new drummer

drummar-buah:im into punk and metal dude...any songs to practise not?
wow turbochicken u sound damn experienced...how long did u take to learn double pedals?

i'm not as experienced or skilful as drummers like ahpek or jimmy, but
i know what must be done right to stay on the journey to better drumming.

i don't do double pedals. never had to.

:)

LOL.

thing is, there's not much point talking about genres, since everything is mixed with everything.

if it's the major genres, i'll say...pop, rock, abit of latin, funk and chamber?

haha juz normal drum roll...

Hi Crossfire,

To be able to play drums, you should begin by learning your rudiments:

1) Single stroke roll
2) Double stroke roll
3) Flam
4) Buzz Roll
5) Paradidle

Forget about not begin able to play "normal drum roll" You have to recognise that whatever we play, it is based on the rudiments. Master them and apply them to your drumset playing.

Look for a fellow drummer or a teacher who can guide you in getting your basics right. Basics includes, posture, holding of sticks, the rudiments, music theory, drum notation.

Be patient, learn how to crawl, walk then run!

Cheers...

Let's take the Single Stroke Roll:

1) If you are playing a grove where you are doing straight sixteen on the hihat, that's the single stroke roll.

2) If you are rolling across the toms, in sixteenth notes, then you are playing the single stroke roll.

So, you will need to master the 5 basic rudiments before you can play comfortably.

The late great Elvin Jones was asked what will a beginner learn from his lessons, he said that for the 1st year, the young drummer will learn how to master the rudiments! This is to ensure that the young drummer has the proper technique to move to drumset playing.

Like they all say, RUDIMENTS ...PRATICE PRACTICE PRACTICE.

Tho it may not seems significant on the surface, you WILL definately see a difference in playing on the set when you have practice ur rudiments and when you did not.

Even now, iam still working hard on my Rudiments, juz like what frummer says...iam 30 years older than him but i dun even play half as well

I first started out by playing simple beat/rolls and cover songs. Self-taught so din realise the importance of basics, rudiments n stuff like that. Luckily met a lot of helpful musicians in the community who offers me lots of tips and advice!

Like what all the forumers have shared, practice ur rudiments n u will definately, guranteed see an improvement in your drum rolls/ or watever stuff u do on the set.

Take it from someone who`ve been there

yeah thx ppl..thx for the advice man...yeah im also self taught so did not care much bout rudiments...

hey fire. hmmm.. about metal arr.. see generally metal is mostly double pedaling speed and fast rolls. GENERALLY alrite? no offence to metal fans.
so.. something about speed. i suggest u learn your rolls first la. don't be disheartened that u are not able to play metal now. the only time u get disheartened is when after years of playing.. and u realise that u still can't execute ur rudiments well and proper. that's running into a brick wall for a drummer.
u can be like.. playing drums for 10 years and ur really good in ur genre say, metal or punk rock. but in my opinion. if u still can't do ur basic rudimental chops. your are not a good drummer. of course. you being a begginer, that's understandable.

alrite. bottom line.. do as much as u can with your rudiments first! haha!
long winded seh.. well.. i repeat. if u can't do fast rolls. start SLOW and ACCURATELY and follow the metronome. your muscles are still developing and your muscle memory is still trying to understand the concept of coordination.

there is onle ONE remedy to everything that u wanna learn. from sex to learning the computer to drums, trumpet.. or any other instrument or even learn sms really really fast!!
Answer? START SLOW DAMNIT!!! :D :D :D :D :D

Yeah, start slow. From what I can see from your previous posts, you're really rushing to play well. That's not the way man. 8)

yea it's good to have the on going drive.. the passion to really BECOME A PRO!! + speed demon + groove master.

yea. drive is one thing. patience is another
