Obama to receive Singapore plea

The leader of a Singapore opposition party has posted a video message asking for US President Obama's support.

Chee Soon Juan, secretary general of the Singapore Democratic Party, posted his "message to President Obama" on the video sharing website YouTube.

Mr Chee said he hopes that the US "will pay more attention to the human rights abuses of the Singapore government".

i really hope obama reacts accordingly with this message and since he'll be one of those who'll be attending the APEC that'll be held in singapore, let's hope this issue will be brought up.. :)

Chee Soon Juan screwed up. He chose to stay and fight the PAP. He deserves whatever he's going through now for not choosing to leave for a better place. He definitely had the qualifications to do well enough, such that his financial situation would permit him to leave.

Screwed up? Maybe in your view.
Sure he might have had a better life if he went abroad, but he obviously isn't someone who just cares about his own happiness. He is standing up for what he believes in at the cost of his own well-being, and that is something very respectable imo.

Sure sounded like he was complaining a little here and there, about how the PAP is treating him.

I believe in the power of democracy, if enough people like Dr. Chee leave, the PAP would start rethinking it's stance. Remember, when fighting an enemy far superior, you must pick a playing field to your advantage.

Or go down in flames, trying.

One thing I've always found a bit difficult to understand is a self-destructive streak in logical, accomplished and educated people. But it exists.

C'mon! Give Obama a break, he already had a hard time saying the oath. He still needs to help America. Why the hell does Dr Chee needs to post such a video at this time? Totally unnecessary at this point of time, really.

Anyone want to help make a SOFT plead to Obama? We need some musician visa (best if trip is sponsored too).

I respect Dr Chee and his efforts. He relentlessly tries to drive a message that PAP is not doing its best at the helm but somehow people just refuse to believe him. :/ I believe democracy works but in the situation that we have, it is convincing me that democracy can fail as badly as how communism had failed.

I doubt Obama will actually have time for this anyway. -.-

well.. perhaps his real motive isnt to get the attention of the US?

Perhaps his association with obama is just a "marketing strategy", a way to regain credibility among people.. now that everyone's on the Obama bandwagon, it does make perfect sense to capitalise on it.

I may not be a supporter CSJ but I agree with his points. However, I dont think his message can have an impact anywhere but Singapore.Even so,most of us already know of the happenings in Sg but we cant really do anything to change it.

Well, I know Obama didn't do that on purpose. :) The dude's cool, but to plead Obama to do something for Singapore when that poor dude just got into office for the first day? He ain't no superman!

Big deal. He got made bankrupt along with a whole slew of other things. As you said, he had a chance to leave, he chose not to. I doubt he regrets doing what he did.
And the PAP are happily rolling in their cash, why would they rethink anything?

And visa, it's called having passion. It's only called stupidity when someone doesn't succeed.

The problem is enough people are already leaving, but it doesn't change anything. As long as there are enough people here that are more or less satisfied and let themselves be willingly governed.

Pick any twenty of the local working/middle class people and ask if they would rather be somewhere else and you'd probably have enough for a football team. Leaving doesn't actually solve anything in the grand scheme of things, be it short-term or long-term. At least someone's staying to fight, and I hope his actions and sacrifices will someday be noticed and inspire more people to do the same.
