geez porko, speaking good English doesn't mean you're posh or showy. It just means you're proficient in the language. That's a really ignorant and generalised statement. So if I'm a guy and I speak Queen's English, does it mean I'm a b***h? Boy, you're going to get your ass whooped in England if you say that out loud. You won't find people saying "Hey chinky chinky, you wanna do some?" or "Hey Bruce, you want some? ". They'll go "Dude, get your ass back to school."

I'm not trying to be a dick or a prick, but that's life and you've got to realise it.

And, using bombastic words MIGHT even get you marked down. No kidding. If you use it wrongly, then its your fault. But if you use an uncommon word or phrase that the examiners are not familiar with, they are human, they might mark you wrong.

and your results wont be dogs bullocks no more..

L1r4 21 ... The your l1r5? We mug to get l1r5 20 and below. Can't speak for all. But I think most people want to get below 20. Yes 21 points may be satisfactory for u. Well all I have to say, different people got different perceptions about an issue and different people have different expectations for themselves. I think I olevels may not seem like a big issue to u, but to get into the good junior college it's l1r5 9 and below. Poly cut off points getting lower too. So of course everyone should aim for the best and not regret later:)
 
The thing is, in a mainly Singlish-speaking society, you speak how others speak around you. Eg. if all your friends are somewhat beng, then you'll be speaking a mixture of cantonese, hokkien and singlish. But if you're a working adult in a corporate world, you'll obviously speak proper english in day to day life.
And like fretness says, it's all about elitism.
And about the b***h part, it obviously doesnt apply to people in England, cos it is generally accepted that everyone speaks perfect Queen's English over there, even the skinheads.
In singapore however, most people expect each other to speak Singlish, so if you speak Queen's English, they will have this perception that "wah, this guy think he smarta** ahh, speak perfectly like those angmoh"
So yea, it's all about the people around you and who you are interacting with.

Although i dont agree that people should have that flawed perception that speaking Queen's English makes you stuck-up and all, it's still a reality that's happening around us.
 
actually, those people who speak perfect english can be classified into two categories... people who love to show off and think that their standard is so damn high, and can't even speak chinese/malay/tamil. and another category is those who are more proficient in english and don't show off, using english as a tool..

i think, in order to do well for english, one's script has to be fluent, and relatively free of spelling, grammatical, tense errors. once this is achieved, then you can put SOME bombastic yet appropriate words to display your vocabulary (please dont drop random english words that are inappropriate in that particular context).

in my opinion, a 'clean' script free of errors that lacks 'cheem words' is much more superior than one that is saturated with inappropriate vocab and mistakes.

yup, just my two cents worth for writing an english essay for o levels

oh, and a good way to improve is to look at the rubrics for scoring english essays by cambridge.

once you manage to put these requirements into your essay, say, including a combination of long and short sentences, ceteris paribus (all things remaining constant), your mark will most likely go up.

anyway, rule of thumb to improve is to give your examiner what THEY want from you, i.e. fulfilling what they require from the rubrics.
 
21 points isn't decent meh? most of my seniors end up getting about there, so it should be ok, i think. about that bit about getting less than 9, thats like dam pro sia. i dun think thats possible for the normal student. waste time stuying for what. not like you will get less than 20 points. lolololol. :roll:

i see. well okaye well done if u think 21 is great okaye! really:)
But getting less than 9 are ppl going into good Jcs. my school im below average. last few in fact. The average L1R5 is 10. and ppl in my school getting 14 they cry. but ill rejoice if i get 12-14. its all abt diff ppl having diff expectations of themselves aite!

wth? my school's standard is seriously dropping. i got 16 (l1r5) for my prelims and i am like 200+/400 for level position.... the average i think 17-18 for express students...

Yea the only subject they take is chinese for o levels. BEWARE MAN SERIOUSLY . IM Retaking. i have to face RGS, RI , higher mother tongue from sec 3. the HMT students ARE OMG. SERIOUSLY. they start their compos with a poem.
