for added harmonics
6) i use instrument jack ala tom morello
7) i use plier/screwdriver for prepared guitar and when in sonic youth mood
8 ) i use vibrator when in jimmy page mood
9) i use fan to blow at the string when wanna be in drone mood
10) i use no hand with amp volume at 10, gain pedal, delay pedal all at maximum, feedback to max with variation in pitch by standing at different position!
Red Jazz IIIs for the rock and metal stuff.
Generic Medium picks for the strummy stuff.
Sometimes i use thin picks for strummy stuff too, depends on what my "lucky draw" in my pick box came up.
I feel tt the thinner the pick, the nicer the strumming sound though.
there is currently a sizeable thick-pick fans, not quite the situation say, a decade ago. i had been using thick picks back then, when i showed them to friends, they asked if i play bass instead... :smt069
I use Awe-in-one transparent jazz for solidstate amps. Somehow the effect doesn't translate to tube amps, so I just use normal plastic medium picks if I use tube amps.
Anyway strangely I find the normal medium generic picks allow me to work with dynamics most easily.
dunlop teardrop tortex .73mm for me. find that with any other picks i cant go as fast or sweep properly. den again ive been playing them for almost 3 years now i find it impossible to switch with any others. downside is they wear out pretty fast.
